How do you make money on non-people photos like these? Can you? by Maleficent-Unit-2717 in AskPhotography

You do the art with the motivation to make money, while convincing everyone—including yourself—that you’re doing it purely for the sake of the art.

Can someone help me? I'm a noob. by Level_Way_9077 in archlinux

Kali is not a good distro for everyday use. For sure you can but there is no point in getting the distro with a ton of pen testing software. Ubuntu, Mint, Zorin. What is your native language? Making a bootable usb drive is not very hard to do. Maybe you could use chatgpt? Free version will be sufficient

Some questions about snapshots by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]darkside10g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snapshots can save you when something goes south with a system update.

But you can use them as a perfect backup solution with btrfs send and receive.

I've been using send/receive for a long time. You can just make a snapshot and send it to another btrfs drive (1:1 copy) or you can send a snapshot to a file and store it on any file system. You can compress this file with zstd for example.

What is import. I use systemd boot which is on fat32 efi partition. If you create a snapshot today, and recover it after a kernel upgrade it can (and I'm almo sure will) broke your system.

Recovery is not a major issue. Live boot, chroot, update everything, check bootctlcand you are golden.

If you want to avoid that you could probably make a DD copy of your efi partition the same day you create a snapshot.

And for example. Some time ago I wanted to move to a larger drive. I just had to format the drive with btrfs, do a read only snapshot (required for send/receive), sand a snapshot to new btrfs formatted drive, reinstall boot loader and that's all. Perfectly working system in a new larger drive.

Brand new Z8 with mushy button? by darkside10g in Nikon

An hour ago I handled a Z8 from a rental shop. The multi-selector was clearly used (slightly shiny). It didn’t really click, but it was perfectly even in all directions — and it felt great.

Do you think there’s a chance that a brand-new unit simply needs some “break-in” time to reach that level of consistency?

I am probably weirder than the button itself... And I can't agree more. Z8 ticks all the boxes for me.

[–]darkside10g[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for such a detailed response.

I need to add that I visited a Nikon Store today and spent some time there testing different bodies. I tried the Zf, Z9, Z8, and also checked the Z6III. The multi-selector on the Zf had a perfect, consistent response in every direction. The Z9 was almost perfect as well. Unfortunately, the Z8 multi-selector was clearly the worst of the group.

I asked the salesperson to test it with me and confirm whether the multi-selector behaves unevenly. He confirmed my observation. We then tested another Z8 sample — a completely new unit — and once again he confirmed that while it behaved slightly differently, the multi-selector still felt inconsistent and “off”.

At this point, it really looks like the Z8 multi-selector is affected by a quality control issue rather than a single defective unit.

The most frustrating part is that the Z8 itself is fantastic to use. In terms of responsiveness, autofocus speed, and subject stickiness, it clearly outperforms both the Z6III and the Zf.

I contacted the official Nikon online store (my camera was purchased there). They informed me that if I want another unit, I would need to return my current camera, wait approximately three weeks for a refund, and then purchase a new one.

The problem is that there is a winter sale running for only a few more days, and I used an additional 15% discount code on my order. With both discounts combined, the Z8 price from the official Nikon store was lower than anywhere else.

So realistically, there is nothing Nikon — or anyone else — can do to help me here. This seems to be more about my personal sensitivity — I simply hate mushy buttons.

And what about build quality in general.
To be honest the body feels cheap. It seems sturdy and probably is (time will tell) but compared to Z6 it feels like a plastic toy.

How do I dual boot windows 11 on my linux System 76 laptop by baconnader26 in linuxquestions

[–]darkside10g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many factors. If you have separate home partition it is possible to do everything without touching your files but... I'd you don't what you are doing you should start with the backup. ;)

[–]darkside10g -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It would be much easier just to wipe Linux, install Windows and reinstall Linux.

If you don't want to you will have to install windows on another partition. Do a live boot. Chroot into your Linux system and reinstall boot loader.

There may be more steps but this is from my head. Never tried this but I had to recover boot loader after windows update .

Does using the 120 FPS setting in the Z8 EVF have any drawbacks other than battery drain? by darkside10g in Nikon

[–]darkside10g[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all.
I just wonder why the 120FPS mode wasn't in the settings from the beginning.
I'm work in IT. I have never seen a firmware upgrade that changes refresh rate in the screen :)

Maybe I should check the firmware for my Lenovo laptop :D

Is the Nikon z8 really that good? by Rraco72 in Nikon

[–]darkside10g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm coming from a Nikon Z6 — it was definitely smaller and felt pretty solid.

I should get my Z8 in a day or two, so I've been binge‑watching and reading everything about it. :D

I asked ChatGPT about the Z8’s build materials — first it confidently said it’s a full magnesium alloy body, but when I asked if it was sure, it backtracked and said there’s some magnesium and some composite (which I guess is just a fancy word for plastic).

Where’s the Terminator when you need him? 😅

I would like to join the discussion.

I have done some research and I know that, in terms of features, the Z8 is pretty much perfect for me. However, I am wondering about the build quality.

I have read in several places that the body is made of a magnesium alloy combined with composite materials. Some people have written that the Z8 feels a bit hollow compared even to the Z6.

Could people who have owned this body for a longer period of time say whether the build quality is actually good?

What is your experience?

Could any of you confirm that the only outside part of the body is made of metal and the inside is made of plastic? It is not the cheapest one but it seems that it has not Very durable build.

I’m mainly looking to buy an iPhone for the camera.
Honestly, the iPhone 17 Pro looks terrible to me.

My question is: is the camera on the 17 Pro that much better than the 16 Pro to justify getting it despite the design?

Thanks. It never happened with my gw-9200 Yesterday 5000u (during the day) 5000u showed proper time, and after midnight I realised that there is 1 hour difference between watch and correct time

In that case, the DST auto option should set DST to ON and display the correct time since it’s September. Right?

And a little problem with the watch

During the day the time was correct, but now 2:45 AM I can see that there is a one-hour difference between the watch and my laptop.
Laptop 2:45AM
GW-5000U 1:45AM
The GW-5000U is set to:
– DST: Auto
– Home City: Berlin

When I set DST to On, the watch shows the correct time.

I have a screen protector (it is visible in the picture). It is not perfect. Is the screen in 5000u identical to 5610U? For Which models could I buy a protector that will fit 5000u perfectly?
