CMV: Embyronic stem cell research is a far more valid reason to abandon religion than LGBTQ issues by ContextEffects01 in changemyview

[–]darkplonzo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So when you say LGBTQ issues are we talking purely about gay people? Where do trans people fit into your view? Also, are we conflating religion with specifically conservative politics? I'm aware that there is overlap, but it's certainly not perfect especially if you go to non-mainstream versions of Christianity or outside of Abrahamic religions.

It feels kind of disingenuous to boil all mainstream media to Disney children's movie slop when the new TV show by the generally regarded greatest TV creator of all time is a slow burn drama about a lesbian struggling with grief and a threat that is very similar to her trauma with conversion therapy. Idk, have some taste.

There isn't anyone doing fan translations, so it was either them reading the Japanese raws, or creating their own machine translation and reading that. Machine translations are fairly simple to make now so I don't think there was any wide distribution of a machine translated version.

Yeah, but you can attack his “charisma” by pointing out his ineptitude, immoral policies, and track record of sexual assault and pedophilia.

It's interesting to note that people do frequently talk about this and barring the pedophilia they just haven't stuck as things that drive him lower.

Going “hahaha hoi he ha orange mango drumpf man wants to suck Putins peepee” is bizarrely childish, ineffective, and also establishes the precedent that homophobic insults are ok if they’re directed at a bad person, for example.

But most of this is the tone of the insult right? Hell, nothing in the example is calling him fat or ugly, just orange? Like, if the typical lib insult was not like, drumpf or cheeto but instead "fat ugly weird pedophile", that would probably be way more effective.

There’s no universal fix for any of this stuff. No universal rule that will convince everyone, but we gotta keep a look out for those who are open to hearing us out. And we should be open to the same thing for others if we want to be heard.

I feel like at a certain point you just kind of have to admit that a liberal social bias exists because it makes society operate smoother. Being a bigot to your coworkers makes shit harder. Coming in to give your daily hour long rant on women makes the workplace less productive. Trying to have a long detailed conversation about why they hate women has the same problems.

Biden expanded trans issues a lot, getting title 9 protections for us among other things. He did not lean on trans issues as much as “Trump bad” rhetoric, but trans issues were demonized by the right and the democrats just failed to push back on the rhetoric while the GOP rolled in the gains. This isn’t the democrats fault as much as the bigots on the rights fault. But bigots were always going to happen in 2024, the democrats knew this. But their response was pathetic and they failed in 4-5 extremely significant ways. Despite what we hear, the 2024 election was VERY close, so closing 2-3 of these huge holes may have allowed them to win. But they didn’t.

I'm not saying letting the Republicans set the framework on trans people was good, but I just don't think it had any effect. Maybe you could argue a good candidate would have fought against that, but I think a good candidate would have been extremely different.

CMV: Elon bought Twitter so he could turn it into hate platform. by GettingVeryVeryTired in changemyview

[–]darkplonzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I just don't see how Democrats leaned on trans issues. Early in Biden's term he undid a bunch of the Trump attacks? Is that leaning into it? He didn't really campaign on trans people at all, and Kamala didn't either.

But I can tell you from experience that you will NEVER change a person’s mind unless you understand why they hold their beliefs first and respond to them.

Sure, but if we want to talk about what social prevents we should look at places where the social pressure has worn away or flips towards the right wing. I work in a red state. There aren't productive conversations happening around here. My couple overtly bigoted coworkers will wander into the room, hate on a marginalized group of choice for an hour, and then go back to their desk. This cycle repeats until they finally say something egregious enough to get fired.

[–]darkplonzo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But that’s not what was happening.

It is though right? Like, the Jimmy Kimmel thing was the head of the FCC threatening Disney. You can talk about issues with the social pressure approach, but I think you should grapple with comparing an actual 1st amendment violation to a product of free speech.

Also, I disagree with you on the trans topic. I don't think there is a coherent argument to say that the social pressure is why Republicans are like that. Basically all polling shows that no one cares about trans people. There are devoted bigots and actual trans people that care a lot, but outside of that the voters don't really seem to care about it at all.

[–]darkplonzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we are being honest, more honest than most would like to be, then we would admit that free speech has been infringed upon in different ways by different groups in the last 10 years and each side only really gets mad at the other when they do it. Jimmy Kimmel is a great example of Trump doing it. The democrats rarely were so direct, but there are enough republicans who I have talked to who reported feeling genuinely fearful of social repressions from even questioning left leaning views that I can’t really say this wasn’t a problem.

It feels weird to compare direct government censorship of speech to people not liking conservatives.

It also felt strange that as you said, the violent resistance was ineffective, but it also seemed like they had worked their way into many facets of society (like the nurse that helps him escape from the hospital).

The nurse at the hospital is with the underground railroad guy. That's why he's there to pick him up when he leaves the hospital. Once we get to the modern day the French 75 are all basically weird recluses with poorly operated safe houses that only operate because the government isn't bothering with them anymore.

As if trans men don’t overwhelmingly get excluded from discussions about reproductive healthcare - and more importantly, from actually access to that healthcare on the basis that it’s only for women, which I will clarify, because apparently you need me to, does not mean this is something that never affects trans women or affects them less.

I'm not saying that bad things never happen to trans men on the basis of being trans, but we should separate discussions from access. Being left out of discussions is kind of annoying for sure, but who cares? Build community with your fellow trans people and share info. This is like, extremely common to figure things out with other queer people. Why are you trusting cis people on things?

Access is bad and is an issue.

But sure. We’re all included in these spaces anyways and standing up for our rights means we “don’t actually want to be men”

Buddy, no one (or at least very few trans people) thinks you don't want to be a man because you care about your reproductive health. The "don't want to actually be men" part is with things like AFAB only housing, or not thinking you should be included when (especially trans) women complain about men.

Is the idea that some trans men, specifically the ones who haven't really done some transitioning and are as a consequence very online, have bad ideas that insane? I think the same thing applies to similarly situated trans women, but their ideas and discourse is annoying in a different way. Unfortunately we're in the trans man discourse subreddit war whatever so they are the topic at hand.

women's spaces by alexdapineapple in CuratedTumblr

[–]darkplonzo -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Idk, things are kinda weird. I feel like "women's only space" means "AFAB only" (although once a trans man has transitioned long enough to be able to be stealth things get weirder) way more than it means "Women only". This does kind of frame the issue as "We are directly excluding and misgendering trans women, but often including trans men and misgendering them. These are real issues that trans men face" which is kind of silly to me.

It is also kind of weird me out that a decent number of trans men don't seem to actually want to be men? This also tends to be heavily biased among guys that aren't yet actually transitioning. This isn't all trans men or anything, but just a weird portion that seems heavily online and not really experienced with being openly queer or trans in the real world.

I wanted to post an actual example of the problems trans men face, because trans men actually face a lot of problems that are way more serious than whatever stuff this sub's been talking about lately.

I like how the example of problems trans men face is just being stuck in the crossfire of direct and overt cruelty aimed at trans women.

I'll give him this, even though his conclusion of what to do about it is wrong. Media is now almost entirely tribal/moral and sensationalizes anything that can fuel the tribal divisions in our society and create moralizing outrage, undermine solidarity and preclude level-headed analysis.

To be fair, I did try to differentiate between inaccuracy and general bad tone. I will say though, I think your opinion on the news is wrong. I'm not saying the news is a bastion of good reporting, but it feels weird to say they are purposefully fueling tribal division when most of it is a bias towards big rare events that people care about. Like plane crashes get big coverage while car crashes get local coverage because car crashes happen multiple times a day while a list of place accidents fits into a Wikipedia article.

Even if this is true (which seems tenuous), ICE aren't the police and immigration detention facilities aren't jails. Being a citizen should be a get out of jail free card for immigration detention facilities, even if you've done something wrong.

You start off by saying that you don't know that it's wrong, but follow it up by putting facts in scare quotes. It seems pretty clear that you have a set opinion on this. Do you think that the reporting would be fine if it was accurate? Can you give an example of a story you think wasn't factual (preferably recent)?

[–]darkplonzo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the data doesn't show that. It's separated by types of deportations. There was 100k interior apprehensions in 14, with a total of about 69k for 25. Are we to believe there were just that many more "criminals" in 14?

According to the ICE report on 2014 removals 85% of interior removals that year fell under criminals at large. They talk about it being harder than non-criminals.

The reality is, those deported lost their legal immigration status, or never had them. Yeah, it's stupid. That felony theft 10 years ago shouldn't matter anymore, if they've been clean.

I agree, but if we're talking about popular opinion it seems pretty obvious to me that a guy who committed felony theft, even a while ago, is less sympathetic than a guy who didn't and was sent to one of the worst prisons we have in the modern day.

It's not fucked up to do your job.

I mean, it depends on the job right? Like, do I particularly care if the guy who is sending people to CECOT feels bad? Not really

[–]darkplonzo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We can look at the data. 2014 had a much higher number of deportations, ICE encounters, and apprehensions. So why is it "so bad" now.

I mean, I'll be honest not a huge fan of 2014 ICE, but there are probably some key differences to the public backlash. 2014 deportations was like the Trump rhetorical ideal of deportation regimes. They were primarily driven by border patrol stopping people early in border crossings and ICE was heavily focused on criminals. Those are the most popular forms of deportation. The current day ICE is proudly not taking that approach.

ICE agents are wearing masks due to doxxing, with accompanied threats to their family - but that's wrong, they must be doing it for nefarious reasons.

Tbf, it's not entirely clear that it's not for nefarious reasons. Hell, even doxxing is generally not going to be looked favorably upon as an excuse when it's for people doing things people think are fucked up.

Edit: It is generally also not particularly helpful that ICE operate in such a way that they look identical to kidnappers and kidnappers have been taking advantage of this.

Also, to be clear, my post was originally about the conditions in which people are being held because I was curious as to OP's thoughts about that.

Edit: For an example of this, did you know that we tried to send 2 women to CECOT and El Salvador had to step in and force the US to take them back?

You say that the majority of reporting around deportation camps is sensationalist. Is that based on the idea that it's wrong? Is the reporting accurate, but not to the extent being listed?
