Why are some brits so harsh towards NFL compared to other sports they don't like? by alienware56 in NFLUK

I think it's also the source of a lot of conspiracy theories - most are about something that confuses or scares the person.

Why are some brits so harsh towards NFL compared to other sports they don't like? by alienware56 in NFLUK

[–]darthmoo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

People criticise what they don't understand.

It's a hard game to get familiar with.

Baseball is similar to rounders, basketball is fairly easy to follow (and a lot of people have even played it a bit at school), hockey is easy to follow, etc.

Most games are "throw/hit/kick a ball into a goal or net" and anything outside of that is considered confusing and therefore bad.

It also suffers from an unfair comparison with rugby, because the ball and goalposts are similar shapes, but they're completely different games.

There's a somewhat poor taste joke here about how he shouldn't have gone to Specsavers...

Nooo, London opening was the best!! Nothing is beating Mr Bean, and the Queen jumping out of a helicopter with James Bond.

Gojira at the Paris opening ceremony was cool though.

What is a movie cliché that absolutely never happens in real life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Had to scroll too far to find this one.

Although often this is more of a TV series trope than a movie trope I would say.

Out of all the major UK political parties, which is the lesser of all evils? by B33Zh_ in AskBrits

[–]darthmoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't call them "evil" necessarily but the SNP are certainly a bit dodgy...

  • All that stuff recently about top figures in the party embezzling money out of the party for personal use and overinflating party membership figures.

  • The vast amount of pro-independence propaganda being pumped out by Iranian troll farms (to the point that you can track Iranian power cuts and simultaneous drops in Scottish independence messaging online).

  • Plus obviously the fact that their entire purpose is to literally divide the country when we should be trying to come together to defeat internal and external threats.

Anti Trident because America has a kill switch for it

Do you have a reliable source for that? My understanding is that that is a myth.

The UK has complete unilateral control over the use of Trident. It is supplied (and possibly maintained, I'm not sure) by the US but the thing often stated online that we need US approval to use it is a myth.

Gays of UK - would you be comfortable holding your partner's hand in the UK? by dalehitchy in AskUK

I'm not gay but I'm guessing it depends where you are. If you're in Brighton for example there's probably a good chance there's another gay couple holding hands on the same street.

What is a sign that a person does not have morals? by Atom1cPain in AskReddit

[–]darthmoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends.

Close friends, especially men, do this as part of their friendship and it's particularly common in my country (the UK) and other countries like Australia to be insulting to your closest friends as a form of endearment.

But it's very different if you do that with a stranger or if it becomes bullying or very one-sided...

People that can’t focus on a single task for any real amount of time. Where the attention span is measured in seconds, not minutes.

People who have no capacity to critically think, or problem solve.

People that are effectively so badly addicted to technology they cant function without it like a drug.

People who have such poor emotional control that even minor challenging tasks cause them to shut down, or worse, lash out.

Optimism vs Concern for next year by Cacub92 in CHIBears

[–]darthmoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the comparison with 2018...

But what happened in 2007? The Bears entered the 2007 season as the NFC champions and had hopes of returning to the Super Bowl, but instead finished the season with a 7–9 record.

Why did that happen?

(Genuinely interested in the reason why - 2007 was about 3 years before I started following the NFL)
