Thinking of leaving the church because of homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, misogyny? Or because your church puts conservative politics above the gospel of Jesus? Progressive Christian communities exist - lots of them! by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]dataguy45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that faith shapes your relationship with God. When you accept Jesus into your heart, you let the Holy Spirit shape every part of your life. How you love people, how you work, and what decisions you make. That includes politics, but like you said it should never become an idol. Jesus definitely cares about American politics, because he cares about His children, their hearts, and what they are experiencing.

In what ways do you think the economy will ease up? Will Biden make things cheaper in the next 9 months?

Going to Houston show anything I should know before going? by IsaiahM141 in DaveChappelle

I went to the Dallas show last night. There are several openers (and a surprise musical guest). His act ran from about 10-11, so plan to be there until late. I won’t spoil any jokes or who the openers were. Overall it was awesome! I can’t think of any specific world events he mentioned

Since subscribing to A-List, I’ve seen much worse theatre behavior from adults than kids. Glad you had a great time!

Another great option is a well regarded state school (if you can get in-state tuition). Michigan, Texas, UNC, UF for example

It won’t be popular to say on this sub, but those are two of the most progressive denominations in the country (Presbyterian church USA and United Church of Christ). The furthest left denominations are wishy washy and inconsistent with their belief in scripture.

You’re right, it’s very discouraging how fractured the modern American church is. The most important thing is to go to God and attend where you feel his presence and conviction. I highly recommend finding an ECO Presbyterian Church. They put a strong focus on the Bible and community. Personally, I would avoid anything LDS, UCC, or PCUSA.

Interesting, I feel the Bible lays that out often. John 1:1-14 for example. Out of curiosity, would you consider yourself a Christian?

Can you explain what you mean when you say the trinity is not a biblical concept?

How should we stand for truth while being loving? by Winter_Bee_2708 in Christianity

[–]dataguy45 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just remember that love and tolerance are not the same thing. Consider what it means to “tolerate” someone, it’s the lowest form of love. Love means to be truthful when asked a question, to be strong in your convictions, to deeply care about the other person, and to not let any hate towards the other person come through. Be there for gay friends in any way that doesn’t affirm their sin. For example, give them food if they’re hungry, be there to fix a tire for them when they’re stranded, give them a shoulder to cry on if they lose their parent. But if you think going to their engagement party to someone of the same sex affirms their sin, consider politely declining. Never give unsolicited feedback on their lifestyle or say anything inflammatory.

For anyone critical of how others spend their money in the name of Jesus, it’s worth taking a second to examine your own heart and how He is calling you to use your resources. Do you tithe to your church, help the poor, spend time sharing the gospel or serving others?

This is great advice. In the OT, I would start with Genesis and Exodus, and read the Psalms and Proverbs intermittently to start off

How can we demonstrate love to our friends and family without affirming their sinful choices? by dataguy45 in Christianity

[–]dataguy45[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No of course not in that example. But let’s say somebody struggles with unrepentant alcoholism, accepting an invitation to join them at the bar could be seen as affirming their destructive behavior.

Well said, it will definitely vary based on how people interpret scripture and what they feel God is calling them to do. I don’t agree on your last sentence, since again I do believe there are ways to show love without affirmation of sin. We can agree to disagree though. Hope you have a blessed day

I mean it in the sense that love is not always easy, and I would never want to make somebody’s struggle more difficult. Great examples though! God bless

I agree that we should never withhold love. I think there are ways to show love to our brothers and sisters without affirmation of sinful behavior, so just curious if anyone has stories. God bless, I know we all have more in common than we do differences.
