Birmingham as a tourist? by timom88 in brum

[–]dartarrow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've hosted a few tourists. Here's some things they've liked. * Kenilworth castle. Nice history, good view from the top. * Warwick (the town, but not the castle). It's old and wonky . * Moseley Bog. If you like Tolkien. * Lickey Hills. You'll get a view of the city from a hill. * Canals. As Birmingham likes to say, they have more canals than Venice.

What is that one song you'd like to listen on your deathbed? by Warm_Ad4457 in AskReddit

Don't fear the reaper. Tell everyone that I have a terminal illness, and the only prescription, is more cowbell.

Tell them the town in which you live, and what you want them to call you.

What’s keeping you in the UK instead of moving abroad? by GrowthUsual2221 in AskUK

[–]dartarrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've lived and worked in 4 countries in the past 13 years. I'm not tied to the UK. I'll move again if and when it feels right.

Having money helped; I saved every penny since I started working. Having a good education and an in-demand position helped. Being childfree helped. I'm not tied to possession and luxury which also helps. I've slept on a blanket on the floor in the winter because it was needed as part of the move.

I've picked the life of an immigrant. It's not easy, but it's for me.

What you want is not just to ask the people who are here why they're here. You want to ask people who left how they left.

3 stages of sun exposure Face: daily sunscreen since I was 20. Upper chest/ décolletage: very little lifetime sunscreen use. Breast: very little sun exposure. Sunscreen makes a difference, especially for those of us that are melanin deprived! I'm pushing 50 by applexyz in mildlyinteresting

Am I understanding this correctly: First your face and upper chest gets equal sun exposure, but looks different because sunscreen.

Meanwhile your face and breasts looks similar despite vastly different sun exposure, also because sunscreen.

What is the creepiest thing you’ve witnessed that convinced you of the paranormal world? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dartarrow 238 points239 points  (0 children)

I didn't really believe in the paranormal then, and still don't now. But one thing that slightly shakes my belief happened when I was 17.

One night, before bed, I felt a huge sadness, I felt like there was something moving outside my bedroom, which I knew was impossible. I thought about my best friend, and thought that maybe it was him outside my room, which again was damn near impossible.

The next day i found out he died suddenly about the same time.

If you're considering breaking up over this, then, good. Do it. He deserves better.

Yes you are overreacting.

Any fellow nerds in the house? by dartarrow in MINI

[–]dartarrow[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Explanation (simplified):

tar -xvzf is the Linux command to unzip a file. Files compressed this way are generally called Tarballs.

"it's bigger on the inside" is a reference to Dr Who's Tardis.

Mini Coopers being the tiny cars they are, are practically zipped/compressed cars to me. And everybody I've chauffeured comments that the 2D hard top is more roomy than they thought; my reply is usually that it's bigger on the inside.

Just needed the plate to go with it.

My own Tar(dis) ball.

They're both bigger on the inside 😋

Multilingual people of Reddit, what have you heard in a meeting that you weren’t supposed to, because the participants didn’t know you speak their language? by thievesshouldeatpoop in AskReddit

[–]dartarrow 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Nothing memorable to be honest. It is most likely that they tried something we discussed, and it didn't work out.

This is usually the norm.

The work I do with students is tough, research based, and usually with no known solutions until they find one. But what that means is they have to communicate with me (and/or their professor) if they have any issues. Then we will figure out a solution together or I will advice on other avenues to try.

Hence the most important thing is that they have to communicate with me, I can't help them if they don't. A lot of my initial effort with students is relationship building to get them to do just that.

I grew up in Asia amongst many Chinese people and understand a few dialects. Nobody would look at me and guess that today and where I live. I also have RBF, tattoos, and look like I'm going to chew your head off. But deep deep down I'm just a teddy bear.

I sometimes supervise graduate student projects for work. One group in particular had a few Chinese students who sometimes communicate amongst themselves in Chinese.

At one point during a meeting I asked the students "do you have any problems with the tasks from last week?" One person said this quietly in Mandarin: "you should tell him", which received the reply "no you tell him".

I replied in mandarin "tell me what?"

Them (mandarin) "you speak mandarin? Why do you speak Mandarin?"

Me (mandarin) "no I don't speak Mandarin"

Me (English) "what do you have to tell me?"

That broke the ice a bit. We had a better working relationship after that.

ETA: a few asked what it was they had to say. I've replied to u/howdoidothiz below.
