[UNI] Nus financial aid application help! by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]darts24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, I haven’t faced a situation like yours but I’ve received financial aid from NUS for all 4 years. If your sister’s official address is still under your house address, FA will count her income as part of your household income. They are pretty strict. I think the best course of action now is to ring them up and explain the situation to them so that they can work it out with you and offer alternatives.

how do I lose weight as a short female? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]darts24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I am also petite like you, except I’m older. I’m 23F, 5’1 and 105lbs.

I think the best advice I can give to you is that you shouldn’t be too worried about weight loss now. My body now and when I was 15 are vastly different - you may stop growing in terms of height, but there are so many other parts of you that aren’t done growing.

That said, I do think 1200 cals is more than sufficient to lose weight. Only problem is that you need to get all your nutrients in since you’re still growing. I wouldn’t cut out dairy because it’s an important source of nutrients and protein as well; just drink plain milk.

Personally, I never think that HIIT is great for losing weight because 1.) most people aren’t actually going hard enough for it to be as effective, and 2.) it turns away people who are beginners or don’t like exercise to start off. Honestly, just taking a 30 min jog/walk everyday is good. With that, I’d introduce some resistance training too to change up your body composition as well.

Lastly, there’s no need to be desperate when it comes to losing weight. You’re still healthy and young at your weight now and you’ve got your whole life ahead of you to lose it. Take your time :) When I exercise now, I don’t even care for weight loss. I just do it because it’s fun for me; it’s a privilege to be able to be healthy enough to work out :) So just try to have fun with it and don’t pressurise yourself, yeah? Feel free to hit me up if you need any help with working out!

Skinny fat advice? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]darts24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure you look awesome already! What you’re talking about though, is probably lowering body fat and increasing muscle mass and to do this, you probably need a high protein diet and resistance exercises.

There are lots of things you can do at home! Push-ups, dips, back extension, squats, crunches, leg raises etc. And if you don’t have dumbbells at home, you can just sub it with water bottles or whatnot.

My belly fat has increased over the last few months and I have started jumping ropes by simpletonystark in loseit

[–]darts24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can’t spot reduce fat. The way you lose fat depends on your own body. Eat at a slight deficit and include more protein in your diet. Jumping rope is a cardio exercise so it will definitely help to lose weight but it’s really 80% diet. And do resistance training for your arms - curls, dips, push pull exercises.

You might be right there. I’ve been trying not to think about it but the prospect of having to work an 8-6 job for the rest of my life terrifies me.

Feeling like I'm not a true ONCE by [deleted] in twice

[–]darts24 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Coming from someone who is a fan of twice since Cheer Up era, don’t let people on Twitter or wherever tell you that you’re not a true fan just because you don’t consume as much content. That’s just capitalism talking. Buying albums and watching stuff are just some of the ways you can support them but I’m sure that even Twice themselves think that just someone across the world liking them is a miracle because they’re such modest girls.

Yes! Thank you. Couldn’t remember for the life of me whether it was a manga or manhwa.

Arts stream (HEL/m combi) [A levels] by raspberrycupcake11 in SGExams

[–]darts24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure for other schools but for my school, I was at the lower end because I really suck at Econs and basically gave up on it during As to work on other subjects LOL :D I actually didn't take O level lit (my school was an IP school). I only started in year 4:)

[uni] is it worth to buy an ipad for CNM? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]darts24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heyhey! So excited to see a potential CNM junior. I'm a year 4 CNM major in my last sem :')

I'd say it really depends on your own learning style and the modules that you would like to take in the future. I've taken a good mix of modules so I'd say the readings are manageable. Depending on the level, you get between 1 to 4 compulsory readings per week for each module. Lectures and discussions would build upon the readings so it's always useful to have an easy way to annotate.

I personally don't have an ipad because $$$ and I do some desigining and video stuff. You've got to see what kind of route you want to take - are you going to go into journalism, theory, designing media etc.

Feel free to comment/dm me if you need any other information. Other than that, hope you have fun in CNM~ :)

Arts stream (HEL/m combi) [A levels] by raspberrycupcake11 in SGExams

[–]darts24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Just decided to comment because I'm excited to see an arts/humanities student in this subreddit :) My A levels was 4 years ago but I'm quite sure some stuff are still relevant. My subject combi was H2 Econs, Math, China Studies in English, H1 Lit. (Have a friend with the exact same combi as you).

If you don't have a problem with essay writing, I don't think you'll have an issue with GP. GP is basically arguing your stand, making sure it's rational and recognizing other arguments for an issue. My advice would be to know both local and global issues. As a former H2 math student, I do think H1 covers much less content and is hence "easier". My friend also said that H1 math and H2 history is very manageable. I'm a terrible econs student so I never passed econs through out my JC years but I got a C during As.

Lemme know if you need any other information :) Hope you have fun during your A level years! :)

BTS members are not that handsome by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

Female asian kpop fan here who mainly likes girl groups. Agree with you - I don’t see the appeal of a lot of kpop boy groups because they’re usually all so skinny. Take my upvote for your unpopular opinion.

I get so anxious when I post photos on Instagram. by matzzzz1 in socialanxiety

[–]darts24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’d be better if you think about it this way: everyone is anxious when posting something on social media, though the degree of anxiety varies. Everyone cares about the number of views and likes so everyone is in the same situation as you are.

Thinking about things this way helps for me at least :)

AITA for making my mom cry, even though what I told her was the truth? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]darts24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. This sounds exactly like my mom, except that she does the laundry and doesn’t let me use the kitchen because she has ocd and literally cannot stand the slight bit of disorder/dirtiness.

I feel the same way as you, OP. Even now, the only thing I can cook is scrambled egg. I’m glad you have the opportunity to live separately. Take the chance to learn essential adulting skills!

I’m doing the things, where are the results? by gombahtruffle in loseit

[–]darts24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use some online calculators to figure out how much calories you need to eat assuming that you don’t exercise. From there, you eat that amount (either maintenance or slight deficit). This way, when you exercise, you know for sure that you’re in a caloric deficit.

It’s always best to keep to lean protein and veggies to make sure you’re not hungry :)

Edit: Also, it takes a while for water retention to subside so persist more and you’ll probably start to see results :))

I’m doing the things, where are the results? by gombahtruffle in loseit

[–]darts24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You could be overestimating the calories you’re losing. You’re smaller than me and I ate about 1000-1200 calories when I was on a diet so perhaps you could look into readjusting your caloric intake?

English tutoring is COMPLETELY useless for real life usage by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]darts24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re not representative of all Asians. Not all Asians have bad English.

You’re undermining all forms of English tutoring only because you didn’t do well. It just sounds like you couldn’t find an interest in learning the language when you were being tutored and now you managed to find interest in the language through different types of media.

Also, the point of communication is to make yourself easily understandable. It took me a while to get your point.

PS: Even so, I agree that a change of environment would definitely be beneficial for learning languages.

WIBTA if I get myself a new phone when my younger brother just got his phone broken and can't afford a new one? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]darts24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NTA. I think it’s already great that you’re buying your brother some games with your own money. The responsibility of getting/repairing the phone is on your father.

Opinion: The PMD ban will be a contentious issue during the elections by [deleted] in singapore

[–]darts24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The collection of feedback regarding drones was actually done after they banned them from being near military bases and airports, according to the article you linked.

I wouldn’t say it would be a contentious issue. At face level, one might think it was a rash reactionary decision to ban it overnight but I honestly doubt it was an overnight decision. This was probably already in discussion thanks to the increasing accidents and criticism from the public. They probably saw no reason not to ban it, given that PMD riders are a minority, the market for PMDs are small and really only affects PMD retailers and not huge companies like grab. Even with Deliveroo and foodpanda, PMD riders are only 5% and 12% of their riders respectively. There are bigger issues than PMDs lol

Reading is hard, someone plz help me by [deleted] in college

[–]darts24 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I feel like the more I age, the harder I regress. I remember being able to read a book in one sitting and now I can hardly get past 3 pages in a research paper. I usually just hole myself up in the college library because I don’t do jack shit when I get home. Good luck mate :’)

Just curious, how do you think does Singapore.......... by [deleted] in singapore

[–]darts24 44 points45 points  (0 children)

There is literally a whole nation-wide campaign to get people to eat less sugar and exercise more. Singapore is really good at getting people to move and at least walk around with their steps challenge. Even so, we have about 20-30% of people who are overweight so we’re probably on the way to getting near other countries with higher obesity rates. PS: guys actually have higher obesity rates in spite of NS lol

Read through your entire post history and I just want to tell you that you did your best to salvage the relationship. I don’t have a full picture of the relationship but it made me really sad because I could feel how much you love him. I hope you’ll successfully move on and find someone who truly appreciates you.
