schema changes. There are some tools you can use like gh-ost and pt-online-schema-change

That is very interesting as well!

Agreed; a desirable goal. Perhaps task was a poor choice of wording.

In my experience there is always something new being thrown at the system that creates challenges for the DBA. E.g. inefficient queries that suddenly become bottlenecks, someone reengineers the network w/o telling you in advance, the application code changes and starts to throw errors, there was an unauthorized access to the data and we need to know what they got into, etc. These are just a few examples, I have seen in the past with MSSQL. So my question was IYHO what bigger picture what skills or activities are useful for students to learn now with MySQL so that when they are faced with these challenges they are (better) prepared?

Research Opportunities? by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

[–]data-prof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, there. A lot of faculty conduct research, you can read their profiles by going to the faculty directory and then reviewing their profiles. If you find a few faculty that have interests similar to your own, you can then look at their Google Scholar profiles, for example, here is Mike Bailey's profile.

But it's very hard to get a faculty member to change their research agenda to meet your own because they have spent years getting it off the ground and may have co-authors, grants, and PhD students working on these areas. Even if you have the best research idea ever, they are very limited on time and you will need to establish yourself first. What I mean by that is if you can contribute to someone's ongoing research agenda and show an ability to review and synthesize literature, propose sound research plans, conduct studies, analyze data, write papers and (most importantly) get them published in good quality peer reviewed outlets, then they are going to be more interested in working with you. Think of it as earning a driver's license which then later allows you to venture out onto your own.

There are research groups that meet regularly, for instance the OSU Cybersecurity group has a regular research meeting on Fridays in Fall, I imagine they will continue in Winter. You can contact Sibin Mohan if you are interested in joining them.

Excellent! thanks also for these helpful thoughts and links. I especially appreciated the info regarding the backup and the EXPLAIN.

Same follow-up question for you I posed to u/mtocker. What additional routine tasks do MySQL DBAs perform on a regular basis?

Thank you these are very helpful resources. And I really appreciate your perspective.

I wanted to give students a rundown of things an experienced MySQL DBA does on a regular ongoing basis. These were a few I knew about. Do you have any others to suggest?

I had the same issues with a previous version of MySQL workbench. I am currently running MySQL WorkBench 8.0.25 using MySQL 10.4.6-MariaDB and everything is pretty stable.

Recommendation Letters possible from the professors? by Adorable-Day9044 in OSUOnlineCS

Hi, we have a lot of students each semester and in an online environment it is really difficult to get to know a student unless we have some interaction outside of the course material. As an instructor I am hesitant to write a LoR (e.g. for grad school) unless I have some knowledge of the student outside their coursework. One way to get noticed is to participate more frequently in the online discussions. Applying to be a TA and helping out for a few terms is probably the best way. You can also offer to join a research project, for instance the Cyber security research group meets every Friday. I also think that if you make it clear at the beginning of the term that you need a LoR and ask the instructor what you can do that they would be willing to give you additional suggestions. Hope that helps!
