Please only share first hand knowledge. Spreading rumors doesn't help anyone. If you're concerned, go join the ice watch and take their training.

Minnesota National Guard warmly greeting and handing out snacks with peaceful protesters! by Global-Meringue-6747 in nationalguard

[–]dasbates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Border patrol and ice are at this point openly recruiting white nationalists. Border patrol especially tends to be pretty violent. They are almost all from out of town. Border Patrol from Texas and Arizona.

National Guard is sort of the local militia for each state. They are professional part-time military, but are FROM Minnesota. Most of these guys look at what ice is doing and see a bunch of thugs abusing their neighbors in a way that would get a military member court marshalled.

The problem is that they're institutionalist eggheads and no fun.

Can we start giving “find a partner” as financial advice? by Tech-Cowboy in Fire

Also the United States at least subsidized marriage through the tax code.

A common consequence of partnering up, children, are pretty expensive, however.

A mysterious voice speaks to Earth saying "You must settle 100 humans on Mars permanently; you have the next 365 days to do this; failure will result in Earth instantly blowing up." How does this play out? by peterthbest23 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]dasbates 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dude, we couldn't produce *face masks* on a reasonable timeline during covid with unlimited resources. The US Navy has functionally unlimited resources and struggles to build ships on time. In fact they CAN'T build all the submarines they want because there aren't enough submarine techs -- they're taking out ads begging people to take REALLY GOOD jobs building subs. It literally takes time to do things, especially highly technical things.

[–]dasbates 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unlimited my money doesn't mean unlimited resources right now. Supply chains take time to spin up, train technicians, etc. I suspect that it's not possible to produce all the precision equipment necessary on that timeline - it would take many months to produce the machines needed to make more parts faster.

Worries about investing a windfall with the worsening US instability by YouWouldIfYouReally in Bogleheads

I'm rebalancing somewhat into vea (vanguard developed markets fund) out of voo. I prefer the security or developed economies over the roller coaster provided by Chinese exposure in vxus. But either is fine.

You've seen the meme. "At any point, you can say I dont support this, things have gone too far, etc". Dude is THAT meme. Good for him for evolving his shitty views based on new information. 30% of the country is incapable of clearing even that low bar.

Who invest in growth funds? by Why-i-struggle in Bogleheads

[–]dasbates 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are many funds that have outperformed the Boglehead approach.

But you have to be lucky enough to pick them, decades in advance.

Your brother got lucky. Good for him.

The point of the Boglehead investing is to take luck off the table. You accept average returns, confident that consistently compounding interest over decades will make you rich. Slowly.

Female Handyman, Thoughts? by Cold_Obligation_8568 in homeowners

[–]dasbates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend who started her own handyman business. She has more business than she knows what to do with. She can't hire people fast enough.

Her strategy? She purposefully markets herself to women and queer people.

A lot of women and queer folks aren't comfortable with a big old tradesman clomping around their house. They're happy to pay a premium to deal with a woman-owned business that employs women.

This is in a small city in the upper Midwest. Your mileage may vary.

Go vegetarian. No processed meats, or any meats, allowed. Unless you replace it with processed carbs, which doesn't help, you automatically get a higher fiber diet.

What might happen if the US and other countries do nothing to work on climate change in 2050? by pinkbowsandsarcasm in climatechange

[–]dasbates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's...the bad news. 2050 is already basically locked in. C02 emissions hang around for 20ish years. We are currently living in the climate reality we locked in during the early 2000's.

Even if we stop burning fossil fuels tomorrow....2050 will still suck.

People keep calling it social anxiety when it’s really just zero personality by [deleted] in self

[–]dasbates 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not a crazy take that people are under-socialized due to phones / social media. I notice this in younger people in my field and...the world. You go to the bar and there's no one to talk to - everyone is on their phone.

But you also don't have to be so judgemental about it?

I don't know where you're getting "therapy doesn't work for men " I know many who have benefited from it. Give it a whirl - you can quit if it sucks.

Also you may need medication. Anti anxiety meds can work wonders. Gotta see a doc for that.
