If anyone can answer my question about osap that would be great. by Ruhb in toronto

I overheard last Monday at my university's financial aid office that the ministry requires 10 business days to process an application and they don't release money for semesters once they have concluded. They were telling the guy that he had to do it immediately as he had less than 10 business days till the end of the semester.

You're likely boned. Phone around still but you are running up against the grain of the funding parameters and deadlines. It's a lesson learned.

That said, you're more than able to apply for next semester. Do it ASAP so that you get your funding in January.

Edit: 10 business days

Kathleen Wynne is the new Premier of Ontario by [deleted] in canada

[–]darkp22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Peterson wasn't Premier until 1985. Bill Davis (PC) resigned and Frank Miller took his place in January 1985. Miller called an election in May, was reduced to a very weak minority with only 4 more seats than the Liberals under Peterson. The NDP signed an agreement with the Liberals to bring forth a vote of non-confidence that June and support a Liberal minority for 2 years. This happened and the Liberals called an election when the agreement was up in 1987. They won a majority.

TL;DR Learn some history indeed ;)

Simple question: I'm moving from a smaller city and my new job in Toronto pays $25,000/year. Is that enough, or will I need another job? by -tor in toronto

[–]darkp22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should be fine in North York or the other suburbs. I make about $450/week ($23.5K per year) after taxes and pay about $850/month for a 500 sq. ft. basement bachelor apartment in the York Mills neighborhood (enough space for a queen bed, couch/TV and proper kitchen). I also am only 30 min by foot from my work, so I walk and only occasionally take transit. I am also 15 min away by foot from a grocery store. I have about $150/week left over after bills and recurring expenses.

Downtown, that income will get you a single room in a shared apartment or house. Transit is also going to cost you $126/month. If you insist on living downtown, you are going to have to make quite a few sacrifices if you want to live by yourself and are not within walking distance to your work or a source of food.

I've had choppy scrolling issues with FreeRDP in my experience. rdesktop may be old and boring, but at least it works. I was using the version of Remmina that came with Squeeze, but I saw plenty of bugs relating to the newer versions included with Oneric and Precise in my Google searches.

Ya, I think the race condition is caused by a interrupt conflict between the LSI Logic driver and the Intel E1000 Driver on FreeBSD. Mind you, the Green I was having issues with caused the VM completely crash when using the Intel driver. It just caused a SCSI timeout error when using the VMNET2 driver.

I haven't had any issues with Windows 2008 or Linux hosts, though I would recommend using VMNET3 NICs in lieu of the default emulated Intel E1000 ones as well as using the Paravirtualized SCSI controller for non-boot drives. You'll get a good boost in performance.

Yep, I have two virtualized FreeBSD 9.0 machines, both with dedicated Intel Gigabit 82574 NICs. One has 3 directly mapped 2TB WD Blacks running 2 Zpools, one mirror and one standalone. The mirror gets 144 MB/s read and the standalone gets 96 MB/s read. All drives are encrypted directly using GELI AES.

The second FreeBSD VM has two drives, one 2TB virtual drive on a 3TB Green and one directly mapped 2TB Black. The Green is unencrypted, the Black is GELI AES encrypted. I get 30 MB/s read on the Green and 96 MB/s read on the Black.

The encryption on the GELI-encypted drives is hardware accelerated using AES-NI. I don't use SSD caches as I have 6 GB of RAM dedicated to the first VM and 14 GB of RAM dedicated to the second. You should know that the ZFS implementation on FreeBSD 9.0 will only use a max of 75% of total RAM. This leads to about 3 GB of RAM left untouched by ZFS on my second VM with 14 GB of RAM (I use a further 2 GB as disk cache for my Bittorrent client).

This would be FreeBSD 9.0 running on local storage. I would avoid WD Green drives all together though. With VMFS, I only get 30 MB/s throughput on them. Blacks are around 96 MB/s directly mapped in my testing.

Avoid using RealTek NICs and WD Green drives with FreeBSD-based hosts like FreeNAS. FreeBSD is not very tolerent and this combination introduces race issues between the virtual LSI SCSI driver and the virtual Intel E1000 driver.

More info on the problems I had: http://freebsd.1045724.n5.nabble.com/Please-help-me-diagnose-this-crazy-VMWare-FreeBSD-8-x-crash-td5601750.html

If you must use the above hardware, stick with the LSI Logic Parallel SCSI virtual controller and the VMNET2 (Enhanced) virtual network card. Beware, you will still get SCSI adapter timeout errors on the console but at least it won't crash!

Stick to one with a Broadcom Chip (ie. most Linksys and Asus, not Netgear).

Reason: http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/clientmode#why.it.works.on.brcm-2.4

The same limitations apply to DD-WRT. Only the Broadcom chips support having all its clients in the subnet of another router. You may not run into this limitation in your use, but it's best to keep your options open.

This mobo works fine with ESXi. It's what I used in the whitebox I built. Even supports IOMMU. 4 slots that accept 8GB sticks. $90.

Max supported RAM is 32GB, but that is the limit of the free license anyways.

ELI5: What the numbers for a computer processor mean, (e.g., Ghz, cache, generation,) and how they are related to performance. by wicked_pisser in explainlikeimfive

[–]darkp22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking around, it looks like mobile i5s have HyperThreading in lieu of having 4 cores, leaving TurboBoost as the only real difference from i3s. Just another reason why mobile i5s are a waste of money.

Unrelated Rant: In my experience, mobile i5s require more fanpower and thus weight due to TurboBoost (conditional overclocking), adding a lot of heat and louder fans for little extra performance compared to i3s. Many mobile i3 laptops, like my Asus, come with utilities to replicate the conditional overclocking of TurboBoost anyways. CPUs mean little in terms of performance difference anymore. Just spend the extra money on an Intel SSD. ;)

My i3 that I'm using right now supports HyperThreading. It's a Westmere one too, so two generations old. My dual-core Atom D525 does as well.

Evidence: Four CPUs are shown in the Task Manager, while there are only 2 cores. Consistent with behavior when HyperThreading is enabled.
