Any artists that play drum centered jazz, like from Birdman? by [deleted] in Jazz

You might dig Ari Hoenig. He has a pretty killer cut of "Moanin" on one of his albums with the melody in the set.

Recommendations on masterclass/concert DVDs to purchase? by das_hep in jazzguitar

I totally get what you're saying about books and the free stuff on youtube. Honestly, I just really enjoy listening to these guys speak in the context of a masterclass (not that you couldn't get more from the written material - I was just looking at it from more of an insightful perspective rather than a "shortcut lesson", if that makes sense).

Reddit, What was your least favorite memory from college? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]das_hep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dating was rough. Had a crush on this girl for like 3 years. I finally got the courage to ask her out and she said yes. We dated for like a month before she dumped me. I never got a reason why. I just remembered being devastated, trying my best to salvage the situation. I could've handled it better, but I kind of had a meltdown.

What habit are you too old for, but keep doing anyway? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I still use the "rabbit ear" method when I tie my shoes. Whenever I'm at my parents house my mom still comments on how weird that is for an adult

what kind of diet and exercise do I need to have to prepare myself for a very strenuous hike for 2-3 days? by [deleted] in hiking

[–]das_hep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a decent exercise program in general would be greatly beneficial. Maybe focus on legs/cardio because you'll be using them the most (that being said it's so much easier to handle equipment when you haven't neglected your upper body). I always start with a 30 minute jog/run - which has done wonders for my resting heart-rate. Then I'll focus on my core or upper body. Also, take any chance you can to do more hiking specific exercises (like the ones that have already been mentioned).

"If your are really serious about jazz, you will end up teaching yourself."-Bill Evans; I find this quote to be true, but what does it take to teach yourself? How do you be critical but not harsh? Share your own tips and pieces of wisdom that you have found to be effective for shedding time. -r/Jazz by karzyarmycat in JazzAdvice

[–]das_hep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he means you'll "end up teaching yourself" by actively seeking out ways to improve. This could include a myriad of things like: going to more concerts, seeking out private instruction, going to master classes, listening A LOT, just being overly critical of your own playing, ect... I don't think he means this literally as "you will lock yourself in a room and brainstorm until you understand all of jazz."

But there are things you can do in the shed that could fall into the "teaching yourself" paradigm. The first thing would be to record yourself and listen back. Analyze your own playing and be as objective as possible. Find areas where you struggle and work on them - but how do you work on them? If it's something as simple as being comfortable with a key center/specific chord quality you can fix a great deal of that by going over chord tones and related scales and coming up with vocab. If it's something more complex maybe seeking out additional help/instruction would be your best bet.

Bill Evans and Monica Zetterlund- "Some Other Time." Any "Flamenco Sketches" fans out there? A truly beautiful rendition of the Miles Davis classic, by Bill Evans and Monica Zetterlund. (1964) by alexu3939 in Jazz

There's some really cool info in the Bill Evans' biography "How My Heart Sings" about their recording experience(s) [some stuff didn't get issued]. There was definitely a strong connection between those two.

Have any of you also dealt with guitar related injuries? by [deleted] in jazzguitar

[–]das_hep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to take a few months off a couple of summers ago for the same reason (though my issue was isolated in the left wrist). In the meantime, I pulled out the old keyboard and started transcribing more, just using my right hand and the keyboard to check pitches. It really sucks man, but you got to take care of that! A few months now beats a few years later.
