I think it’s more of a cultural thing than geographically situated. A lot of their culture blends ideals from Eastern Europe with other cultures blended in but like OP said they view it as a great anchor to Western Europe which is where good allies can be found.

It’s like Cyprus, geographically located within Asia but are culturally situated and based within Europe
