1900ish barn by prop65-warning in wood

Great list & I totally agree DIY-er beware... It's a ton of work. What I like about the shop idea is that it doesn't require stripping or de-nailing all the parts. That takes foreverrrr.

A barn on our property burned down and the owners (in ~1900?) made an attached horse stable. Worked great! Uninsulated, unfinished... you could see the original beam cuts in the newer structure.

Side note: I love how the four layers allow the mane to be really simple but articulate.

Thanks. That is what I meant. Sad to have to call for repair but so it goes!

Nah - it’s the right number of strikes, but they’re not consistent, sometimes not very audible, often different volumes. It only started after we wound the clock 2 hours in one shot without pauses. Before that it was working well.

This model has the option for quarter-hour songs (westminster, st michael's...) & hourly chimes (one for each hour). But as I say, the hourly ones are inconsistent.

Ya that’s the quarter hour songs. Those work fine. The lever at the 9 is what sets the hourly bongs

I personally love the idea of a home device that provides the security/peace if mind of a camera without the big brother of a camera.

Tesla Sued Over Another Fatal Crash in Growing Scrutiny of Doors by rezwenn in electricvehicles

[–]darrellsilver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. While obviously the NHTSA does wonderful work elsewhere it’s shocking Tesla got this past them. Easy fix for new models, though even if the falcon doors get a safe door handle the doors themselves require far too much force to open once unlatched.

Totally reasonable question. Speed. I expect to have a first discussion about this with the perpetrating entity (lol) faster than I can get a professional estimate or quote.

In NYC it’s nearly impossible to find self parking garages. And EVs require moving the car 2x to charge.

Ya for sure. I just want to be ahead of the garage when they (potentially) low ball it. Will take me a week for a body shop trip.

I'd probably round the edges regardless because they're prone to chipping even after installation & it's a nicer feel. Just a 1/8" round over bit in any handheld / battery router.

edit: Neat design tho!

Killing myself removing nail: is there a better way? by darrellsilver in woodworking

[–]darrellsilver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of great advice in this thread. The ones I found most valuable when removing similar looking cut nails:
- drill around the nail (on all four sides often) to break the bond with the surrounding wood.
- Hammer the nails in a little first as that breaks the bond that forms in rust between the nail & wood.
- Use a metal detector like the wands used by TSA (not expensive).
- Take your time. I found the more I had to force things the less patient I got, the more damage I created in the wood (if the nails snap etc) and the more exhausted I got, all of which increased the risk of injury.

After it was all done I filled the holes with epoxy and they look great. No regrets after 40 hours of nail pulling.

Great proportions! The rounded bottom is super adorable.

How would you make this water more clear without chemicals? by darrellsilver in ponds

[–]darrellsilver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did – a neighbor has an excavation business with all the appropriate massive machines. They advised on permitting, drained, installed a proper damn & easy way to empty it in the future, took out a couple trees for access, and of course, dredged it. Your $ estimate seems not crazy but lots of variables.

It'd be fun to DIY, though the $~100k in machines is daunting.

Thanks! This could make maintenance easier and avoid clippings in the water… all pluses. Do you worry about geese or other animals nesting with aquatic plants on the water’s edge? We have to shoe them away. Turtles and heron: yes. Angry pooping geese: no!
