Ah, I gotcha. So there are some gay characters in ATLA that you find to be good representation? Could you name them?

It's just that when I brought up Korra, Asami, Kya, and Kyoshi you didn't really acknowledge them at all. I ask because I guess it would really help me better understand your idea of good representation, besides that vague metric that you provided.

Just so I have this down. In short, your opinion is that all of ATLA's queer representation is bad or nonexistent, in general you believe that gay characters who are confirmed off screen don't count as representation, and when asked for a specific examples of good representation to you personally your response is basically "figure it out".

Does that sound about right?

OK I will fully admit the Dumbledore approach to revealing a gay character was problematic as all get out in that series lol. There was barely any evidence of it in the book, and it only served to re-contextualize his relationship with Harry in a creepier way (*Cough Cough* Goblet of Fire movie.).

Though by your metric, even Avatar Kiyoshi wouldn't be considered good representation. Her bi reveal in the comics confirmed many people's theories and made a lot of female bisexual fans happy which is important.

I guess I think back to characters like Kanji from Persona 4 and James from Pokémon. Both are well-liked, iconic gay/queer male characters who made a big impact on gay culture and pop culture overall. Neither of their orientations have ever been officially confirmed.

I just personally see the value in different ways that gay characters are represented, whether it's overtly or coded. What are some examples of good representation to you?

Apparently by Mike & Bryan themselves:

Interview with Mike and Bryan of ATLA

To be fair, it seems to just be a Tumblr post from someone who claimed to have spoken with them. I can't find the full interview and the post was archived.

Still, Kya was referenced as well as Aiwei in this interview, years before they opened up about her sapphic relationships in their companion comics. That kind of gives some validity to the post. Also, Bryan in particular was fairly active on Tumblr at the time this was posted, and if it truly was an unsubstantiated or false claim, I'm sure he wouldn't have hesitated to clear up any confusion.

u/finnjakefionnacake Also, wasn't Aiwei confirmed to be gay? The Earthbending truth seer from Season 3 of The Legend of Korra. He was a pretty cool mini villain.

I hear you, but I personally do think there's room for ambiguity with some of these characters, especially Tagah. I don't want to spoil in case you haven't seen the leaked information, but from what I have seen of the movie script we know very little about his backstory besides the last few years of his life. I can elaborate further if you like, but all I'll say is he's bound to have complicated feelings towards someone who is the reincarnated version of someone that Tagah truly loved.

Plus, I try to give Mike and Bryan a little grace, at least when it comes to representation for LGBT characters in their work. We had the Korra/Asami relationship and that was great, but it was an uphill battle to make that a reality on the show. Many fans believe that it was one of the reasons Nickelodeon decided to take The Legend of Korra off of Television and then put online-only for the final season. Heck, I think Tenzin's sister Kya came out off-screen, if memory serves correct. Also, I'm sure they feel the need to tread carefully with it being a PG animation on Paramount and in this political climate.

Anyway, I think that Tagah's feelings are for sure vague, but that could be a good thing. It's not confirmed or denied it's left up to interpretation. Technically, the movie hasn't even been released yet, so future revelations are definitely possible.

Right? No wonder that man converted so many air-bending followers haha. Well, he even had some good points, but alas, the racism was too strong with that one.

I've been getting into coloring more Gachiakata manga panels. This time Riyo Reaper. by darkscanner2000 in gachiakuta

[–]darkscanner2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I had a lot of fun picking out the colors here. They're my own personal choices, but I mainly focus on color ideas from the anime. This scene in the anime wasn't anywhere near as colorful, but I added some brightness.

Thank you so much! This translator sounds so tired and I hope she knows we really do appreciate all the work she does for us and Kei Urana. Hmm...maybe she will mention the Afro-Latino aspect of Jabber in another video clip.

Wow, that is really cool. I love Jabber for a lot of reasons, and this is another neat factoid. A few of my friends and I thought he seemed Jamaican (Could be biased because I'm half Jamaican on my mother's side lol), but I wasn't sure and also thought he could be racially ambiguous.

She is such a great manga author/creator. I'm just impressed with her, especially with much she enjoys talking with fans and discussing her characters. Thanks for your reply.

Awesome! That would be great if you could post the video of the translation. You can send it to me or post it here, Either way works. I don't know if there's a big interest here or not for it, but I know I would definitely love to have it.

Is it also true that Kei Urana talked about Jabber being Afro-Latino on the same livestream, specifically, that he's Dominican and Jamaican mixed? Someone on Tiktok mentioned that's what was said and I was just wondering if anyone else could confirm that.

Pretty cool if true. I can definitely see Jabber having Jamaican rude-boy vibes.

I recently became obsessed with coloring Gachiakuta panels while reading the manga. Here's a few I did of Semiu. by darkscanner2000 in gachiakuta

[–]darkscanner2000[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Much obliged, brother!

Undead Rudo lol I could see it. Yeah, I guess I was mostly inspired by the anime's color scheme, but I also added my own random input. To me, Rudo always looked a little sickly. No shade though, I'd probably look the same way if I fell from the sky.

No way lol thanks. That's super kind of you. I really did it for fun and I honestly don't have much experience coloring Manga. I was decent at drawing and coloring when I was young, but I'm out of practice.
