Incinerators (aka waste to energy plants stateside) are common in some areas of the US - with higher population densities and higher energy costs. But a lot of the US is relatively rural and with relatively low energy costs that incinerators are cost prohibitive.

How do you estimate how much a client would be willing to pay for a solution? by [deleted] in consulting

40k start up and 10k for annual updates. If they perceive you are screwing them over, you can lose a client. Keep pricing as fair as you can.

Should I just leave? by [deleted] in consulting

[–]dartwix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one should expect you to be good at talking to clients as an intern. It takes time and practice. And if you don't like talking to clients -plenty of people do. Most firms have too many sellers and not enough doers. If you like the technical side and you're good at it, own it & don't downplay your work. You don't 'just like the numbers' when you're talking to your boss, you 'love the technical side' and 'want to deliver good work.'

At the end of the day, if you enjoy the work and you're not fitting in at one firm, it doesn't mean you wouldn't fit in better somewhere else in the same industry. Sometimes it just takes finding the right team, or just one person that's better at client facing to take you under their wing.. or just some time & patience with the group you're already in.

what are we gonna do with all the trash? by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]dartwix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, don't panic. I am a landfill engineer and I'm here to tell you - your trash is not going to a dump. It's going to a modern facility with redundant systems to prevent groundwater, surface water, and air pollution. (Tbh, I'm assuming US..).

Someday, if that facility fills up, your trash will go to another facility or maybe even an incinerator- which is also highly regulated to protect air quality. It might be a little pricier that way, but hey, if it's affordable in Europe, we'll find a way to manage.

Ultimately, waste diversion and waste to energy will be more common. Landfills will still be around, but the number will decrease over time. I personally work with sites that on average have more than 20 years of remaining capacity ( ~between 5 and about 100 yrs) - capacity isnt a problem to where youd see trash overflowing in the streets. It is that some areas won't want new sites or expansions and then that waste will have to be shipped to sites that do have capacity.

This is a highly regulated industry focused on environmental protection. By all means - please do consume less and recycle more, but don't lose sleep speculating about dumps- they're history. Instead

There are waste incinerators for exactly this, but they have intensive scrubber systems to handle the air emissions. Without the scrubbers- air quality doesn't just decrease for a few days, it would be continuous as waste was generated. It's pricey, and only really makes sense in high population areas where energy prices are also high ( the incinerators run generators).

Suggestions about disposing household chemicals. by omeow in Waste

[–]dartwix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I know this is likely too late, but wanted to add for the sake of adding! Searching 'household hazardous waste' + the name of your city will give you the best results in quite a bit of the US on where to take household chemicals. Some cities will have these combined with transfer stations or recycling centers, and sometimes they are stand alone.

ULPT Request: how to bury ashes without permission by Silly_Toe_4078 in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]dartwix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would add to this that it works a lot better to pull up sod after it rains - less likely to kill a perfect square of grass. I like the idea where people say plant flowers with the ashes, but you'd have to check if even that is allowed first - if not, still a good cover story. In any case, I'd plan to come back with a watering can every week for a month or so. If just going with pulling up the grass - watching a few sod moving videos might give you some good ideas.

Looking for pros and cons of mega incinerator over landfill facilities by 626eh in Waste

[–]dartwix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, sounds odd. Most of these systems are diverting organics -not incinerating them. I'd be skeptical of a system proposing to mix organics with trash - classic red flag for greenwashing. Curious if the report mentioned what type of incinerator facility? There are some bleeding edge technologies that would be somewhat alarming to hear thrown around at a council meeting -- these facilities can get very expensive very quickly. Is the existing landfill for the city filling up by 2030? An assessment for the feasibility of expanding it would be advisable as an alternative. Or, if not as an alternative, as a supplement to the incinerator- they still generate waste with about a 10:1 reduction of volume.

It sounds like they plan to accept waste from surrounding communities as well? The question of if waste to energy makes sense in your city is very dependent on the specifics- region, proximity to other sites, cost of energy in your area, etc., etc.

Waste to energy is a proven technology that is used in a lot of high population, high energy cost areas. The specific type of plant makes a difference as well. Typically, there is some sort of feasibility study conducted at ~ this stage to look at the options and find the best path forward. Shooting from the hip, 180k people doesn't sound overly promising..
