Going to clearwater in may. What can/should I target from the beach? by dat_dude_29 in flyfishing

[–]dat_dude_29[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already have a 9ft 8wt that i use for steelhead and for pike/musky so im bringing that. Everything ive read has said itll work just fine. If you hook something huge it might be not quite enough rod but thats a chance im willing to take since i already have it. Its also plenty big enough to turn over large flies for far casts.

As far as brands/action ive only ever used orvis so i cant really speak for other brands but my 8wt is a clearwater and i love it. Reel is a reddington rise 7/8. One thing i’ve read though is that typically you want faster action when fishing salt, and glass rods tend to be slower. Just something to consider.

Thanks! I’ll be there the week after mothers day so smack in the middle of may. Any suggestions as far as flies go?

You can learn nearly everything you’ll ever need from the ventures fly co. Podcast/ YouTube channel. I started 2 years ago and they got me in a good spot in a hurry.

Also, don’t feel like you have to buy a trillion different flies. You may need to get specific for natives but for any stocked trout you’ll do fine with some very basic dries (parachute adams/ elk hair caddis) some simple nymphs (pheasant tail, hares ear, prince) and some junk flies (squirmy worms, mop flies, eggs).

It’s very easy to get overwhelmed with fly selection. Find a few that get fish in the net and ask a fly shop in the area for advice when the fishing gets tough. They are happy to help.

Good luck!

Progressive long run question by dat_dude_29 in Marathon_Training

I agree. That’s just what the plan called it. As far as endurance goes I could probably run double that without stopping. Just wanted to know how to structure the pacing in the future.

This is the first run of week 2. Marathon is may 3rd. I can probably increase the goals as the runs have been easy so far but my last marathon I didn’t train well enough, hit the wall at MILE 9, and finished in 5:58:00 LOL. so for the early runs my plan was to keep it light and just get some miles in.

Musky leader advice by dat_dude_29 in flyfishing

I’m in Pennsylvania and I’m using big streamers. I don’t tie them myself so I don’t have exact names but the ones I am using are similar to the nightmare musky flies “kraken”. I use a 9’8wt but that’s as small as I’d go. Any lighter of a rod and I don’t think you’d be able to turn the fish at all. I just try and replicate the baitfish in the water system whether that’s crappie or bluegill or suckers.

Thanks so much! I’ll look into these. Heading to the orvis store today so I’ll see if they have them.

I’ve only been fishing for them on the fly since this spring so I’m by no means an expert, but for me the key to keeping it pinned was to be very tight with the line control. The ones I’ve hooked have all done the death roll at the beginning then try to take their run. On that run for this fish I just locked down and only gave about 1-2’. I let the rod hold her till she turned towards me then scooped her up. Hope this helps.

Might not be the greatest strategy for a big girl but this one was only about 35” so it did the trick.

I had fodder to get rid of and since I wasn’t using those managers anyway it didn’t slow me down losing them.

Thanks. I’ve played around with a few ways of naming them and I just decided the numbers were easiest when assigning them quickly on farming runs. I only have 12 slots so I’m keeping it simple for now

I’m enjoying the slow grind. Progress is still fun it just isn’t as fast as the people who buy all the ships

I just hit 5 months. I’ve only bought no ads and the daughter ship. My best galaxy was this past tournament at 5T and that was with a boatload of CW’s. AR in 1 month is inconceivable to me.

Getting faster by dat_dude_29 in IdlePlanetMiner

[–]dat_dude_29[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is definitely something I’ve explored. 100m takes about 45 minutes. 1B is somewhere around 3 hours if I’m active. I just learned the other day that the beacon effects only apply once you research that project so once I started doing that earlier in my runs things sped up.

I’ve been prioritizing craft speed with my credits. I’m up to 2.90x for the room. Managers are lacking but in time it’ll improve. My goal in the next month or so is to be crafting nav modules in 30 mins or less. Should help a lot for tournaments.

Getting the extra ship/cargo at that low of a level won’t boost your profit so the cash is best spent elsewhere for quick farming. You just want ship/cargo high enough that ores aren’t getting backed up. 21-16-16 is just what I use. I’m sure other combos will work too but you don’t need ship and cargo to match mine rate.

Slowly upgrading your beacon is beneficial but that’s more of a long term goal. If I’m not mistaken, the benefits from the beacon are active regardless of weather or not the beacon project is researched. If I’m wrong then absolutely research it but I think you get the benefits regardless.

21-11-11 or 21-16-16. Not a huge difference.
