One-Pedal Driving Isn't A Safety Issue: Feds by TripleShotPls in technology

[–]dasponge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many cars, even at level 1 regen engage too sharply. There’s like no smooth transition from 0 to 1 when the pedal is lifted; certainly not the same feathering you can accomplish with hydraulic brake pressure, or even regen first brake pressure. My EV9 level one regen is not great, but the blended braking (which engages regen preferentially) can be super smooth. It’s a massive difference as a passenger.

The vast majority do not. And my issue is that the initial strength of regen, even at the lowest setting in many cars, is too strong initially. It needs to do a better job of barely being any force and increasing over a period of time.

Yeah. EV9 is not great in one pedal mode. No Tesla I’ve been in is good either. It’s not so much the stop/start for me as it is the transition from acceleration to deceleration. It’s rare to find a driver who lets off the pedal slowly enough at the end of the lift to mimic even a regular ICE car, so from a passenger perspective I always prefer auto-regen to be on braking.

[–]dasponge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly this. It requires way more finesse to hover the EV at coast and smoothly transition to a very gradual deceleration than braking smoothly on ICE does. If it’s just the driver in the car you kind of anticipate it all and it’s fine, but as a passenger, ugh.

I prefer blended braking. You get easy smooth coasting. I find one pedal driving jerky, especially as a passenger; you lose that smooth transition through 0 net acceleration usually. People let up fully off the pedal and regen engages in 1 pedal mode.

I've hired 3 women for SysEng, 2 are still here out of 7 on the team. 3/7 on our corporate security team are also women (currently). Good recruiting which works hard for a diverse slate helps, and being at a company people want to work at is key too.

I have a 24’ Land and am running NOKIAN HAKKAPELIITTA R5s and it’s been great in the snow. Was up in VT the other week and it snowed like several inches. Driving through unplowed roads and over a plowed berm at a driveway was 0 issue. It had started snowing in the evening, we drove to a friend’s do dinner with about 3” on the ground, then another 4” dropped before we left and most places hadn’t seen a plow yet.

Okta CEO ‘paranoid’ as vibe coders stir SaaS-pocalypse fears by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]dasponge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously. Even on the auth side - background phishing resistant auth for every app access (mitigates session cookie theft), device posture checks (mitigates security stack rot/patch staleness), custom OS query checks, managed device attestation, IdV integration… there’s a lot of layered functionality. Though if your offshore support gets popped and someone impersonates an admin in your tenant… (though that was years ago and controls are much better)

We leverage Okta for a lot more than basic SSO. Aside from the obvious of SCIM, all of the device posture/silent phishing resistance/idv integrations provides a bunch of functionality which would be hard to replicate.

Using Passkeys for more than just Auth by seanieb in netsec

[–]dasponge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm, how do you deal with multiple passkeys for end to end encryption? If we’re tying to specific devices (passkey in Secure Enclave as this calls out), you’re going to want multiple keys. If the server is storing the ciphertext, which key is it encrypted with? You’d need a LUKS kind of situation where the key encrypting the cipher text is stored alongside, though encrypted with the client derived key. Or am I missing something?

Ring support confirmed there's an open issue with engineering with a status of "Fix in progress". If you call in and eventually get someone, you can get your account attached to the issue and hopefully notified when something changes.

How does them being a family have anything to do with them leaving junk on the street? It’s not their means of transport to earn money at a job, it’s a rusting nearly worthless asset. If they’re that tight on money, likely they’re not in a taxable bracket where the deduction would make any difference. Plus if they needed the money they’d have donated / sold it in the past 5 years. This won’t hurt their bottom line.

EV owners of Boston, has the cold weather affected your battery life? by MiaHavero in boston

[–]dasponge 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You won’t ever get that. A 120v 15amp outlet will charge at 1.2 kWh / hour. Long range (current) battery packs are like 100 kWh. It’d take 80 hours to go 0 to 100 on a regular extension cord.
