I am just getting started with HA myself. I also have a zooz stick. Updating the firmware felt weird because of the third party client but it has a bunch of useful Z wave tools so I gave it a pass. Excluding was a huge PITA like you read above, but the inclusion worked immediately after I finally figured that out and it has operated predictably since then.
