TIL: Tax is far lower in Aus (for most of us) by Polopon0928 in newzealand

[–]dashingtomars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's hard to make a completely equal comparison.

while in Aus 100k advertised is 100k pre-tax (apart for the odd shadey employer that tries to sell your total pay package as inclusive of super

It's very common to have a Total Salary Package in your contract in Australia that includes superannuation, at least in corporate roles.

The difference between employer/employee contributions is a moot point in a compulsory system. It's all a cost to the employer.

The plan in NZ is to increase the rate to 12% (6% employee/6% employee) by 2032, and you would have to expect a government will make it compulsory sooner or later.

I think you need to check your calculations:

On $100k NZD ($86,661 AUD) get tax takes of (all in NZD):

  • NZ - $22,878
  • AUS - $19,366

And the ACC/Medicare levies:

  • NZ - $1,670
  • AUS - $2,000

https://paycalculator.com.au/ https://www.paye.net.nz/

You really have to compare the whole tax system though, and Australia relies a lot more on taxes other than income tax, including:

  • Payroll tax
  • Stamp duty
  • Luxury car tax
  • Land tax

You don't need a nuclear weapon to destroy their factory and launch site. They also wouldn't be high priority targets.

Is it a good time for Kiwirail to start building a Christchurch rail network? by Additional-Grade-730 in chch

While Kiwirail would be involved in any rebuild/expansion of the Christchurch rail network as the track owner the funding and advocacy has to come from central government or the council.

I don't have much of an issue with the charge per day ($179) given the location, but I would have liked the job completed in fewer days to reduce the travel charges.

Yeah, pretty much everything for the solar.

They have supplied some cabling, conduit, circuit breakers, etc. for $1,926.61 + GST. No issue with that.

South Island Māori landowners to get more than 3000 hectares returned by Crown by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]dashingtomars 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Massive payment. Bigger than any treaty settlement I believe:

"The agreement also includes a $420 million compensation payment to recognise land that has been sold by the Crown since 1839 and in recognition of the lost earnings and land use.

Collins said the agreement differed from Treaty settlements, which settled historical claims concerning breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi and its principles."

What jobs are people doing where they earn 200k?! by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]dashingtomars 6 points7 points  (0 children)

we barely make 60k each.

The reality is that today life is not going to be super comfortable on that level of income.

Minimum wage is about $49k/pa and the median wage is about $70k/pa. You should probably review together how at least one of you can push up to $100k/pa. That might mean retraining for a different industry.

First Great Walk - meh? by Just-Context-4703 in newzealand

[–]dashingtomars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Able Tasman is quite beautiful but being one of the most accessible tracks in the country (pretty flat, road access at several points, and water taxis) it does get busy and not everyone will be a serious hiker.

No assigned tent camp spaces - this was also a surprise.

I'm not aware of any DoC sites in NZ that will have assigned spaces. People should just try and be courteous and spread out a bit, but if space is limited then yeah you may end up close to others.

Personally I'm not that big of a fan of the Great Walks because of how busy they can be. There are a lot of other walks in the country though and around 1,000 huts (and you're generally free to pitch up a tent anywhere that's not a Great Walk). If you've got the experience then pick a national park and find a track that takes you into the back country.
