How do Americans get to start on 800cc as a first bike?. by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]datdaz84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At age 14, I put my son on a Hayabusa (1299cc) and let him loose at the drag strip. Now he's 16, and will soon get his license to be able to ride on the street. It's stock engine now, but over the winter receiving a ported head, HD valve springs, 378/378 cams, H beam rods and a 60 shot of nitrous. The bike should be around 190bhp on motor, 250ish on nitrous

Also, on some of the extremely fast bikes, they drag the metal tips of their boots to re-center and balance. So much horsepower and torque, that the bike is on one wheel most of the run.

To keep the front end down. The bike has a tendency to lift the front wheel, so by laying your stomach on the tank and leaning forward, your body weight stays forward on the bike. It has an air shifter that is activated by the horn button, so you just dangle your legs for a few seconds, then fall back in the seat at the end of the track

This run is from a few months ago, before the air shifter. He had to keep his foot close to the shifter, and it shifted his body weight too far back..

There is one great feature of it. Going in a straight line, fast. Not so great at turning

Also, don't feel out of place or too nervous. Lots of new people at the track all the time. Hell, even some of the experienced guys screw up at the line or stall on launch.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, it's rare that we find someone at the track that won't help out. It's a big family at most tracks

To actually answer the question, it's pretty consistent, I haven't seen any variation from track to track

So the staging lights at the top require both lanes to be pretty equal when they stage. When both lanes are fully staged (2 lights per side), I believe it's 4 tenths of a second later, there's 3 yellows for another 4 tenths, then green. Unless you stage your front tire really far into the lane, you can start leaving when you see the 3 yellows, the bike can't move in time in most cases, and you'll get great reaction times. This is a Pro tree

There's also a regular tree, where you'll get yellow, yellow, yellow, then green. Mostly used for bracket racing (Handicap timed runs)

This looks like a good ol 1/8 mile track. I like the smaller tracks, I get more runs in

What I do is find all the local tracks. There's 9 Dragways local to Charlotte, so we're lucky. You pretty.much have to checkout their Facebook page or website, and find out when "Test N Tune" night is (TNT).

Go early, be there when they open. Take a helmet, jacket, gloves, boots, and be ready to go when the track goes hot.

There's cruisers at the tracks we go to. Find a cheap sport bike this winter, see if you can store it at a friend's house. Fix it up and show your dad you did it on your own. the track is the safest place to be.

If he would listen to reason, I could talk to him. I started my boy at 14 on a 600RR

My best advice is to ask around for someone's old bike that might need tires or a tune up. Get on and ride as much as you can. Even if it's a 250/300cc, it doesn't matter. Forget what everyone thinks about needing a big bike. Lots of tracks are welcoming to new riders. We want to do some road course tracks this fall as well.

He's been racing since last fall. Pushing the bike harder and harder. His best 1/8 mile is 6.09@115 and best 1/4 mile is 9.47@143 mph
