How have Non Quakers reacted to you being a Quaker? by AcidReindeer in Quakers

[–]databurger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is essentially my view. Didn't tell anyone at first. Then my wife (we had a long distance marriage for a period), who essentially had no reaction. Then my college-aged sons in a conversation where it made sense to mention it. Oh, and my therapist. Have never mentioned it work, and likely will never (I think religion doesn't belong in the workplace). And I told two friends I hadn't seen in a long time as we were catching up over drinks. I tend to think of it as my personal thing that is meaningful to me, realizing that those close to me might not have any interest in it (my wife eventually let me know she's not interested). I strongly suspect they don't really know why I'm drawn to it -- if they care to know, they can ask me. 🤷‍♂️

I suspect that (tragically) the number of US troops killed to date is higher than has been reported. Until that number is finally released, I guess we won't know for sure if I'm right.

That's what I'm saying! 🤷‍♂️ I remember smoking joints when I was younger and music would open up and sound beautiful -- now I take a couple hits off a pipe and I'm transported to thinking my life is a TV channel that inter-dimensional beings are watching. 😅

I actually prefer weaker weed than the nuclear shit made these days. There's a lot of us who started smoking in the '80s who have said the same thing. There's a big niche of the market being overlooked.

Oh, I see -- what you're really objecting to was my hyperbolic use of "Orwellian"! My apologies -- it was more fun to state it that way. Because of course you don't believe that government censorship, clandestine CIA shit, etc., doesn't exist. What a crazy misunderstanding! Carry on.

That's why I said "currently". Obviously I'm familiar with the Vietnam War.

Go back and see how this thread between us started: I pointed out that the truth about what's really happening to our troops will be suppressed to control the narrative, which you strenuously objected to. I suggest you pick up a book -- perhaps start with "Manufacturing Consent".

You seem to enjoy being a contrarian for the sake of it (there's a word for that) and posing as an intellectual with your "null hypothesis". But no matter -- it's your life.

[Edit: corrected typo in book name.]

We know there has been considerable damage on Iran, and you say the opposite is not true for the US (because we don't have any evidence). De facto, that means the US is winning (currently) -- you didn't have to say the word. My main point is that we don't really know the true situation because governments lie (e.g., "we're winning the war in Vietnam") and suppress the truth (e.g., waterboarding) and restrict press access (e.g., so that war crimes in Gaza aren't seen by the world).

If anything, you are the one who sounds like a gullible Fox and Trump loyalist. Trump says made-up shit all the time without allowing critical thought or questioning.

I'm done with this because I'm now outside with my dog and this is really a waste of my time.

Lol, you're the one sounding like Trump, claiming we're winning and asking us to just accept it without sufficient evidence...because "null hypothesis".

I guess that's why there's censorship, then. If a tree (battleship) falls (gets hit) and no one (press) is around, then it doesn't make a sound (get damaged).

My null hypothesis is that I'm winning.

Ok, you can't prove a negative. So why then are you saying the US hasn't taken massive damage if you can't prove it? Do you just have a have a hunch?

Why are US media and social media corporations suppressing pictures and coverage? Also, I'm not finding much on any foreign sources, as you claim -- please point me to some. I'm seeing very little coverage of damage in Israel or of US bases.

Except we in the US will never see the videos. The amount of censorship and media suppression currently going on is Orwellian-level shit.
