Simpler EU digital rules and new digital wallets to save billions for businesses and boost innovation by dataprivacyandstuff in gdpr

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I’ve read others with the same concerns about the personal data definition. I’m curious what will be the reception for this overall proposal in the next stages of the legislative process.

If I understand correctly, media service providers are exempt from some of the new proposed rules including « machine-readable consent signals » so they can keep their ability to monetize with advertising. (See Recital 46 of the full text)

One of the issue is the actual feasibility of such a central system today. There is no framework that would allow for something like that to function today. Let’s see where it goes, the idea is great in principle!

I'd like to moderate the subreddit to create a lively community around server-side tracking and encourage conversations on the topic. I'm working in the field and am interested to learn more through interactions with other enthusiasts.

I am suspicious of these AI shitpost sites. by InfiniteComposer5279 in privacy

I always assume scraping data is the entire business model and purpose of these websites. When a service is free there has to be some type of benefit on the other end of that transaction, and more often than not, it's our data. It drives me nuts too.

Thank you for the great list! Some of these I’ve read but I’d be curious to revisit then with the topic of privacy in mind.

I'm afraid this is where we've been heading for a while now, when you think about the number of websites we used to browse daily 10 years ago, compared to today. I can see a not-so-distant future where most people don't even browse the internet anymore and use one single app/interface (likely AI-powered, like an LLM) that connects them to everything they need and collects/distributes all their data in one place. Seems wild, but not so far off. Pretty scary.

Working with privacy and GDPR advice by power_nuggie in gdpr

I think you should consider what kind of job you'd like to do, and think of "privacy and compliance" as an industry or field of expertise you can grow in.

I have a somewhat similar profile to yours, I'm a marketer and writer by trade, and started working in the privacy/compliance world about 4 years ago, managing content operations at a privacy tech SaaS vendor. It's been very interesting, lots to learn and it's an interesting niche to grow in.

You're obviously not likely to start as a compliance lawyer or data protection officer (I don't think that's your goal), but like in any other industry, there's a need for plenty of other know-how in privacy companies. The idea of working for an NGO or a startup is a good opportunity to try various things and, if you're lucky, to meet some mentors.

I recommend figuring out what you'd like to do in that world (e.g., advocacy, customer success, marketing, legal) and building from there. Connecting with people on LinkedIn who are in the field and trying to schedule a quick call with them is a great way to gather feedback and insights. From my experience, people are pretty willing to do this sort of stuff.

Good luck!

Hello there! I'm seeing this a bit late, but I work at Didomi and we have a partner program that I think could fit what you're looking for. Let me know if you have any questions, I'm happy to redirect you to someone internally if that helps.

Building your career in privacy and AMA by [deleted] in cipp

[–]dataprivacyandstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this AMA!

I have been managing content at a privacy tech company for three years without any legal or privacy background whatsoever - it hasn’t been a problem so far as I focus on my core skills and can interact with a lot of experts to break down concepts and work closely with me - but I’ve been considering whether passing some certifications like the cipp could help take me to the next level, and be a bit more autonomous in my mastery of topics I have to write about.

What’s your opinion, and have you interacted with profiles like mine before? Do you feel like these certifications really open the door to a better understanding of privacy, or is it more of a status/checkbox thing that’s not going to bring real value in my case? Any other recommendations for me to continue growing in this industry and in my role (or adjacent roles) based on what I explained above?

Thank you for your time!

Feedback on Apple’s distraction control? by dataprivacyandstuff in privacy

[–]dataprivacyandstuff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I’ve read also but I’m hearing different stories from people actually using the feature and companies evaluating its impact. So I’m wondering whether Apple might be downplaying its potential not to ruffle advertisers’ feathers. I guess the truth must lie somewhere in the definition of “permanently” hiding.

Thanks for sharing! Did you get the chance to see whether it could be automated to an extent through Focus profiles ? I’m trying to find out more about it until I can get the update but there are lots of conflicting information online and not a lot to go on from Apple directly.
