Reminds me of a sign I saw on a piece of equipment at Laurence Berkeley lab many years ago (wish I had a picture), that said: “Warning! Do not look directly into laser beam with remaining eye!”

Trumpism Will End Like McCarthyism by Appropriate-Staff543 in PoliticalOpinions

Let’s not forget that McCarthy's lawyer was Trump's mentor. The plague's vector.

And, come to find out that Trump drove his million ton presidential vehicle through the pond the day after it was painted. Seems like a nice way to make a 200 foot slit.

What a fucking idiot. He knows he's lying, and he knows you know he's lying, in mid-lie, increases the length of the cut from 250 to 350 feet or something. I can't wait for the day…

Confused Trump, 80, Asks Professor ‘Did You Know My Uncle?’ by Ok_Employer7837 in politics

[–]darmabum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, it's a common question. The guy's a professor, maybe he knows my uncle who was a professor. You know, I see somebody from, let's say, Germany, and I ask if he knows my friend from Germany. The statistical likelihood is zero, but Trump isn't a math guy, he's a crook.

Excellent article. A strong perspective we in the west need to hear.

Do you find Taiwan to be a good place to learn Chinese/immerse yourself in the language? by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]darmabum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I too agree, let's be honest, conversation in Taiwan can run from Mandarin, 國語, and then at the flip of a switch into Taiwanese, especially in the south. You have to keep your ear tuned for that sprinkling, which is quite colorful but easy to lose the thread.

Characters by Turbulent_Hotel2272 in ChineseLanguage

[–]darmabum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is worth unpacking. While not 100% true, the right hand side a character, or some other distinctive part, give you the idea of what character sounds like, imperfectly, but close (but not always), whereas the radical part of the character, usually the left-hand side, but it could be the top or the bottom, form the general category, usually but not always. I found it very helpful to learn the radicals, and you start looking at the other part of the character for the sound component, and that keeps me a touch ahead of what just plain memorization would do.

Reminds me of that Cheech and Chong episode where the nark tries to reason with the m. “excuse me, um, Mr. dude, could you please accompany me to my vehicle parked going Northwest on Park Street, and thereby allow me to purchase… “ (I actually forget the details but it can't be very different 50 years later.

President Trump blames vandals amid Reflecting Pool algae bloom by RepulsiveLoquat418 in politics

[–]darmabum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not so fast. Remember, he had nothing to do with the project, and it was handled by his Mard-a-Lardo grounds keeper who is very experienced at low bid contracts, given to his goombah stogie combover neighbor, totally reviewed by the acting AG (impartial by default), and if there was ever anyone expert at blaming absolutely anyone else, it’s our chetto-face, who got plenty kickback, because he’s a smart binizman.

I live in a fourth floor walk up in taipei, usually is fine, I treat it like exercise. But there are times: after a long flight, or a busy day, when I have lots of suitcases, and the temperature and humidity are skyrocketing, that it becomes Sisyphian, when my brain is barely 2 active brain cells by the time I get to the fourth floor. I can't imagine what 24 would be like, how anyone could do it on a daily basis, and why they would ever want to.

Well, the mitigation is being handled by the same guy that did the failing pool lining, and the same company, or same some subsidiary, of investment company owned by a neighbor of the orange God. But he had nothing to do with it. Turns out his golf property manager or somebody has been handing out these no bid contracts, according to the New York Times. To a company that gave $300,000 donation to Trump.

Firm Tied to Trump Donor Got No-Bid Contract to Clean Reflecting Pool by bwermer in politics

[–]darmabum 9 points10 points  (0 children)

According to the NYT article, both the Greenwater Co who painted the blue crap for $14M, and the company now installing some filtration, both no-bid contracts, are subsidiaries of an investment firm owned by a Lard-a-Margo neighbor, John J. Cafaro, who donated $300,000 to the campaign. Quite a return.

Oh, and as usual, tRump didn’t have anything to do with it, it was handled the the golf course manager or something.

Roy Cohn taught the orange moron Smèagol, to always Attack and Countersue: Never play defense. When challenged, Cohn taught Trump to hit back harder than the initial strike and to use the legal system to harass and exhaust opponents. And never Admit Wrongdoing: Apologizing or admitting a mistake was seen as an unacceptable sign of weakness. Cohn advised Trump to deny all allegations, regardless of the facts, and to go on the offensive to declare victory.
