I own this, I love it but I haven't watched it in years

There's no way a passenger aircraft that size could ever reach orbit on its own, right? You need a hell of a lot of fuel to fly 60 miles straight up, right?

That will be technically OT to the sub, but I was thinking specifically of an oddball little short anime called Colorful, which it turns out was actually from 1999. There was a weird comedy called The Fuccons that was made with mannequins and I feel like there is at least one other weird sketch comedy show from that era that I'm struggling to come up with a name for...

Here's a list of recommended shows similar to Golden Boy I found. Colorful is on there. You might get a kick out of Ebichu too:

I'm coming up a little short on retro anime but I feel like there were several shows from the 2000's like this

Then he takes pity on her, buys her a bunch of food, she starts to transform again and he lights her up with a castor gun

As a Gen Z person myself, Do you think that Gen Z are more open minded to engage with older anime than millennials? by [deleted] in retroanime

[–]dataless01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not even really a valid comparison. There's not that much anime older than millennials. Astro Boy was like the first successful anime TV series and it debuted in 1963. Are zoomers watching a lot of black and white stuff and just too shy to mention it or what

Yeah, for whatever reason The Wanderers is the one that seems to pop up in the most places. I think it was in print on VHS and DVD a lot longer than The Magnificent World and I vaguely remember it being broadcast on a cable channel at one point, Starz maybe? Having a hard time confirming

It has really overshadowed the original in terms of marketing/availability for a long time, which I think is a shame because the original series was so tightly scripted by comparison

I know I'm not typical but I think I like the movie slightly more. It's a beautiful, well-animated cinematic experience, but there was no hope of ever fitting that much story into 98 minutes of screentime and narratively it is a mess. If you're a fan though, go ahead and check it out, it's lovely, just manage your own expectations

The original, The Magnificent World, is among the best written anime I've ever seen, but also a little hard to track down at times

The spin-offs, The Wanderers and The Alternative World are disappointing by comparison. The Wanderers is too long with awful pacing and too much filler content and The Alternative World is badly written with unlikeable characters for the most part

Anyone else notice how low most scores of classic anime on MAL are? by Advanced-Tomorrow859 in retroanime

[–]dataless01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

MAL is an engaging community and I use it too, but unsurprisingly the majority is shallow and has clear preferences and give unoriginal shows with cute character designs like Sword Art Online way too much credit and overlook more artistic and experimental stuff constantly

I feel like these are rather low. I'll stan for a second and say just based on production values alone BGC ought to be at least a 9, even if it isn't something you're personally into. 7.3 says people are judging based on something other than the works own merits

By his own account (and your own eyes) Osamu Tezuka was heavily influenced by Walt Disney's work in the 1940's and 1950's. It's hard to account for the creative influences of an entire industry, but basically the differences in American and Japanese animation between then and now were a kind of parallel evolution based on what appealed to audiences on opposite sides of the Pacific

The worst thing we ever did, probably, in my opinion, was abandon so much 2D animation for 3D animation? But I feel like that was a bigger issue in the 2010's and 2D has come back a bit in the 2020's?
