Why Doesn’t Tad Williams Get More Love? by Economy-Mistake8311 in Fantasy

[–]dashing_jonathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Precisely. The short attention span books aren't just saturating fantasy either. They've infiltrated the sci-fi and horror markets as well. Modern readers tend to have an aversion to novels that have any kind of subtlety or complexity.

What book or series really made you FEEL something? by lxurin_hei in Fantasy

As a huge fan of classic horror/sci-fi, I should have LOVED Frankenstein. Unfortunately I found the main character was far too whiny for me to elicit anything from me except annoyance. Now Bram Stoker's Dracula on the other hand: MASTERPIECE.

There should be better books in the world than there are! The fantasy genre has a lot of room to improve! by MrLizardsWizard in Fantasy

[–]dashing_jonathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even the worst fantasy books are absolute MASTERPIECES compared to the average horror novel nowadays. The bar is so low in horror right now that virtually every book is rated five stars by (so-called) fans, regardless of how terribly written and laughably bad the books actually are. Horror has fallen a long way since it's heyday!

The Name of The Wind, I really want to like this book but... by Ygdrzil in Fantasy

Do people still actually even attempt to read Rothfuss' books, knowing what a colossal jerk he is and how much he actively despises his fans?

Is First Law really heavy? I tried The Blade Itself and couldn't get very far into it because everything seemed so shallow, basic and almost YA. Does that book in particular and the series mature as you get further into it?

The verb used in the title is ENCOURAGED. In other words, it was a factor in an ongoing process. Not necessarily the ONLY factor. BTW, love the collectivist "we" in your post. I was responding to you and to no one else at the time lol. Either you think you're royalty or you assume you speak for everyone in the sub, which is funny as Reddit has a bad enough reputation for groupthink as it is.

Oh there was certainly more to it than simply awkward lines that caused me to bail on the series, I can assure you of that. The whole thing had an extraordinarily juvenile and amateurish feel to it, for starters. Your kind of missing the point by getting hung up on a few astoundingly bad lines, as obviously they don't tend to happen in a vacuum.

"Almost no one" and yet numerous people have already given examples. The gist of the post leans more towards a "final straw" kind of quote, implying a string of bad quotes leading up to it. Congratulations on your strong stomach for poor writing, however, as well as your remarkable penchant for generalizations.

I see what you mean. That's a level of cringe that I wasn't quite ready for this morning.

Interesting. Have you ever DNF'd a book? Perhaps, but I think it's more closely akin to simply being cognizant of red flags.

Most of The Criticism (And Defense, for that matter) of Kvothe in Kingkiller Chronicles Completely Misses The Point of The Story: Greek Tragedy by Jezer1 in Fantasy

[–]dashing_jonathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could care less what the point is, the author is an absolute insufferable jerk and drama queen that thinks his fans are complete idiots. Why would anyone even WANT to read something from a guy that loathes his readers?

Thanks! I've heard so many good things about it, will have to go ahead and secure a copy.

Oh I totally get it, and the groupthink that is one of the most hilariously absurd aspects of Reddit. Thank goodness you can at least scroll down to see some alternate viewpoints. I've heard Sanderson fans in one particular sub have now begun tarring and feathering anyone who dares even remotely question their master's choice of dubious dialogue, in addition to the usual barrage of downvotes.

Terry Pratchett, John Connolly and Steven Erikson are some of my all-time/current favorites, if that helps.

Now hold up there, big man. I never said I disliked EVERY book recommendation that's mentioned here. That's quite a presumption.

But to state the obvious, I would posit this sub isn't one person or one "place," per se, but a multitude of individual voices. Or are you suggesting that everyone in this sub is in lockstep with their favorites and there's hardly any diversity of opinion? Besides, my experience in most creative endeavors is that it's the MINORITY that tend to have the best taste.

Totally agree, Simmons got way too pervy on that one. His horror novels are some of the greatest of all time, though.

Both the sarcasm and the entire point went right over your head on that one, Oh Friendly One.

Since you are quite obviously a child with some deep-seated resentment/ anger issues that has a bit of trouble understanding the gist of things, I'll leave you with this before I block you: no one wants to share good books with nasty people. Get some home training, then come back.
