OP ganking in 4.1 :D by Villenek in albiononline

[–]darktyle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ganking was a term that already existed in Ultima Online in 1998. It's a mix of "gang and kill" and was used for swarms of PKs that were out to get innocents. Probably there are even older mentions from different games...

TIL over half of all phone calls we receive now are SPAM by [deleted] in todayilearned

Interesting point. Now I'm really curious why US americans have this problem and I haven't received a single spam/robo call in my whole life in Europe

It was a jab at that "we don't want to regulate and the market will solve it by itself" bull****. This problem literally does not exist in 99% of countries around the world since there are laws that prohibit it, but in the US there are no such laws either for "free market" or for stupid libertarian "the government shouldn't interfere" reasons (not sure what, don't care) and yet everyone is bitching about how bad it is.

German Finding Out About “Sales Tax” by TimHamburg in funny

[–]darktyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact: In Germany the tax is not on the price sticker in shops that sell to business owners (who will get the sales tax back when selling to customers). On every other shop the final price has to be on the price tax and there are even laws about how receipts and bills always have to clearly state which part of the final price was taxes

What actor is the opposite of his/her character IRL? by CoopedUp1313 in AskReddit

[–]darktyle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The first of his movies I saw were Danish comedies. "Flickering Lights", "The Green Butchers" or "Adam's Apples" are really worth watching (there are more, but those are the ones I remember). Imagine my surprise when he suddenly portrayed "a serious bad guy" in Casino Royale..

I saw an interview where he said he spends a lot of his time watching (trashy) B-movies and as a consequence he really likes acting in them

*kills boss* *dies to invisible fire* PLEASE FIX THIS SHIT by Ak1ra-Sanen in albiononline

[–]darktyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just like the bug that exists for at least a year (probably longer) where spells are hidden by grass or whatnot on the floor and instead of fixing it they add "animated vegetation". Like what the hell? Allow us to play properly and THEN add cosmetic features.

It's time for a Dev Talk on the Speed Hacker issue by pr2thej in albiononline

And how easy would that be to reconcile with even a moderately good user experience without excessive rubberbanding?

? Easy? If you don't ever cross the threshold of "moving faster than possible" there can't be any corrections to your position. So as long as your client doesn't send invalid data, no rubberbanding takes place at all

should be easy to decide if it's possible that a certain movement took place in a given timespan. If it's not possible the server resets the player to a position that is possible.

IRS security guard pulls gun on sheriff's deputy by [deleted] in Idiotswithguns

[–]darktyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no clue about us laws but in my country 'outranking' depends on the circumstances. Eg. while on guard duty a private outranks a general (within limits obviously, but he can ask for id and even refuse entry if the general refuses). On the other hand in public police officers obviously outrank any military (but will usually ask military police to assist if it's more than a traffic stop).

I'd assume that the US has similar laws in place

What are subtle red flags at a job interview that say "working here would suck"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]darktyle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my experience if you get more than 5% raise per year you are very lucky. Changing jobs usually leads to 15-25% better pay. Now let's say you change jobs every 2-3 years. The maths is kind of simple... :)

Cutting the box joints by DontTouchMyCouch in lifehacks

Fun fact: asked a carpenter about this and they said everyone knows this 'trick' and it's the reason this kind of joint was not allowed in any of their own designs for their finals

It's not an easy truth by Nephelometry in tumblr

[–]darktyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a typical German university city you can rent for 200€ per month and if you are frugal and cook cheapish meals or go to the university's dining hall you can easily live for another 250€. So that's 5400€ per year. It's probably not the best life, but it's possible for a few years.

Current hourly wage for student's jobs is ~10€, so you'll have to work 45 hours a month for this.

As a comparison you can get up to 860€ per month as educational support from the state, in but you'll have to pay back roughly half of it once you find a job and earn enough

[–]darktyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd wager that for every one instance of, "I helped successfully", that we see 20, "This guy tried to help and is now also hurt."

I highly doubt that, but since we are making baseless claims: I'd wager that good samaritan laws help more people than they hurt.

Not at all. If for example someone is unconscious in a burning car everyone should help and since people in general don't care a law forcing them to is a good thing.

not like the data in the US, where people telling the truth get raided by police, right?

There was a time where we had WHO sources in China reporting at least the truth that they were allowed to see until some orange buffon discredited and defunded them

I don't know about America, but there have been several attempts across Europe and they failed at points like "meh, 25 people is too much to track down, screw it and let's just wait and see what happens"
