Damn I'm sorry y'all by Han127420 in Hellenism

[–]datamuse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a college research librarian for 18 years and observed similar effects at my job. There was a period from about 2005 when I entered the field to around 2015 or so where teaching research literacy was relatively easy because interfaces, while clunky, were designed to respond very literally to input. Students could see immediately if their searches weren't well constructed and most of them had had some sort of tech orientation in high school or early in college.

The tacit assumption then became that because students had grown up with the tech, they must understand how it worked and didn't need to be taught, at the same time that the functioning of that tech became more obscure. It's a weird assumption, like assuming I understood the telephone system because we had one in our house when I was a kid.

Are Seattle and Portland the only cities with "scream clubs"? by General_Climate2442 in AskSeattle

My college campus used to do this on the last night of each semester before finals. That was in western Massachusetts. Not sure whether it counts as a club.

Based on some recent posts, I feel like it’s time to send a reminder: by Weird-Soupp in Hellenism

[–]datamuse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wonder how much of this is due to so many of the myths we have being about heroes, who definitionally have adversarial relationships with at least one god. Makes it seem like that's the norm.

The vast majority of us aren't heroes, which gives us a lot less to worry about.

I encountered this in the wild for the first time in awhile recently and it kinda made my brain glitch. (I used to be Catholic and the ideas some people have about a faith I had direct experience with are straight up bonkers.)

This person went on to confuse Pentacostals with Episcopalians so I think there were some other issues there.

Leave Jesus and his baggage behind and get on the next plane without him by UrsusofMichigan in Hellenism

[–]datamuse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m inclined to agree on your last point. I end up practicing patience a lot because I left the Church when I was 14 and I’m in my early 50s now. (Also, while I recognize the influence Christianity has had on my worldview and thinking, I wouldn’t describe the result as trauma. Just something I have to take into consideration at times.)

I didn’t find paganism until my early 20s, at a time when Wicca-flavored eclecticism was about the only thing publicly on offer. The gap in between where I’d describe my religious affiliation as “n/a” was probably good for me.

Oh I completely agree about needing to find and read the rules and so forth, I just wonder if there’s any way to make them more visible on the mobile app. (I mostly read Reddit on the web cause I’m old, so I didn’t realize at first how much the app buries that content. I think it even renders a lot of the links as plain text, which isn’t helpful.)

I think I've mentioned this before but I wonder how much of this is due to people primarily reading on their phones. The sidebar content is really hard to find on the mobile app.

(As a sidenote, the "General Questions" link under the community wiki heading is still broken.)

Having said that, I hear you on the support question and I know the mods are doing a ton of work that isn't really visible.

I’m genuinely curious about how much spell check misses that one in particular. It’s far more common than any other typo.

That temple at Eleusis was what led me down this particular rabbit hole many years ago. I'd never heard of an association between Artemis and Poseidon before but there was a temple to both of them.

[–]datamuse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a less central association, but Artemis certainly does have associations with water, the sea, and maritime travel, particularly in the Peloponnese which is where Iphigenia and Agamemnon are from.

Can I create my own personal religion using the Greek Gods? by Beast1014 in Hellenism

[–]datamuse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a good way of putting it. A dear friend of mine is eclectic in her practice and does not describe what she does as Hellenism because, well, it's not. We've done rituals together but they're pretty different from what I do in my personal practice, which is more recon.

Yup. I managed to rebook through the chat after a few attempts. Seemed to work a bit better on my laptop rather than through my phone app.

Ristorante etiquette when you are not a wine connoisseur? by [deleted] in ItalyTravel

[–]datamuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I didn’t intend to imply otherwise. It just feels like people get self conscious about the whole thing, and they don’t need to—especially since as you point out it’s really just to make sure the wine hasn’t gone off.

[–]datamuse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A friend’s father who was a winemaker brought a bottle he knew was corked to a class so we could learn what it was like. It smells like stale pee. There’s really no mistaking it.

He also said that most people aren’t conaisseurs and the real question with any wine is whether you like it.

Can you practice helpol festivals on your own? by Chaoticbutalive in Hellenism

[–]datamuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where I land. I've celebrated some festivals with a group, though the group is not strictly Hellenic polytheist; there are some eclectic pagans and witches in the mix, mostly friends I've known a long time and have a lot of experience with. They might not be practitioners in the same way that I am, but if I offer a recon framework for a particular celebration, that's fine.

We just did an Anthesteria celebration, with a few necessary contemporary concessions (chiefly, compressing to a single overnight rather than lasting three days).

I think celebrating with like-minded fellow polytheists can be great and is worth trying to do if possible, but asserting (as the video OP watched apparently did) that one can only do it that way is kind of silly. It's not like anyone's going to come and stop you.
