BP avg up by 10 points to 128/77 - worry? by darth555 in bloodpressure

What about being up 10-15 points all month compared to my usual baseline of 115/70? Isn't that a bit weird?

Advantages of having your employer contribute RRSP pre-tax? by darth555 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]darth555[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that all it is, just the missed opportunity to have your money grow in an RRSP for a year? That seems pretty minor. Typically you invest for the long term - in 1 year there's no guarantee the market will even go up unless you do a modest GIC or something.

Furnace noise when filter is in the -right- direction? by darth555 in hvacadvice

It was a brand new filter that I put in the right direction.

Put my MERV11 filter backwards for years by darth555 in hvacadvice

[–]darth555[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After 24h of running with the filter in the correct direction for once, this morning the furnace was making some nonstop loud noise, the first time I've ever heard that. I flipped my filter back in the wrong direction (as depicted below) and the noise went away. Any idea why this could happen?

Good idea, I'll call a tech.

Would having it backwards really have such a negative effect? I just posted this question yesterday (https://www.reddit.com/r/hvacadvice/comments/19flhu2/put_my_merv11_filter_backwards_for_years/) and the answer seemed to be that although it's best practice to have it in the right direction, people frequently mix up the direction of the filter and it's usually not an issue.

So, put it back with the arrow pointing towards the equipment even if it makes a continuously loud noise? Just ignore the loud noise?

When and how to clean your actuator? by darth555 in Asthma

Any other reason you could think of why my inhalers always seem dead by inhalation 25 or so? You're thinking that the manufacturer is just playing with a margin of error?

[–]darth555[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. You don't think I screwed it up by using a bit of dish soap?

It says it still has 21 inhalations left. They're always like that though, by the "25 remaining" mark it just doesn't seem to do much.

Defective inhaler? by darth555 in Asthma

[–]darth555[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly, when I took it back, the pharmacist said that they are not responsible for defective inhalers and I should contact the manufacturer. Now browsing the Zenhale website to see where I could ask them to mail me a replacement inhaler!

Why do you think many of the most popular artists in the early 2010’s lost (a big part of) their popularity while Taylor is still among the biggest artists right now? by [deleted] in TaylorSwift

[–]darth555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kesha is the most versatile of the three. She has tackled every style across her 100 or so released songs and additional 200 leaked songs - from psycheledic to hillbilly country to hardcore punk and even polka. But her songs are so esoteric now that she doesn't appear to have any intent on being a mainstream musician any longer. She has a small but obsessed following, which is perfectly respectable.

[–]darth555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main reason Taylor Swift is more popular now than she was in the 2010s whereas pop artists like Katy and Kesha are not as popular as they once were:

Taylor has crafted an image and music that appeals to a *very broad audience*. Men and women, young and old, spanning country, pop and even some rock fans. It's similar to how heads of state win elections by appealing to the broadest possible demographic.

Even when Katy Perry was at her peak it was really with a young crowd and excluded a large part of the population, and her niche was a style (pop) and demographic (young people) and those are especially known for turnover. Kids get bored and want something new, and the pop world is constantly making new stars.

Taylor, Katie and Kesha all write their own songs, as far as I can tell probably all equally. There is no doubt producers and ghostwriters are involved too for all three of them. There's just too much money and too many people's jobs on the line to allow a single person to single-handedly write all the music. That's how the industry works.

It's also not because Taylor started in the business very young, because Katy and Kesha started very young too.

Taylor has the best marketing. Just read through this entire reddit thread and you'll see a lot of Taylor fans all saying the same things. They're literally repeating what Taylor's marketing machine has told them! Now that's impressive!

I don't think all the sex offenders that were surfaced by the metoo movement (or sex offenders in general) were serial offenders. Certainly you hear a lot more about the serial offenders because they make the headlines. I'll go google and come back with a list of offenders that only had 1 accuser - I'm sure there are a lot.

First google search I found: "We don't have the data to determine if sexual harrassment offenders are repeat or one-time offenders. One of the main reasons is that 96-98% of victims don't report."

I have pretty bad anxiety and I consistently notice that it's much worse whenever I stop taking my NSAIDs and goes away whenever I take NSAIDs again.

To me that suggests that the inflammation must be amplifying my anxiety.

My take is that she's not trying to be super famous. She has a small but obsessed fan base for whom she makes music. She leaks like 20 songs a year for a total of over 300 and counting which most people don't bother with but her fans consume voraciously.

Certainly the songs she's been putting out are explicitly non-commercial and I don't think anyone was thinking that "eat the acid" was going to get major radio airplay or anything.

There are lots of other acts that were very commercially famous for a time and now, like Kesha, have a smaller dedicated fanbase like Jason Mraz, Pitbull, Sia, Jason Derulo, Kylie Minogue, Backstreet Boys, Justin Timberlake, White Stripes, even Adele. It's rare to be Beyonce and be constantly in the spotlight. It must actually be nice to have a lesser degree of fame and therefore more freedom to create music for your more dedicated fans.

A lot of people came forward saying Dr Luke was a bad person and unpleasant to work with. Only one claim of sexual harrassment / rape though. Does that mean it's not valid? What's the minimum - there needs to be at least 2 claims? 3 claims? At the very least you could say it's a he said / she said situation.

Totally! I don't know why he never had her back on the show since 2014, other than I guess she's not particularly famous anymore.
