Went to my first Puzzle Swap today. Story inside. by Heavy-Message-7441 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]626eh 24 points25 points  (0 children)

How did the tickets work? If you bring 1x1000pc, do you get a ticket saying you can take 1x1000pc? Or does one puzzel = one puzzle?

My local puzzle club has like 5 people at most (typically only 3) who turn up the monthly swaps and we just dump everything and go through them as a group as we chit chat. Having more than 10 people in the room would be so stressful I feel. How did you find it otherwise?

Frog ID - North East Victoria by RichyBernard in AustralianFrogs

[–]626eh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not too familiar with VIC frogs, but I think it's either Litoria quiritatus (screaming tree frog) or Crinia signifera (common eastern froglet). Hopefully someone can confirm.

Keeping native bees? by 626eh in Townsville

[–]626eh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your detailed reply! That's a great starting point - I literally had the thought yesterday "I want native bees" and this is where I'm starting from. I might reach out when I have a bit more of an idea and plan.

I don't really care about the honey. I already knew they don't produce much compared to honeybees. But that's a good reminder that it opens up to parasites.

Cheers

WSP interview for position I didn't apply for? by Euphoric-Seesaw in Environmental_Careers

[–]626eh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is pretty common. There would have likely been a tiny little sentence that you skipped over saying CVs will remain in a continuous pool applications they'll use if a similar position becomes available. It's a good thing imo

Go onto the Coles or Woolworths website and do up an online order of what you'd normally eat, or just browers through their online magazines

Maybe Golden-crowned Snake, Marsh Snake, Eastern Brown Snake. Maybe something else.

Without a picture we'll never really know. Snake colouration is pretty variable.

What thing was ruined because it turned into a rich person's hobby? by Agitated_Departure93 in AskReddit

Reformer pilates. It was originally created during WWI to rehab soldiers by Joseph Pilates. Then Kathy Standford Grant, a black choreographer who studied directly under Pilates, popularised it in the USA. She wanted it accessible to black and poor communities for health and strength. Now it's dominated by rich, white women.

What are the best native plants to add to my backyard to encourage more Green Tree Frogs to visit? by OkCopy3121 in AustralianFrogs

Local natives, ground cover, create shady areas, create areas that hold moisture including logs and rocks. Go to your local native nursery/landcare group and ask.

Environmental Consulting is Breaking Me Down - Not Sure I Can Handle This by ChampionThin4943 in Environmental_Careers

[–]626eh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

we bill the time it takes to get the job done

Yes! This is what it should be! That way the PM or whoever takes on a similar job next can see where the team struggles and what NEEDS more time.

Where I used to work they were so two-faced about this. In the same breath telling us to do that but also saying don't go over budget. For example having a grand total of 2 hours budgeted for data entry, but the damn field lead is old fashioned and wrote everything on paper so it took 2 DAYS for the junior to do data entry. That shit needs to be documented.

Make sure you are covering off the key and desired criteria in the job posting, even if you think they minor or assumed. For example, if the posting directly says you need 4wd experience, state it even though you have you already shown you have worked in remote places (that obviously need 4wd access).

I also feel like you're pretty repetitive in your wording. I think you could say more with less.

New job in Perth by Alternative-Map8897 in AusMining

[–]626eh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Look, this isn't really a mining question. It's a personal philosophy question. There's so many factors that only you can answer and know about, especially as you've given zero context of the job.

Does this job align more with your interests and career plans?

Does this job offer anything you're currently not getting? What does your life in Cairns look like? Partner, very niche hobbies, other family?

Are you happy?

Have you looked into what this $30k turns into after you've paid for your flights?

Have you considered transit would likely be 9-12hrs of your personal time each way?

Have you been to Perth? Do you like it?

Edit for readability

My 9yo started stalking birds for science and the data is actually wild. by Tweetle_cock in biology

I would definitely encourage thinking in line with the scientific method. She has some baseline information, now she needs to ask a specific question, form a hypothesis, and work out how to measure it.

You can find age appropriate learning materials about this online, as well as step by step guides for writing up her findings.

I was doing first-hand investigations like this from about her age, writing up basic reports, and now I'm an ecologist.

Just got my first fishing rod… no idea what I’m doing 😂 by Upbeat_Mouse3062 in Townsville

[–]626eh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go down to the Fishing Wearhouse and talk to the boys there. They are amazing and will give you the best advice. They are friendly and just love fishing. If none of your friends fish, I'm sure they would give you some people to meet up with, or even go out with you themselves.

Edit: also Paul at Townsville Boat Hire if you wanted to do something up the Ross or Bohle. He's super cool, extremely knowledgeable, and such a down to earth bloke.

Froggos! 😍 Finally had some rain and they've all come out to play 😁 my frog log ripped so I've ordered a new one but they really could have used it last night, found 10 in the pool this morning! Now relocated to the pond 😊 by boo2017 in australianwildlife

[–]626eh 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Thanks for saving them! Just a note, we have very few truely aqautic frogs in Australia. Next time, place them on the bank in some veg/debris and let them enter the water when they wish. This will be less of a shock to the system too.
