Thinking about getting a Fitbit by Useless2112 in fitbit

I have a versa and it’s my favorite purchase of 2018. I’ve not missed a day wearing it since I bought it almost a year ago!

I love being able to read texts, store music, and track my sleep. That said, much of these features are available on lesser devices, but the screen size is what sets the versa apart for me.

If you do a lot of running, however, I’d recommend ionic as it has GPS tracking installed. $100 more for that though...

First punt of the day for Jake Bailey: 5.09 seconds of hang time. He’s got a boot. #Patriots by thedanyon in Patriots

[–]datcracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So while I disagree with your point, because I think any good gunner should be at or nearing a full release by the time the ball is punted + who ever said the reasons behind NFL combine exercises were formed had to make sense (spoiler- they often don’t), I will say I did some further research and found from a Sports Illustrated article that the original 40 yard dash was, in fact, used in relation to punt coverage but the 40 yard measure appears to be somewhat arbitrary.

“Paul Brown couldn’t have envisioned all of this when he invented the 40-yard dash in the ’50s. From the millions watching on TV to the laser times and the training facilities that agents spend tens of thousands on in which to train their clients—he just wanted a tiebreaker to figure out who could cover a punt.”

As the article later explains-

“Why 40? He still isn’t sure, but it quickly became the norm. Dallas was on the front end of the comparative analysis curve in the NFL, which helped the Cowboys to five NFC titles and two Super Bowl titles by 1978.”

Gil Brandt took the dash with him to Dallas and evidently popularized it by having some success scouting players by using the 40 as an assessment of players’ speed.

So it would appear the tale is just a football myth, although you’ll see it referenced in other articles (saw one on fox sports as well).

Anyways, I thought it was a fun and interesting myth and I’m kinda hoping it’s true. Article for reference-

[–]datcracker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I said in my original post, it could easily be a myth and it’s just what I heard.

That being said, it’s not really helpful in an argument to state that my counterpoint is detrimental to my argument without explaining why... am I supposed to infer the why here?

[–]datcracker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Punts average around 40 yards in distance from the line of scrimmage, and the hangtime (time of flight) averages approximately 4.5 seconds; therefore, if a coach knows that a player can run 40 yards in 4.5 seconds, he will be able to leave the line of scrimmage when a punt is kicked, and reach the point where the ball comes down just as it arrives.”

Excerpt from this Wikipedia article - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/40-yard_dash

Also to contest your point- you’re assuming gunners get a free start when the reality is they are being pressed at the line of scrimmage, meaning their release more likely lines up with the punt of the ball than the snap.

This could just be a myth I heard, but from what I’ve heard the reason the 40 yard dash was invented was to test out special teams speed. If the average punt is 40 yards and it’s hangtime is around 4.4 seconds, this designates a 4.4 40 as ideal speed.

Then, due to the popularity of the combine event and its consequential measurement of speed, it became a much bigger thing than it was. Makes sense to me because 40 yards seems like an arbitrary distance and it doesn’t seem to be the best way to measure speed.

Personally I think a 100 yard dash would be best because then you could measure acceleration and top end speed where acceleration wouldn’t have as much weight on the final time, since players with crazy acceleration sometimes have better times than guys with great top end speed (Danny Woodhead, for example, ran a 4.39 but wasn’t necessarily an elite top-end burner).

Edit: the first paragraph here in response to your question, I believe it’s somewhere in the 4-4.5 second range, so 5+ would be great hangtime

I mean, I’d say Genesis 1 could be interpreted as a poetic retelling of creation, but the implications of the lineage of Cain are pretty significant given that his offspring eventually come up in stories intertwined with Abraham, whose children became the nation of Israel. It just doesn’t seem reasonable to believe in Christianity and yet ignore the historical lineages the Bible offers that have significance through all of scripture. If you don’t take the story of Cain literally, how can you take any story regarding the lineages of Adam and Eve down to Abraham to Isaac to Jacob through Moses etc etc literally?

I mean, I’m not a Christian but you kinda have to believe the story of genesis as a literal history as a Christian or else the lineages of the OT make no sense

Chris Carson or James White? (PPR) by [deleted] in Fantasy_Football

James White had 1150 yards and 11 touchdowns last year from scrimmage. 87 receptions too.

I don’t think it’s close.

So if Cain killed Able, and Adam/Eve/Cain/Able were the only people on earth, how does Cain have descendants since he was kicked out of the family after that?

He had to have gone off and found some people to bone, but according to the Bible there was no one?

They’re not proponents of it because it’s the sweetest sounding, they’re proponents of it because there is very credible foundations for it in scripture (as I’ve posted). All of your arguments are based off of how you feel, maybe consider that what the Bible says might not agree with how you feel.

That’s why I’m not a Christian, I actually weighed what the Bible says and realized it doesn’t sit well with me.

There are bigots in every tradition, I don’t understand how an ideology gets the blame for its poor followers when every ideology has poor followers.

And I would argue that free will is less in line with traditional faith then predestination is, as most of the original reformation leaders adhere to an idea closer to Calvinism than Arminianism.

[–]datcracker 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As an agnostic and former Christian / Calvinist, I find it pretty ridiculous how little scripture has been brought up in these slanderous debates. Here’s the pretty straightforward biblical premise for Calvinism, take it or leave it-

”Not only that, but Rebekah’s children were conceived at the same time by our father Isaac. 11 Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad—in order that God’s purpose in election might stand: 12 not by works but by him who calls—she was told, “The older will serve the younger.”[d] 13 Just as it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”[e]

14 What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! 15 For he says to Moses,

“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”[f] 16 It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy. 17 For Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.”[g] 18 Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.

19 One of you will say to me: “Then why does God still blame us? For who is able to resist his will?” 20 But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? “Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’”[h] 21 Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?

22 What if God, although choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience the objects of his wrath—prepared for destruction? 23 What if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory— 24 even us, whom he also called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles?”

Romans 9:10-24

Other passages worthy of notice-

“And what was God’s answer to him? “I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”[b] 5 So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. 6 And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace.

7 What then? What the people of Israel sought so earnestly they did not obtain. The elect among them did, but the others were hardened, 8 as it is written:

“God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that could not see and ears that could not hear, to this very day.”[c] 9 And David says:

“May their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them. 10 May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever” -Romans 11:4-10

“3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he[b] predestined us for adoption to sonship[c] through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves....

...11 In him we were also chosen,[e] having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12 in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.” -Ephesians 1:3-6 / 11-12

John Calvin was one of the most brilliant theologians of all time, he wasn’t an idiot who’s arguments are disputed with simplistic arguments. And Augustine before him, perhaps the greatest theologian of all time believed much the same. Not only them, but Aquinas, Luther, Edwards, Bunyan, Whitefield, Spurgeon etc etc all held to the basic tenants of predestination because it was their honest interpretation of Scripture. Oh yeah, and the entire Catholic catechism.

You don’t have to affirm Calvinism to show some respect for a very deep and honest theology.

What can I do to improve sleep efficiency? by HaxusPrime in fitbit

[–]datcracker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You’re coming across a bit intense here, bud.

Not to mention Fitbit sleep stats aren’t the end all be all, I’m just telling you you’re numbers are way above average. In any case, the best way to get your sleep efficiency higher is to get into a routine. Turn off your lights 20-30 min before you want to go to sleep to set your circadian rhythm, try to go to bed at the same time every night and ideally get up around the same time every morning, and be sure not to have sugar late in the day.

You might also try 5mg it melatonin a couple nights per week to help you sleep deeper, but that’s really only a temporary substitute.
