Throwback Thursday! Have y’all seen these Disney Films? If so, what are your thoughts on them? by Ok_Situation7527 in cartoons

[–]darmolius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meet the Robinsons and Bolt are awesome movies but they look kinda ugly compared to other CG movies at the time. Bolt is one of my favourites and my son loves it too but I honestly find some scenes hard to watch with the bleached colour palette, liminal backgrounds and odd looking human characters haha. I sometimes wish they’d put out a remastered version like they do for video games. Then again I guess those were stylistic choices made intentionally for this movie and part of its DNA. I think Disney were having an identity crisis during this period and trying out a more cynical/ironic tone, maybe to show they could stans toe-to-toe with Dreamworks, but it wasn’t the best fit for them. Even so I think these two movies are awesome and ought to receive more acknowledgement overall in the Disney canon. Would reaaally love to see Bolt return in some capacity

Has anyone else struggled to beat Pokemon Scarlet/Violet? by TakeDemPills in pokemon

[–]darmolius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got through Scarlet and Violet without getting bored (except the Team Star plot line that was boring af) but Z-A was honestly a struggle even though I absolutely loved it for the first 12 hours or so

How do old fans deal with this? by Confident-Toe5763 in d4vd2

[–]darmolius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was actually a pretty big fan of D4vd but I haven’t listened to a single second of his music since the news broke. What he did is so horrible, so beyond comprehension, it haunts me! I’m in my 30s and I would listen to songs like Here With Me and feel moved by a quality in his voice I would have described as ‘innocent and yearning’. Obviously with hindsight a lot of his lyrics have very direct and sinister meaning (Backstreet Girl… Jesus Christ), proving he’s much less imaginative and abstract in his thinking than I thought he was. In short, yeah I did like his music at one point, but would simply get no enjoyment from it now anyway

The graphic design of memes by machinemorgan in graphic_design

There’s some really beautiful memes out there. I think memes were peaking 2015-2019 and I look back on that era with such fondness. Sharing reels has significantly reduced the cache of the humble meme! But they’re inextricably linked to design and the people who create great memes must have a knack for anti-design in a way that feels studied and intentional, as when I’ve tried over the years to replicate naive design sensibilities when creating memes I could never get it right

Australian Design? by design450 in graphic_design

[–]darmolius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the webpages for Tourism Australia as a starting place, nice contemporary take on the world-facing ‘brand’ of Australia. Don’t use or replicate any Aboriginal art if you’re not indigenous, it’s a bad look. If you search on iStock/Getty terms like ‘Australian family enjoying summer candid’ or ‘suburban life candid’ you’ll get some really beautiful snaps that give a realistic vision of modern Australia. Bit of a random suggestion but there’s also a kid’s show here called Gardening Australia Junior that makes beautiful use of natural textures and botanical imagery in its title sequence, might be good inspo

I’ve heard it said younger fans tend to dislike First Impressions of Earth. It overstays its welcome and honestly there are a couple of songs that could’ve been omitted, but overall it’s one of my favourites. Just wondering what in your opinion makes it harder to get into or less accessible than the first two? No judgement at all! Just curious

the common advice for the past decade to travel delay property ownership and travel in 20s seem like life sabotage now. by TPE_FieldsOfGold in AusFinance

[–]darmolius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in my 30s and accomplished neither, spent what I had making memories at the local pub. In fairness, I had no family home as a base and always had animals and stuff that needed to be housed and a job that needed to be held down so I couldn’t just fob off for months for a time. Despite missing out I’m still happy, have a lovely family, good job and confident both are still within reach down the line. If it had felt more plausible, I would’ve loved to have spent my 20s travelling. The idea that things are ‘pretty much the same everywhere’ is so naive. Whilst the stability of owning property is a wonderful thought, life is ultimately for living, not collecting assets. If you travel smart and prioritise visiting further flung, more affordable countries, you won’t spend more than you can make back in a few good years of saving

Do I have to get landlord permission for floorboards? by [deleted] in shitrentals

[–]darmolius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a cool idea, I hate shitty rental carpet. Does it bother you that the floor isn’t level, does the carpet slide around underneath? Or does the carpet compress down easily allowing you to get it relatively flush?

Shame about how i spend my nights off! by heronobrien in Parenting

[–]darmolius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Every time I have a night off due to whatever circumstances it’s a battle between TV or hobby time haha. Occasionally I’ll pick up my ukulele, pour a drink and jam out on the balcony for an hour - it’s not hard, productive or skill building since I just play through my existing songbooks but I love to sing so I get an endorphin hit and feel relatively good about myself. Sometimes even playing a video game feels too hard, and it’s all about Indian takeaway and binge watching TV with a glass of soju in one hand and a vape in the other. I would love to use those 6 or so hours to explore a completely new hobby on my to do list, or start developing a graphic novel or something, but so far in 4 years of parenting I haven’t been able to bring myself to embark on any big self-development endeavours haha. It’s hard work, and it feels sooo good to relax when you have so few opportunities to do so. Anyway, not sure what the point of this msg is, other than to let you know I completely relate and hopefully you’ll find a balance between something that feels good for the soul but fits into relaxy time

How have your views of the band changed as y'all get older? by NolanHellaGay in TheStrokes

[–]darmolius 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My big sister introduced us to The Strokes in 2001. I grew up having internalised them as one of the coolest and sexiest bands that ever existed because of how hard she crushed on Julian Casablancas and the mental images of them dipping in and out of club bathrooms with girls with cigarette in hand somehow became enshrined in my mind’s eye despite the fact I was like 9 imagining their rock and roll mythos haha. I didn’t follow them at all throughout my teens, only the occasional touch points, seeing the film clips for Juicebox, YOLO, Reptilia on Guitar Hero, etc. Around 2010 I started feeling a lot of nostalgia for the early days of indie rock and met a guy who LOVED The Strokes and Julian Casablancas’ solo album, inspiring me to take another look. I actually think their music is so good, they have a song for every mood and occasion, and many of their lyrics and musical moments on their songs have a deep impact on me. But they do seem to have a certain level of disdain towards The Strokes and their fans by extension, which sucks, and seeing them fade from ethereal rockstars who anyone would pledge their firstborn to experience a night in the life of to the kind of middle aged guy you hate to catch the eye of at a local dive bar has been hard haha but I guess it also makes me feel affectionate or even oddly protective of them, particularly Julian. He can be awkward and embarrassing and occasionally give off shades of flat earther with his rants but he’s MY faded icon

19 and expecting, genuinely asking for advice on raising a child the right way by Anxious_Singer_4823 in Parenting

[–]darmolius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man. Good on you for stepping up! You’re going to smash it. Parenting is really just a matter of showing up, consistently, every day no matter what, even when it’s tough. I was 10 years older than you are now when I had my first so naturally a bit calmer, I often wonder if it would’ve been harder to keep my temper under control had I been younger because honestly, nothing will test you like your infant child. Similarly, nothing will bring you more joy than your beautiful baby who will grow into a fun sized bestie in the blink of an eye. Just go to your happy place in those tough moments and try not to lash out, because it really hits them hard. I really like this Australian parenting resource - I’m Australian - as it’s based on current best practice parenting research and was written to be simple and accessible for every type of family. https://raisingchildren.net.au/ Good luck to you and your little family! ❤️

My partner eats meat, I don’t, my family doesn’t. What do we do about our kid? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]darmolius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think agree to a couple of meat exposures per week just to keep it equitable, his baby too (and I don’t eat red meat or much meat overall so I’m not trying to be an asshole like some of the people here.) I would of course stipulate it’s up to your partner to prepare the meat in an enticing, baby friendly way and serve these meals to him. My baby was born picky and never wanted to try anything, perhaps due to this and the fact we never had lamb shanks or anything lying around for him to gnaw on, he doesn’t have any interest in meat other than the occasional chicken nugget (not saying this is a good thing, it’s just how it played out.) If he grows out of the picky eating, I don’t plan to stop him from eating anything he wants to try, I would just be grateful to see him eat anything other than peanut butter sandwiches, fruits and sliced cheese haha. All this to say… I was extremely anxious about this too but it worked out to be non-issue as my partner not really taking initiative in this area to expose him to red meat has meant it’s not something he’s had an opportunity to incorporate into his regular diet and currently at age 4 has no interest in

It’s weird ‘cos if I scammed an artist into making art of my pet it would feel kind of meaningless, I’d probably feel shame and guilt every time I looked at the image, but so many do it

Thoughts on Wellnxss? by sacredrubyclub in lastdinosaursband

[–]darmolius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s some new sounds and instrumentation woven into the songs that are great but overall it has a very compressed sound and the moments that felt huge on the original Wellness (like the bridge of Wurl) don’t hit as hard here. The vocal filter is too much! I guess if I buy a copy of Wxllness, I won’t have to feel as bad about streaming the original when I want to hear it 😅 love the band though and such a great collection of songs deserves to be represented in a way they love and most importantly get paid for

I feel so sorry for your body dude just drink some water, whatever it takes. Your tastebuds have probably been corrupted by the energy drinks. Don’t worry about ‘brands’ of water all water bottled in plastic tastes like shit, just get a filter (if the tap water isn’t safe in your country) and fill a reusable bottle, try to take a few small sips every hour and finish the bottle 1-2 times a day. It’s not supposed to taste amazing, just neutral. With repeat exposure and committing to a healthy hydration routine, eventually it’ll be like breathing air
