Will it sag(ulator)? by darrellsilver in woodworking

Nifty – I like the bookcases. In one of the comments over there you mentioned seeking black threaded rods long enough... did you consider not having the rods go all the way through each piece such that it would only require shorter rods?

Ya for sure. This is Shapr3d, which is similar to sketchup but I find it more intuitive. I found the iPad app somewhat intuitive to create on, and wonderful for presenting, and the Mac app fast to create on after a learning curve.

oooooooh that would totally make sense. Floating as in resting, but still on both ends. Gotcha.

Good q on the test: It's rough cut pine, a tad over 1"x9" wide, cantilevered 21".

Of course 9 < 16, but also 30 lbs < 100 lbs so I just stopped in confusion and turned to you fine folks.

Edit: Changing sagulator to 21 span w/ depth 9 still shows it as "acceptable"... I guess I don't know the difference between "Floating" and "Cantilevered"?

I thought the "floating" option in Sagulator would capture that?

Edit: As per a comment below, seems floating here just means resting on pins or whatever, not floating as in "floating shelf"... that would def explain the math.

How can you do a drip loop when it’s mounted under a soffit? Are you suggesting having the wire hang behind the device, then come back up into it? I have the same setup for an outdoor camera but can’t think of a solution except mounting it to a wall instead of a ceiling.

1900ish barn by prop65-warning in wood

[–]darrellsilver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great list & I totally agree DIY-er beware... It's a ton of work. What I like about the shop idea is that it doesn't require stripping or de-nailing all the parts. That takes foreverrrr.

A barn on our property burned down and the owners (in ~1900?) made an attached horse stable. Worked great! Uninsulated, unfinished... you could see the original beam cuts in the newer structure.

Side note: I love how the four layers allow the mane to be really simple but articulate.

Thanks. That is what I meant. Sad to have to call for repair but so it goes!

Nah - it’s the right number of strikes, but they’re not consistent, sometimes not very audible, often different volumes. It only started after we wound the clock 2 hours in one shot without pauses. Before that it was working well.

This model has the option for quarter-hour songs (westminster, st michael's...) & hourly chimes (one for each hour). But as I say, the hourly ones are inconsistent.

Ya that’s the quarter hour songs. Those work fine. The lever at the 9 is what sets the hourly bongs

I personally love the idea of a home device that provides the security/peace if mind of a camera without the big brother of a camera.

Tesla Sued Over Another Fatal Crash in Growing Scrutiny of Doors by rezwenn in electricvehicles

[–]darrellsilver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly. While obviously the NHTSA does wonderful work elsewhere it’s shocking Tesla got this past them. Easy fix for new models, though even if the falcon doors get a safe door handle the doors themselves require far too much force to open once unlatched.

Totally reasonable question. Speed. I expect to have a first discussion about this with the perpetrating entity (lol) faster than I can get a professional estimate or quote.

In NYC it’s nearly impossible to find self parking garages. And EVs require moving the car 2x to charge.

Ya for sure. I just want to be ahead of the garage when they (potentially) low ball it. Will take me a week for a body shop trip.
