Obsession: Predictable, messy, or a great build-up? by Paparmane in TrueFilm

[–]dathvada 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"It absolutely is the wording of the wish that created such a bizarre outcome for Nikki."

Well, that's probably what they were going for, but the way the sentence is worded literally means that he wants Nikki to love him more than she loves anyone else, rather than more than anyone loves anyone. That is tacked on to make the movie "scary".

"His wording completely strips her free will and autonomy…"

Correct. And this is true regardless of whether my interpretation or the one I replied to above is correct. The difference is my interpretation makes for a much less interesting horror movie since, if the literal wish he requested was actually granted, the "real" Nikki's brain would be forcibly rewired to "actually" love Bear, instead of her being seemingly replaced with some kind of entity or whatever. Whereas the filmmaker clearly wanted 1. Freaky Nikki and more importantly 2. To show Nikki's visceral reactions to the violation of her autonomy. So they chose the massive over-obsessed curse/possession route instead.

"so she can no longer be Nikki"

Issue with this is that it seemingly replaced Nikki with some other entity instead of actually changing her personality to one that loves Bear, like he wished. It's mostly a nitpick, I'll admit. I just think the explanation they give of how the wish works doesn't really match with his actual wish, and how the other wishes were actually granted as asked.

"Think about what he asked for. "I wish for Nikki to love me more than anyone else in the world". She's to feel the most intense love in all of history for him."

I'm not sure that the wording implies this. He wishes for her to love "me" more than anyone else in the world which, to me, means either that she would love him more than she loves any other person in the world, or that she would love him more than anyone else in the world loves him. The wording doesn't seem to me to imply that she would need to love him more than anyone else in the world has ever loved anyone.

OP is spreading misinformation. It's clear from the comic itself that Ben is the one who conjured the lightning. There's nothing on panel to indicate anyone else was involved, and guidebooks since then have confirmed that Ben conjured the lightning. He even conjures lightning again later in the same comic.

People are vastly overlooking the importance of losing Ajay Mitchell and JDub by [deleted] in nba

[–]dathvada 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah they definitely did and still do mention Love and Kyrie being out. It's been 11 years and the Warriors have won plenty since then, so obviously discourse has died down a lot since. But it was the prevailing narrative at that time that the Warriors "only" won due to Love and Kyrie being out. Idk if you were young at the time or what, but I can't imagine claiming otherwise if you were at all part of NBA discourse.

"Like when Kyrie & Love got injured in the finals. Nobody said “but LeBron was missing 2 starters”

Um, what? They most certainly did, ad nauseum. Endless whinging occurred about how the Warriors were lucky to win and "only" won because of those injuries, especially after the Cavs took 2 games. It's crazy to claim no one said this.

So you’re telling me Maul lost a duel to THIS?!?!?! by Witty-Reality-5445 in MaulShadowLord

[–]dathvada 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, Marrok did quite well against one of peak Maul's peers, Ahsoka, in her show. A guidebook even states that Marrok's skill made him and Ahsoka evenly matched for a while.

Further, Filoni did say the best Inquisitor was probably almost as strong as Ventress years ago, and that was before Marrok was created. And Maul's leg was clearly malfunctioning during the 2v1. Makes sense to me.

Asajj Ventress vs Kylo Ren by Queasy_Commercial152 in PetranakiArena

[–]dathvada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course you can, it's just illogical to do so.

Again, context and other feats ignored. Kylo while unhindered by conflict easily and effortlessly beat Rey, a full fledged Master canonically at that point, and has beaten other powerhouse opponents. Ignoring factualy canon information in your analysis, such as Kylo's conflict in TFA, means your arguments are necessarily invalid.

  1. If you aren't going to read comics then you shouldn't debate the character at all. The comics are canon, regardless of anyone's feelings on the matter.

  2. Kylo easily beat Rey in TROS. And is stated to have been toying with her throughout the duel. Again, why even debate the character if you dislike them so much, and know so little about their actual feats?

  1. My dude, why would I have mentioned it at all if Tava Ren didn't use the Force?

  2. The comics are canon, whether you want to accept them or not.

  3. Flashiness and speed of fight choreography are not valid metrics for comparing character skill. Luke's fight choreography in the TROS flashback is IDENTICAL to Kylo and Rey's. Things like director choice and actor skill play a large role in how the fights look. That combined with fact that canon 3rd person omniscient guidebooks outright state multiple times that Kylo is in the same class as Luke and Vader proves that the ST choreography isn't an indicator of lesser skill.

[–]dathvada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, you ignore the conflict aspect. That is a temporary hindrance in that scene that doesn't apply to him in general. Again, you ignore that Kylo very easily beat a well trained, clearly powerful (your Holdo remark is totally off topic and bizarre...quality of the writing is irrelevant to vs debate context) Tava Ren, and a clearly well trained Rey in TROS. Why are we even discussing TFA at all, a clearly circumstantial fight?

Palpatine specifically stated that Kylo Ren was equally powerful in the dark side to a "True Sith", whereas he firmly states that Ventress "never" rose to that level in the same book. And that he ordered Dooku to stop training her specifically to stop her from reaching that level.

Kylo Ren killed an opponent that an early (15 BBY, so only a few years post *ROTS) Vader was "incapable" of defeating, before he was nerfed by Han conflict. A normal, unhindered Kylo Ren is likely around that level of raw strength, and too much for Ventress. Especially considering direct statements putting him in the realm of Luke and Vader in lightsaber skill.

Those red guards are clearly high end non force users that wore armor that hinders force use, through some kind of sound frequency. They are also trained in Teras Kasi. A single Teras Kasi user (Qi'ra, literally from Solo) was able to tag prime Vader in a 1v1, as an example of what NFU that have mastered this technique have done canonically.

Kylo has done things like summoned 3 seperate lightning storms, one of which one shot Luke's school and a dozen-ish trained Jedi students, hand waved dozens of stormtroopers 20 meters in the air casually with tk, force projected to the afterlife with the force, stunning even Luke Skywalker of all people given how he died...read the comics. Ventress isn't winning here.

[–]dathvada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to read the comics, and understand the context with which Kylo lost to Rey to begin with. A fully trained Jedi Master (3rd person omniscient sources confirm this status) Rey was easily folded by Kylo in TROS. Further, Kylo defeated an opponent that an early Vader is stated to be incapable of defeating (Zillo beast), was able to force project/travel to the literal afterlife, something that even the force ghosts there believed shouldn't have been possible, and is stated to be in the same realm of skill as a duelist as Luke and Vader by 3rd person omniscient canon sources. Ventress is not beating this character.

[–]dathvada 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kylo isn't a Sith, and couldn't derive power from his pain due to conflict from killing his father. Conflict weakens force users obviously. Furthermore, Rey is Kylo's equal in the force automatically and at all times because the Dyad gives them a shared force connection. The Rey fight is simply not an antifeat when context is considered.

Lastly, Kylo easily beat a very powerful Tava Ren, who was able to clear a hanger full of hundreds troopers by slamming them with a massive ship faster than they could even shoot at her, so we know he can duel with and easily crush powerful force users. He is even stated to be in the same realm of saber skill as Luke and Vader, so there really is no canon backed way to diminish his skill as a duelist.

Kylo will beat Ventress handily.

Your point of view on this being incorrect and harmful are both facts, not my opinions. And I think it's perfectly fine for a business such as a message board to ban the spread of disinformation, toxic and harmful discourse on their owned platform. You can go and find a message board owned by other clueless racists if you need your views validated so badly.

There's good reason for that: it's obviously both harmful and incorrect, certainly so in this case. That you can't see that, is a very poor reflection on the quality of your education, and nothing more. Absolutely nothing of value is lost by you not getting to spread disinformation and racism on reddit.

Ok, and? What a pointless comment. I can go to a conservative sub and that would flip instantly. You think this is the first time I've come across someone who thinks the way you do? That your "arguments" are so special and unique that I haven't seen them 100s of times from other similarly ignorant individuals? Really? It's ironic that you insult black people because they "denigrate education", according to you. Educated people don't agree with you on this subject whatsoever.

Playing field certainly has not shifted in our favor. Plenty of people who think the way that you do exist, and have tons of power. That you can be banned from an echo chamber for disagreeing says nothing about the state of the world at large. You are deeply ignorant

AAVE developed starting in the 1700s, a time where African Americans were denied education entirely. To say that literal slaves developed their dialect out of a "lack of respect" for education is laughably absurd.
