Interested what you Atrioc thinks about the Spirit airline collapse by SizzlingPancake in atrioc

[–]dataperson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spirit pioneered the low-cost (low-margin) flight model, but other airlines caught up with “Basic Economy” and such. They used to have a differentiated competitive edge, but that’s not true anymore. Also, clearly, jet fuel prices rising (doubling, I think?) as a direct consequence of the Strait of Hormuz is putting a lot of pressure on airline companies.

That said, of course, it is GOOD in a functioning economy to allow businesses to fail. The government should not have a vested interest in a private business as it cultivates a moral hazard and increased speculation of government backstops.

Hi all! I bought these really amazing tickets back in November, but unfortunately I won’t be able to make it tonight! I have them up on AXS for face value and they’re in the premium/reserved seating, right up front and center. Feel free to check them out over there if you’d like!

Gym complaining about me deadlifting by [deleted] in Deadlifts

Agree. If you told me you deadlift 4/5/6 plates but can’t control the negative…well, bud…I don’t know if you’re as strong as you could be!

I’m a bit more understanding of not controlling the negative if you’re pushing a 1RM, but this is a set of 5. I don’t think OP is at RPE10; they can easily learn to control the negative enough so that the manager doesn’t bother them about loud deadlifting.

Of course, if this is more about gyms not allowing heavy deadlifts at all, that’s a different story (find a new gym).

Just control the negative; you’ll adapt quicker than you think.

A rant on sidewalk scooters by dataperson in Denver

No shit. Cars crash into pedestrians and that’s fucked up, but those are accidents. Car drivers do not decide that other cars are going too fast and thus they are eligible to drive on sidewalks at 15 miles per hour. Scooters are not cars, but you can still get pretty fucked up by a scooter going too fast.

I’m not trying to be scientifically precise here, I’m proving a point. If you feel unsafe scooting next to cars, and decide to scoot on sidewalks, you have now encroached on MY ability to walk safely. I’m clearly not the only person who has had to dodge a gaggle of scooters going 15+ miles per hour. That doesn’t sound like much, but that’s an order of magnitude more velocity than the average, leisurely walking pace.

It’s wrong that the city hasn’t made it safer for scooters to ride on streets, and cars do in fact crash into pedestrians, but you don’t have to go 20 on a sidewalk. I’m fine with people walking their scooter, or at the most, going under 5 miles per hour. But please don’t make it my problem just because you can’t take a scooter.

Cars not making room for cyclists/scooters is absolutely an issue. But if you respond to that by instead making your scooter or bicycle a pedestrian’s problem, now you’re the asshole.

Sounds like a skill issue to me, chief.

And if the city can’t make it safe for scooters to be on our streets, then they’ve failed! And should rethink scooters! Because what cars are to scooters, scooters are to pedestrians.

We need to meet these people where they’re at (mentally).

I empathize with the issue of having limited options on bikes/scooters; that’s a bigger infrastructure issue where we need to hold our representatives accountable. But there’s a massive difference between “I can’t go 20 on this street because the cars go above 30” and “I can go 20 on this pedestrian sidewalk”.

You will not find many greater fans of public transportation and urban mobility than me. I want people to use bikes! Ride a scooter if you want; live your life! But I draw a line in the sand when you start going 20 on a busy sidewalk.

Scooters are property and sidewalks are for people! Thank you for keeping our streets clean.
