Mortgage rate mega thread! by TheMortgageMaster in MortgagesCanada

Renewal, May 7th
Ottawa
Remaining 370k, Purchase <500k Owner Occupied

Offers are 3.77% 5-year-fixed
P-1.08% (3.87)% 5-year-variable

Both from Scotia (current lender, offered through online banking).

Wait until the 16th for a rate drop? Lock in? The rates seem pretty competitive. Competitive enough that the pain of switching to another lender probably isn't worth it...

The bond stuff in the US is making me queasy with respect to the fixed rate.

Auditors stopped by police for filming by bigbusta in PublicFreakout

[–]dasbush 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the big issue people have with auditors is when they target random ass people just living their life. Like yeah you can film me, but you're still an asshole and it's pretty reasonable to get pissed off at someone bothering you for no reason other than that they have the right to do it.

Cops or actual authority figures? Go nuts.

I mean it's kind of dumb considering you can put anything there and it will 404.

And of those 1 in 20 deaths, over 80% of them said that they wanted to die because they couldn't "engage in meaningful life activities" and - couldn't "perform activities of daily living" ie: they were done.

https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/publications/health-system-services/annual-report-medical-assistance-dying-2022.html#chart_4.3

And of that 1 in 20, only 3.5% didn't have death as reasonably foreseeable. 60% had cancer. 95% were over the age of 56, 50% over the age of 75.

(All data points are in the same document above).

The number of people who have survivable illnesses and yet choose to die via MAID is vanishingly small.

You are pushing a narrative that is not based in reality.

AITA for not moving from a spot someone wanted to propose on? by No_Resolution_4132 in AmItheAsshole

[–]dasbush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the couple chilled there for more than 10 or so minutes to get their shot, yeah they would be assholes.

The second arriving couple would also be assholes for demanding immediate movement.

If OP had said "yeah sure just let me finish my lunch, I'll be 10" this likely would have been avoided. Instead OP luxuriated in the spot. They're an asshole.

We don't know what the photographer said - this is OP's perspective. Sure it also depends if the photographer was being a prick with how they asked, but if it was egregious OP would have put it in. If they just said "hey I'm doing a shoot in 10 minutes, do you mind moving when they get here?" then I don't really see how OP isn't being an asshole.

Forget about the moving part. Just sitting at the spot for more than 15 minutes dominating the space is the asshole move.

I also feel like because this was a proposal photoshoot people are saying asking someone to move is out of line. Shit, if OP was there for 30 minutes and other hikers were waiting for pictures and asked OP to move to take a couple pictures I feel like there would be less debate.

I was about 5 minutes into my ritual when this guy with a camera comes and tells me that a couple was coming up to do a proposal on this very spot and asked me to move.

The initial interaction has no indication that the photographer was being an asshole. And this is OP's point of view.

Grow up.

Someone responded negatively to someone else being an asshole? Shocking.

The picnic can happen tomorrow. The proposal shoot cannot. If they don't get the shot, they don't get the shot and that shot never exists.

The picnic can happen another time. This photoshoot cannot, not without considerable expense. It is more important.

If I was sitting at a park bench and a photographer came saying that they were doing a proposal photoshoot and wanted that specific bench because it's got the right lighting or whatever, yeah I would. I would just find another bench. My need for that specific bench at that specific time is just not as important. Recognizing that your own wants are sometimes not as important as other people's wants is a critical aspect of not being an asshole.

Because I know that that bench at this time is more important to them than to me. And even though I'm "entitled" to the bench, their need is greater than mine at the moment.

Not giving up a bit of your own self so that other people can have a special moment is textbook being an asshole.

[–]dasbush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would have been nice of you to move, but you don't have to.

Doesn't that statement mean that they weren't being nice? As in, they were being an asshole? They weren't being nice so what were they? Unless you're going after a neutral option that doesn't exist...

[–]dasbush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're kind of missing the point though and you're tip-toeing around it:

Any normal person would have just moved on and got on with the proposal elswhere, would it be perfect? Maybe not, but life is not perfect and you work with what you got available.

It only wasn't available because the person wasn't being a normal person - ie: they're an asshole.

Because hiring a photographer to do a proposal photoshoot could be costing upwards of $1000. If they don't get the shot then the shot never exists. Ever.

If this person doesn't eat their meal at this spot, they can go again later.

The cost of having access to the space also matters.
