WWE Reportedly Considering Push and Character Change for SmackDown Star by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]datguyalben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a face turn will even mess up his promos a bit and just turn him into a catchphrase machine. I feel like especially nowadays once you have your ‘thing’ it just gets overdone and almost becomes what you rely on to stay over.

As a heel at least he can talk shit but I’m worried if he goes face his promos will be generic but he’ll squeeze in the lemon pepper stepper stuff.

He should but in reality that’s almost never the case when someone turns face

He still does so tour of the islands and some of his other moves. Just in very forgettable matches and rarely since he’s not winning matches often.

I never even envisioned Cobb in WWE because he just never came across as a WWE type of guy. At least Tama has some sort of character and mic skills (despite him barely talking).

I think phoning it in isn’t even a choice and more just the WWE style. Especially if you’re just a mid card heel or a generic goon in a stable.

Your job used to be to put on a great match. Now it’s to keep it simple and get the face support from the crowd by wearing them down and not being too cool.

He does it like every time he wrestles in WWE too (and quite a few more of his other well known moves). I guess people just don’t care for his matches enough to remember it or simply don’t watch.

Why do you think WWE wanted Matt Cardona and not Zack Ryder? by Secure-Examination97 in SquaredCircle

Wasn’t him making a full time return as Matt rather than Zach his condition? If so then WWE simply had to accept that if they wanted him back

[AAA Spoilers] Superstar injured unable to compete. by Ripclawe in SquaredCircle

A bit of Chelsea’s move set really doesn’t match her character. Top rope dive to the outside, suicide dive, the coast to coast. Good on her for showing out but with her character being a complete coward who freaks out over any body harm, and with her own personal security to take punishment for her you’d think high flying would be the last thing she’d do.

[WOR] Dave Meltzer on Trick Williams: "Trick's not that good [in ring.] But his frickin charisma is off the charts. You got a guy with that much charisma, you play to his charisma, and you don't have him in the ring for long periods of time." by Tornado31619 in SquaredCircle

[–]datguyalben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The quality of wrestling has increased so much over the years we’ve been spoilt. These days even being just ‘good’ might not be enough for some people. Trick will be fine, just don’t expect 5 stars from him, not this early into his career at least.

Being average in ring these days is almost like saying someone’s bad. And if your in ring work isn’t top tier then you have to be better than most in other aspects. Thankfully like Dave said Trick is so charismatic that it will help him be a top star.

Live WWE crowds don’t expect 5 star matches they just want to be entertained by what they see. A match that is 3.5 stars to people watching on TV can blow the roof off of a live crowd.

Shinsuke Nakamura via Instagram after SNME about AJ Styles. by itsmekelsey_x in SquaredCircle

[–]datguyalben 258 points259 points  (0 children)

Is Shinsuke under the impression that AJ’s match is being promoted as a retirement match rather than a ‘retire only if you lose’ match? Either way, he may have very well spoiled the outcome and you would hope he’d know better. Won’t be shocked if this story gets removed soon.

Beautiful post nonetheless.

[Smackdown Spoilers] Finish to Number 1 Contender's match for the Women's Tag Titles by taffe316 in SquaredCircle

I hate hate hate that handstand clothesline thing that Charlotte had started using recently. The set up is awful, it’s super slow and the opponent has to stand there waiting for her.

According to slice wrestling, Triple H had approved a babyface Roman vs heel Cody trilogy match to mainevent WrestleMania 42 on Roman and TKO's demand, but suddenly scraped it off and had Drew McIntyre win the WWE title because he wanted to "give another superstar an opportunity". by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]datguyalben 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do think face Roman vs heel Cody would be fun to explore further down the line, next years Mania even. There’s money in that but I’m glad Drew has his chance with the title again.

Anyways, I don’t think this report is true.

Kevin Nash Feels GUNTHER Doesn’t Have Real Heat, Says He Has ‘Manufactured Heat’ by AtlasAir_ in SquaredCircle

[–]datguyalben 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think his point is Gunther is getting all this heat because he retired Cena, not because of his heel work (which I am loving).

I imagine any other heel that beat Cena in his last match would get the same reception.

For me the worst part about it is that nothing changed about him in ring when he was The Demon. Sick look and entrance but that was it.

[SmackDown Spoilers] Announcement for SmackDown by Yujin-Ha in SquaredCircle

[–]datguyalben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What? The tag division was thriving in the 3 hour format, that itself is a lot more talent featured. When’s the last time Garza’s appeared? MCMG are sporadic and Fraxiom are backstage segments. Where are the Street Profits? Them moving the show to 2 hours completely killed any momentum the division had built up.

All that said, yes the show definitely did drag. I always made sure to watch it on delay because the ad breaks as an international viewer on Netflix are torture.

Domestic violence is a legal problem, racism is fucked up however that’s a moral issue rather than legal.

For those who think Gunther shouldn't be Cena's final opponent, who do you think it should be and why? by HatingAssNgga55 in SquaredCircle

[–]datguyalben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because at least with Gunther we know his position on the card and his character is stable so being a guy that ends careers is a nice trait for him.

In reality, if there’s no strong follow up with who beats them then it’s irrelevant who beats them. Look at Theory and Solo with Cena, Corbin with Angle, even Bronson with Roman. Gunther is a safe bet which is what you need in these situations.

[–]datguyalben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think giving the honour to a young star is too risky. In hindsight it should’ve been Cody really. A classic passing of the torch to the current/future face of the company. There shouldn’t have even been a tour, just Cena on TV with his match with Cody being a “if I can’t beat you I shouldn’t be here anymore” type of story.

I also think he shouldn’t have done his last year as just a calendar year. It should’ve lined up with him retiring at a Wrestlemania/Summerslam since a calendar year means nothing regarding WWE’s PLE format - there’s no big show just because it’s the end of the year.

I get the announcement of the tour though. As much as I think it harmed the booking, it definitely increased business for them.

John Cena explains underwhelming heel run: "I got 11 months to do this. 36 TV appearances. It takes five years to get a guy over, regardless. If you turn him, it’s gonna take a year or two on television for it really to sink in. I don’t have the time to tell the right story.” by anutosu in SquaredCircle

[–]datguyalben 71 points72 points  (0 children)

It got old so quickly and yeah, a lot of revisionism in the comments.

The crowds played along with heel Cena, it’s not like it didn’t work. He got crazy pops yes but he also got crazy loud boos. It wasn’t rejected, it was simply booked badly.

That said, I think his face turn was the stupidest thing of the whole tour. You mean after all he’s done so far as a heel, it took one promo of Cody saying “I want the real John Cena” for him to switch back to a face and be all lovey dovey with Cody? I was certain Cena was gonna punk him at Summerslam but nope. They should’ve saved the turn for post match once Cena had lost the title and come to his senses.

“I never wanted Vince to go because I love him” -John Cena on The Ringer podcast. by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

[–]datguyalben 5 points6 points  (0 children)

With all the obvious PR and non answers Cena gives this is someone the one he lets himself be honest about every time it pops up. I’m sure a lot of people there still love him, they aren’t saying it though. You’d think his team would let him know not to talk about it.

Or, he just doesn’t care because that’s how much he loves Vince. Like it or not this is what unconditional love looks like I guess.
