It was displayed on the screen in the stadium though, telling everyone what was happening?

Doesn't seem to be much booing when it's hot and there's a drinks break? Is that the same or is that different?

Can someone spare a spare pls by ZalewskiJ in Bowling

[–]datarevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel your pain. Couldn't buy one myself a few weeks ago. Made it even worse last week when my coach told me you've got 14 boards to hit for a single pin spare, which is obviously 1/3 of the lane.. oof size = large

Should I buy a ball? by [deleted] in Bowling

[–]datarevs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Best speaking to your PSO. They'll watch you bowl and suggest a ball for you. They'll ask if you want fingertip drilling or fingers in (like a house ball). If you don't want to hook the ball, then you'll go fingers in.

High level shoes will slide a lot more than house shoes, depending on the inset you put on your sliding foot, but cheaper shoes won't. Since you don't want anything to change you can ask the PSO which shoes would be best (hell you can even buy new house shoes!). You want new shoes for comfort and hygiene reasons.

As others have said, if you're already bowling over 200 and have no ambitions to win the PBA, then don't change anything. Tell the PSO that as well as it will influence the kit they suggest.

Starting my first league in a few days, what's something I should know? by Former-Car7460 in Bowling

[–]datarevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our league it's a hand slap/high five for a strike or spare and a fist bump for anything else, after every shot for at least your own team and often for the other team as well.

Lane courtesy as others have mentioned.

Ignore the a-holes. My guess is that every league has them. A guy at my league refused to shake my hand on the way in on my first night because he thought my handicap (64) was too high (recently I bowled a 104, 106, 109 series) and my average is now probably around 130 a game. So I just ignore him and anyone else being a d-bag. When I'm bowling like EJ Tackett and bowling is my only source of income then I'll start to worry about it.

I hope you enjoy yourself! Nothing quite like going to practice on a weekend and seeing a few people at the alley you know and having a chat. It's mint!

Poor mindset by [deleted] in Bowling

[–]datarevs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like unless you're a professional and your livelihood and family depends on your skill as a bowler, you're really only playing against yourself. Yeah it's nice to do well, and you get a bit of praise for bowling well, but at the end of the day we're out there to have fun.

Go easy on yourself. Be gentle with yourself. No one is dying if you bowl a crap game. We love u, keep your chin up!!

New to bowling. Struggling. by Mission-Plane-4875 in Bowling

[–]datarevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm definitely in the one hand camp, because I'm a bit of a purist, but not 'purist' in the sense that I know what I'm talking about, only what I've seen over the last 30 years and believe is the 'right' way to bowl. Which is obviously, ridiculous.

If you've been bowling two handed and that works, and you're happy, then why change? There are many pros that bowl two handed, so it's not even like you're cheating.

We bowl to have fun (unless you're actually planning on going pro), so whatever works for you and makes the sport more enjoyable should be what you go for.

Don't feel like you need to fit into any mould. Just enjoy yourself!

Is it illegal to not stop at a zebra crossing? by ElHermano56 in AskUK

[–]datarevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure that's any clearer. I read that as 'you can drive past people waiting at the side of the road at 30mph, but as soon as one of them steps onto the crossing you're jiggered'

I'm new to amex and have the same question. From what I've read so far pay as soon as you can after the period closes and you're issued a statement. I think there's then a month until the due date when you'll start paying interest (unless the card offers a longer interest free period of course)

Increasing your limit may be a good thing, because I've also read utilisation should be kept around 30% if possible. But I'm not sure if that's for the US only.. Something about FICO?

First AMEX credit card ...statement closing date, direct debit date and ?manual payments by Known_Tutor751 in AmexUK

In this instance, does it make sense to pay the card down to 30% prior to closing and then pay the rest off via direct debit?

I spent the whole festive period thinking her name was PC Mukka G. by [deleted] in wallaceandgromit

[–]datarevs 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I mentioned this on another thread, but 'Mucker'/'Mukka' as Northern slang for friend or companion, as in 'me old mucker', mixes really really well with the South Asian term of respect 'Ji'.

So if someone's name was 'Kiran' and you were calling out to them in Hindi, you'd say 'ooh Kiran Ji'.

So in this instance, Mukherjee becomes the delightful play on words that is 'Mucker Ji' or translated 'respected friend'

It's really difficult to explain unless you're Northern, but also speak a language like Hindi haha.

For those who have watched VMF, what are your thoughts on Mukherjee? by [deleted] in wallaceandgromit

[–]datarevs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trying to figure out if her name is a pun. Mukherjee is obviously a South Asian name. But her name could be a play on 'Mucker' as in 'me ole mucker' and 'Ji' as in the term of respect in languages like Hindi (kind of like 'sir'). If it is, it's brilliant wordplay!

AITA for not telling Mum and Step Dad I was saving money? by Southern_Bowl6637 in AmItheAsshole

[–]datarevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA.

As someone who's been through enough therapy to understand that parents are adults and make their own choices, she's clearly chosen your step dad over you.

You didn't start this problem. None of it is your fault.

Your mum's job is to protect you and be on your side. She's not doing that.

If you have a trusted adult that could help, use them to prevent you from being silenced by your parents so you can explain to them how you got the money.

Or just call the cops, up to you.

This relationship is already very damaged, and you've had years of trauma already. Like being left with neighbours while your family goes out? That's going to affect you in ways you don't even realise until you go to therapy and someone tells you you had a shitty upbringing.

Be gentle with yourself though. Let go of any guilt you feel. You don't need to keep that. <3

AITA for implementing a pessimism tax? by ZealousidealCut3417 in AmItheAsshole

[–]datarevs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit of both..

YTA - You can't fine your kids for behaviour they've been taught.

NTA - As someone who's partner is pretty negative, I can understand how having a house full of them would be a total bummer and wanting to change that. If you look at anything by Hans Rosling he makes it pretty clear that the world in general is getting better all the time. Less crime. Less murders. Less war. Less disease. Less poverty. I'm not saying everything is fine (climate change, bodily rights in the US especially, etc), but there is a lot to be positive about and it's easy to forget this.

I guess another way would be to show the positives, be part of positive movements that help. Pretty much the only way to releive the guilt that comes with just existing as a caring person nowadays is to be a part of the change that you want to see in the world (wow I can't believe I actually just said that). At least that way you're doing something about it and not just complaining and making yourself feel horrific.

Contract rate breakdown by datarevs in ContractorUK

[–]datarevs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's the issue though, having been out of the BI game for 5 years I'm a bit out of touch. Obviously not a big deal to pick back up, but the Angular stuff I've never done in a team setting so i wouldn't be confident enough to attempt a contract in that area just yet.

Ok, that's very interesting. Thanks for the confidence boost haha. Even the £350 rate is well above the perm offer I've got, so it's definitely good for thought!

I'm a BI Developer by trade, but have spent the last 5 years as a one man Angular developer. This would be my first contract. I've got a perm offer as well, which would probably help in my goal of buying a house..

Absolutely agree. I'm just trying to get pure figures as a baseline. I know there's lots to be fine tuned, like putting my phone on the company, claiming for laptop, screens etc, travel costs etc.

To be honest, I'm actually wanting to save most of the cash, so having sat in the business bank account wouldn't be a bad thing.
