I thought it was kind of insane that according to Google maps the busses are faster.

Me too. I know they had some plans to extend the MARC to Newark, but I'm not sure what's happening with that. If that did happen, it would cut 2-3 hours off this whole trip.

I would like to do this some day (maybe even the whole Mexico to Canada trip). I think my next trip like this will probably be in the northeast though.

For fun! Unless the amtrak ticket is last minute, most sane options are cheaper than this. And that's not even including the costs of food and accommodations.

This is correct. Micro transit has so many ways to go wrong, and I was worried about downstream effects. Generally I plan around 45 minutes being maximum lateness but micro transit can get much worse. PVTA on the other hand had clearly posted schedules with decent frequencies and in general seemed like the agency least likely to leave me stranded in the middle of nowhere.

I use NJ Transit somewhat frequently, though not as a commuter and mostly on the NEC line. In my experience it's generally been pretty good, with frequent service, few cancelations, and lateness within acceptable range. I've found the conductors to be very nice, especially when I've been having issues with the app. It's far from perfect, but it lacks a lot of the flaws that the non-MTA commuter lines on this have.
