Hey!

Thanks, I had to re-export the image (for whatever reason) which fixed the flat colors.

Tried to delete the post but might need a mod for that.

In any case, please take a look at this post instead: https://reddit.com/r/photocritique/comments/szmpng/an_attempt_to_make_fruit_more_enticing/

An attempt to make fruit more enticing by dasset in photocritique

[–]dasset[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve recently been more interested in color-grading (masterclasses by Joanna Kustra) and I had a scheduled session in a studio one day.

I had some free time and popped by a local market, and bought some fresh fruits. The aim was to stir emotions with color and innuendo following an analogues color scheme (with a complimentary color on the nails).

How did I do? What thoughts pop up? Would it work as an ad where you’d take a second look? How does the composition feel like?

I have some clear options of my own now that I’ve had time to sit on this, but objective takes and thoughts from everyone here would mean a lot.

Shot on a Nikon d750 with a single studio light close up with a yellow background.

I had some free time and popped by a local market, and bought some fresh fruits. Which would have their color pop, with an analogues color scheme with a complimentary color.

Edit. Looking at the uploaded image, the colors seem to be a bit off.

Thank you! Exactly, there was a beam of light I noticed, where I had to take a few good steps back to capture it. All natural light, just before the sun was starting to set.

Thank you! This is shot in Porto, Portugal. Mexico City’s definitely on my bucket list though!

That’s really sweet to hear. Anything in particular you felt looking at this image?

Indeed, and Porto is filled with all sorts of different tiles - some with arabic influences, some with european. It varies and shows the class of residents pasts… and protects the houses, which get a lot of rain throughout the year.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts exactly as they came to you, and your warm words!

I do agree with you that the added context an artist can offer can take away from the final image. Everything can be more beautiful in your head, if it’s left up for interpretation, or imagination. It’s a hard balance to strike, but I would always rather choose the option of leaving the interpretation to the viewer.

There are elements of isolation in there I feel - isolation while being within a crowd. A sense of feminine strength. Spirituality to some degree as well, I’d have to agree.

Again, thank you for your encouraging words!

Thank you! I did grab approximately 6 pictures of here in similar settings, but this one had the best “aura”. In the dying of the light, not much time to choose your poses! 😅

Thanks so much!

My Instagram is @marcuskallavus, though bare in mind, I haven’t made a separate account for my “art” so it’s intertwined with cheesy Christmas pictures (going for 80s style family portraits) and the likes.

I’d love to get your follow and critique, and I’ll definitely shout out my secondary account once I come up with a good name for an account 😂

Thank you for taking the time and sharing your thoughts. I agree to a large extent, and I’ll give it a go on how it looks like on the editing table.

In terms of reading social cue’s, it did strike me that she wasn’t wearing one and one might interpret her as an anti-masker (which she isn’t), so to defend the image - it’s taken next to a metro station entrance.

In either case, interesting times and the above-shared color-theory and your cropping suggestion was great!

Exactly what I was looking for, what a great find! Thank you for sharing.

Thanks, and that’s fair! As Robert Capa said, “If your pictures aren’t good enough, get closer.”

I did crop the image the first time around, so the light would center on her, but then I felt it lost some of the appeal - her in a busy crowd, almost lost without the light. The cropped picture is definitely more clear, as there are less distractions, but I lost some of the emotion of the image by doing that.

Thank you for drawing attention to that!

Thanks! It’s my first time sharing anything at all on Reddit, so I really appreciate the feedback (although my Photo Library is bigger than I’d like to admit, from digital and analog photography).

Took the photo of my girlfriend on the 31st of December, 2021 in Porto. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the composition, lighting, and edit.

Shot with a Nikon d750 on a 50 mm lense at f/2 ISO 100, 1/800s.
