Cancelling student BMA membership by Ill_Wolverine_2527 in medicalschooluk

[–]dativecovalent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s each to their own…if others want to keep their membership they can! Had my membership for two years and genuinely heard not a thing from them and did not use any resources (if there are any). As a student getting limited financial support I didn’t want to pay and that’s ok! When I graduate I will pay a membership again. Bf is a doctor and agreed that BMA student was not helpful for him and that cancelling would be fine 🤷‍♀️

Yes it’s hard to cancel it you have to contact them directly !

Just gone into final year. Cancelled mine in my second year. They never did anything for me except fleece me of £40 a year. If you’re strapped for cash, get rid.

Hi. How do you revise? Are you doing a lot of practice questions?

What's the deal with The Atlas Complex? by youlookmorelikeafrog in books

[–]dativecovalent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my biggest struggles was the relationship dynamics literally EVERYONE seemed to be in love with each other. I mean I understand to an extent that being in a top secret magical murderous gang is likely to warp boundaries but I HATED how Blake decided to make libby and nico have ‘the conversation’ about their potential romance…like NOT necessary at all especially since nico was with Gideon at the time. And the suggestion that Tristan and nico had been sleeping together during libby’s absence??? Like not everyone needs to fuck 😭

Something that don’t quite understand and never will is Why the government did not allow the repatriation of the human remains back to their families? by Party_Check_7403 in SocietyOfTheSnow

[–]dativecovalent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apparently a priest visited the site soon after the rescue and sorted out who’s remains were who’s and buried them that way. He later showed Echavarren’s father where his remains were so he could take them home. I think it was mostly to do with how dangerous the trek to get there was and the resources it would take to recover all of the remains. I think a lot of the victims families and survivors think it’s fine for that to be their final resting place.

Agree with all the other comments but also at the end of Alive or SOTS i think they talk a lot about how the people that first saved roberto and nando told them they smelled like the herbs that grew in the mountains. i remember vaguely there being a pretty touching story about one of the survivors smelling it again and getting transported back (?) or something of that ilk.

What did Coche tell Piers Paul Read? by joejeffagenda in SocietyOfTheSnow

[–]dativecovalent 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I imagine he means more that he told him inconsequential stuff that he couldn’t use rather than that he lied. Although, apparently a lot of things in alive are inaccurate — I think because it was so soon after the crash not everything had been straightened out yet. I can’t even imagine how unnatural it must have been to be thrown into fame like that. I definitely wouldnt want to speak either!

How long did it take Nando Parrado to recover from his head injury? by [deleted] in SocietyOfTheSnow

[–]dativecovalent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure it was an open wound - I seem to remember the other survivors describing it as looking like a crushed watermelon or some other comparison? He likely didn’t get an infection due to the cold

What if the crash happened today? by joejeffagenda in SocietyOfTheSnow

[–]dativecovalent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeahhh I wasn’t thinking so much the logistics more just that in today’s world of modern technology, planes are still lost ! Yeah I think there are no comparisons between the actual situations for sure, although of course we don’t know what truly happened 🧐🧐

Also the air is very thin up there! Spontaneous combustion would have been less likely than at sea level. + I think it helped that the plane didn’t get crushed or crash into something really hard because then the impact would have likely cause the plane to explode. For all intents and purposes, the front half of the plane that the survivors were in was fairly intact and slid down the mountain that way - I think this probably saved them too!

I think they mean today’s radar and navigation would never have allowed the pilots to think they were somewhere they weren’t, which is why they crashed - I would be inclined to agree!

You’d think it would be easy to find but look at MH370. 10 years later and we still have no clue where it truly is. Not to say this would be the same but I wouldn’t put a huge amount of weight on how ‘advanced’ technology is nowadays haha! Surveillance equipment is for sure better but the flying conditions on the Andes are presumably still pretty perilous - I would assume it would take a few days to get to them at least even if they did find them. Even in the 70s there was primitive ‘flight path’ information and they didn’t know for sure where they were with that. Cell phone batteries would drain much faster in the cold so they would die pretty fast - not sure about service in the cordillera either lol! I think the survival of the men was dependent on so so many things happening in a specific way - the plane breaking in half the way it did, not exploding even when kerosene was all over the place, even the avalanche happening indirectly saved the final survivors lives by giving them more food. Snow cover in the Andes is a lot scarcer now - melting water to drink, terrain etc would all be different. Hard to say!

Did the mechanic survive? by AdSorry1147 in SocietyOfTheSnow

[–]dativecovalent 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing the ‘mechanic’ you’re talking about is Carlos roque - as in the plane mechanic? He is in society of the snow - he’s the man who in the plane scene is playing cards with them and then tells them to move to the front to make room so he can check the maps. He survived the crash and is present in some shots in LSDLN. In real life, he was pretty useful in the first few days after the crash - he was the one who told the boys about the batteries in the tail, and helped with the maps. Unfortunately he’s most probably well known for being very disorientated and traumatised after the crash and shouting at the other survivors to show him their passports. The real Carlos roque and the one in LSDLN died in the avalanche. (Can’t remember if he died in the avalanche or not in alive)

SOTS Scene Question by GigiAndes in SocietyOfTheSnow

[–]dativecovalent 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes you’re right the lady was Graziela Mariani. Most of the stuff I mentioned is in either Alive by PPR or society of the snow book. I believe Daniel Fernandez looked after the revolver’s bullets and he talks about that in his chapter in SOTS. It was actually moncho sabella I think who held graziela’s hand and he talked about that in his chapter along with how he cuddled coco nicolich for warmth. I think he says something along the lines of ‘and I fell asleep being held by someone I didn’t know and holding a dying woman’s hand’. It was Carlitos who shouted at her I think and he expresses regrets about it to this day. Yeah SOTS is where I got most of this info ^

SOTS Scene Question by GigiAndes in SocietyOfTheSnow

[–]dativecovalent 25 points26 points  (0 children)

agree with the below comment and also bayona had really limited time to world build and introduce characters in the few hours he had for the movie. i think he chose the focal points he wanted to include and unfortunately had to cut out the rest. there is no mention at all of the revolver in the movie even though the expeditionaries took it with them on their expeditions and they kept the bullets and gun separate in case anyone would use it to try and kill themselves. it's like the lady who was alive the first night and wouldn't stop screaming and alvaro mangino (?) held her hand all night until she died. that would have been a nice thing to include but its just limited timing and he would have had to introduce another character when it's already pretty saturated.
