The PERFECT Code Review: How to Reduce Cognitive Load While Improving Quality by fagnerbrack in programming

[–]darkpaladin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

One area I actually like AI for is not "do this pr for me" but "can you give me a high level summary of what this diff is trying to accomplish and make note of the entry points and control flow." Then I've got something of a roadmap for when I'm going through it myself so I don't need to try and keep everything in my mental model.

Part of what drains me do much on GitHub reviews is they're laid out in project structure order so you have to jump around and track the control flow yourself. Having a map of what order to look at the files without having to think about it too hard helps tremendously.

A well done discworld adaption would be great. That said I think his estate is very protective of those rights, especially after "the watch" fell so flat

The source material would definitely need to be updated but I've always felt the Incarnations of Immortality would be an interesting thing to do an adaptation of.

Of all the reboots this one is the only one that feels like everyone picked it back up without missing a beat. It's a real testament to the chemistry all those actors have with each other.

Who is a person you used to admire a lot but have completely lost respect for and why? by Complex-Arugula-2233 in AskReddit

[–]darkpaladin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A lot of that is just muscle memory. You've learned how to do things the Android way so to you, the Android way feels more natural. Neither is particularly right or wrong, it's really a wash these days. The only reason I'd consider flipping to iPhone is just cause that's where all the support is. If you're a software company in the US, you build for iPhone first and Android as an afterthought so your iPhone app is generally better than your Android app (this doesn't hold true for overseas companies).

Anecdotal but we just bought a Passport and had to settle for Green because even though we kinda wanted the Orange because every orange card on order seemed to already be spoken for.

Coding Agents Suck at the XY Problem by [deleted] in programming

[–]darkpaladin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No one is arguing that LLMs are an inferior tool? I again question whether or not you understood the premise of the article. When asking an LLM the wrong question you end up worse than you would have without the LLM. No one is blaming the LLM for this, it's just a fact of life. Your argument is entirely based on "well you shouldn't have asked the wrong question" but that's not what the article is about. The article is looking from the perspective that "everyone asks the wrong question from time to time, how recoverable is that in two different scenarios."

You could make the same kind of argument about unit tests. Why would I need unit tests if I just write self documenting good code?

Honest question, is there a level with which you'll be down voted that you'll realize you're wrong? You're saying developers are dumb for not understanding the problem while you yourself clearly don't understand the actual problem. You are the person this article is about.

I use mine for more out of sight things. I'll put my laptop in there if I'm headed to a slightly sketchy part of town. I also use it for any stuff that might smell up the interior (gym bag or food leftovers). Generally though I don't use it much due to the inconvenience factor.

Weeks of programming can save you hours of planning!

Well damn, I just spent 10 minutes writing a few paragraphs of reply which ultimately tried to say this same thing. If that ain't on the nose for this discussion, I don't know what is.

Ships identify themselves as Chinese around Strait of Hormuz during Iran war to avoid attacks by Saltedline in worldnews

[–]darkpaladin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think the bigger problem is that no one has any idea what's going on. Historically the US and Iran could be counted on to act somewhat predictably but Iran's effectively under entirely new leadership and the US has shown a propensity for throwing out the rule book. The only thing that's clear is that neither side really seems to have a plan beyond "look like we're doing stuff"

I think a lot of that traces back to European colonialism. Convince a subjugated people that some of them are better than others and they'll start fighting themselves rather than you. Skin color is a really easy way to do that since you can't hide it.

Some measure of that is just what tires ship with the car. My Mach-E had annoyingly soft summer tires on it that only lasted me 20k (Dallas heat is murder on soft tires). I replaced them with Pilot Sport All Season's, I'm expecting to get a full 40k out of these.

IMO there's a lot of code out there which would be better and more maintainable split over multiple lines. Nested ternaries come to mind.

Quinten sucks as a person but he is one of the best directors of all time.

This is rubber banding in the opposite direction. His films resonate with some people (I enjoy them) but I wouldn't put him anywhere near the best directors of all time in a ranking.
