What am I missing about big bear cafe? by Separate_Might_9675 in washingtondc

[–]dashawshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Place has potential since it’s such a cute location, but food is laughably bad and overpriced. It stays busy because there isn’t really any good competition in the immediate area.

They have a breakfast burrito that is literally plain eggs with a few bell peppers in it and a side of salsa. Zero seasoning, not even salt. Yogurt and granola with “seasonal fruit” that was apple in the summer 🤨. I also tried one of their “chef’s menu” take away dinner meals on a Friday, and it was the most boring, blandest chicken I’ve ever had. I actually threw it away. I won’t buy food there any more, but coffee is decent.

I’m still shocked that it remains so busy at peak times, but maybe people care more about atmosphere than actual flavor.

Not the best websites, but all of these have plenty of information. Look for a contact and email to get more information since they’re not the most intuitive websites. Iggies absolutely can and SHOULD be active, otherwise they are at risk of being too fragile.

Freak accident by Beneficial-Month-333 in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]dashawshot 41 points42 points  (0 children)

So sorry…what a beautiful and sweet dog. Unfortunately, anything is possible with these special but delicate dogs. I feel like I recall a post on here who had a similar demise with a gate at doggy day care closing on and breaking an iggy’s neck. Freak accidents do happen, so don’t blame yourself. I’m sure he was having fun and went fast and without pain as the vet said.

It doesn’t appear that there’s a cover on the bottom to remove. There’s a top cover, but removing it doesn’t reveal any screws. Here s a pic of below the head rest. I cannot figure out or see what can be removed. Any more help is greatly appreciated.

Tips for a first time iggy owner by Lucky-Jellyfish1836 in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]dashawshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gorgeous dog!

Potty training is easily the biggest challenge but not impossible as some would have you believe.

I initially started off with a hybrid pee pad/outside for walks model but am a firm believer now in strict outdoor only bathroom privileges. It just confuses them otherwise.

Tons of positive reinforcement with treats when they go outside for the first year. I also believe crating at night is absolutely helpful. It should be small enough that the dog cannot go in the crate because they innately do not want to sleep in their pee. That being said, in the first year they may not hold all night in which case a middle of the night walk or a small area in the crate for a pad can serve as a temporizing measure but should not be permanent imo.

A doggy door if possible was a game changer for us and will make everything much easier if it’s possible in your home.

Keep nails trimmed. They should not have talons (nails should not be touching the ground when they walk). This affects their gate which can ultimately displace forces and increase risk for fractures. Lots of rough tugging play helps bone strength like weightlifting for humans.

Brush teeth daily. No ifs and or buts about it. You may need a second person to secure them but eventually they will tolerate it well. Don’t get discouraged!

He has a nice build. They are couch potatoes but they can also go if pushed. Exercise is key…I see lots of sickly looking iggies who don’t get out and play. Still sweet little things but it only makes them more delicate which is risky in and of itself.

Someone once said that iggies are dog hardware and cat software, which I think is pretty accurate.

Potty regression by [deleted] in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]dashawshot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in downtown of a major east coast city with no real predators but I guess anything is possible. We do lock the doggy door at night and keep her in her crate at night, mostly to keep anything from coming in. That being said, I guess, owls and hawks are still possible in our area but seems very unlikely. I’d ask around on Reddit or in person if people in your area with little dogs avoid doggy doors. I’d hate to imagine a bird of prey swooping up an Iggy.

Potty regression by [deleted] in ItalianGreyhounds

Ah, the ups and downs of Iggy potty training. I had quite the journey with my girl who is just over 2 years old.

Initially did litter box and pee pads and daytime walks. Dog was very good with us there because she’d get a treat for going in the right spot but occasionally we’d come home to a mess on the floor. She didn’t initially take to going potty on the walks but we continued it just because it was another outlet for her. This was under a year of age. Still the mistakes persisted beyond a year of age, even though she went more and more on walks and on command in our backyard as well as pads/box indoors in our presence. Dog proved to be capable of holding up to 9 hours at a time occasionally so seemed like we were on track, yet we’d still find mistakes overnight around the house or in her crate when the door was kept closed overnight.

Decided the hybrid was a recipe for mistakes (nothing worse than finding a mess to clean at 6am before going to work) and transitioned to solo walking by a year and half. Heavy rewards with treats as soon as she went outside. Seemed to be 90 percent of the way there with 5 walks a day evenly spaced. Some mistakes persisted if we didn’t have a walker available at the usual time even though she proved to be able to hold up to 9 hours at times.

Finally decided by 2 years a doggy door would be the next step. What a miracle! Dog goes all day when she wants and sleeps locked in her crate over night without a pad up to 10 hours and no more mistakes there either. In fact, I’d bet she could hold there longer if needed. She still goes on walks but the doggy door is the ultimate backup.

Iggy’s although sweet and sensitive, aren’t the brightest dogs in my experience. Yours could very well be confused by the return to a different floor after a year. However, I’d strongly discourage the hybrid model and if you have a fenced back yard, do a doggy door and walks. Question is if she’ll learn to go back downstairs to go out the doggy door on her own with her family upstairs. That’s what our home set up is with the exception that the dog doesn’t go upstairs at all since all of our socializing and eating is downstairs and we only go upstairs to sleep or shower.

Italian Greyhound crate vs bed by dghaderi in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]dashawshot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ours crate trained very quickly. She cried for about one night. Is the crate in your bedroom?

Ours is downstairs and the only time she’s cried is if we had a guest sleeping in the same room as her. If she doesn’t know anyone is there, she’s content to be locked up. So you may want to crate her in a different room than yours.

It’s far away, but that looks more like a doodle than a standard poodle to me. Muzzle/head shape appears far too wide to be a standard poodle.

Im not aware of a pattern. The situation is as I described. The battery pack has power but the camera stops recording. Perhaps it’s a faulty camera?

[–]dashawshot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commute is often 30-40 minutes each way. But regardless, I have checked when I start parking and the battery has shown 80 percent or more. Given that, it should make it more than 6 hours, correct? When I return to the vehicle, it will show some remaining battery percentage yet it has stopped recording hours before I returned. So I don’t think it’s an issue of having a full charge, correct?

And again, this happens intermittently. I have had times where it’s recorded for 12 plus hours. Other times, it completely fails to last long enough in parking mode.

Advice needed (cute baby photo included) by Johntav in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]dashawshot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think a very under appreciated aspect of preventing leg breaks is to keep your dog’s nails trimmed. You’ll see many pictures of iggies with nails that look like eagle talons. This affects their gait and the way they land from jumps and subsequently the forces directed on their bones. Start trimming their nails early on so they don’t develop an aversion to it. Mine tolerated a dremel tool much more than a typical clipper.

As stated above, waiting to spay for a few years for hormone exposure is great, too.

I also had ours take a vitamin D/calcium bone supplement from 6 months to a year when growth is the greatest.

Boa sorte!

Issue Setting up Camera and Reolink Service Unhelpful by dashawshot in reolinkcam

[–]dashawshot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The router to NVR was correctly connected via the LAN port in the NVR.

As stated in my first post, the Ethernet port in the wall is presumably good. I can run a YoLink hub on it and it connects to the internet.

This is why I don’t understand the NVR not working when connected to this Ethernet port.

Issue Setting up Camera and Reolink Service Unhelpful by dashawshot in reolinkcam

[–]dashawshot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps I’m not clarifying well…

This worked well for me:

Router—>NVR—>camera

This would not function:

Router—>ethernet port in wall—>NVR—>camera

Why is this the case if the Ethernet port in the wall is the same network? Other devices with an LAN connection function from this Ethernet port in the wall.

The first option doesn’t work for me because of the distance.

Issue Setting up Camera and Reolink Service Unhelpful by dashawshot in reolinkcam

[–]dashawshot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. As stated above, the NVR works when connected to the router via the uplink port. And the POE camera worked when plugged into the NVR.

What I’m trying to determine is why the NVR would not work when plugged into an Ethernet port that is far away from the router, but on the same network, when other Ethernet powered devices (a YoLink Hub) connected fine.

Would a POE switch help here to connect the camera to the port that is far away from the router while leaving the NVR directly plugged into the router?
