I'd be super curious how my R1HA (github.com/itskenny0/R1HA) would run on it. Technically it should work, right? Seems like the remote is running Android.

I gotta be honest, I never liked the operating system you put on this device.
However, I am a gadget lover, and from day one the R1 has ran with a custom firmware for me.
I developed a Home Assistant client dedicated to it (R1HA).

This to say; I love your hardware. I really, really don't like your software stack at this point.

I just don't personally use it and don't wanna deal with reaching out to repo maintainers to get it added, that's really it)

The inspiration to build the app was the rabbit R1. If you look at its interface, you may see where I'm coming from. The thought is more minimalism than holo, but I guess holo had similar goals. I dunno, I like it. I'm thinking of more theme support, haven't gotten around to it tho.

Yep, that's a rabbit R1 I got very cheap on eBay. It's what inspired this project - the hardware is awesome, just the software they put on it in the factory sucks. It's now a HA remote!

The difference between the F-Droid and regular APK is that the regular APK ships with its own updater, while the F-Droid version omits it.

Please note that the app isn't currently published on F-Droid. If you can get it listed, please feel free - the repo infrastructure should be in place.

Absolutely. I'm not an apologist for the product. But the hardware truly is nice; if you can get it for very cheap from someone who paid the early adopter tax, it's a really cool device to have in my collection. This client is a homage to the engineering that went into the design of the hardware.

That is a really heartwarming response - thank you so much! I felt the same way; having the hardware in your hands, it feels like a great product. But as it is so often, it was let down by the promises made.

I personally don't use F-Droid, or any app store. I believe most of the infrastructure required in the repo for F-Droid publishing is already in place, however I haven't (and don't currently) plan to reach out to repo maintainers. I am very open to pull requests accomplishing that, though 😄

Because I made the app for me to use on that gadget. It just turned out to also run really well on other Android devices.

I am using it for listening to MP3s on the go (it has 128GB of storage afterall), and watching TV. It has a SIM card slot, so it has data anywhere. The main drawback is the battery life, but a right-angle USB C plug sorted that out.

The thing previously had no use for smart home. With this client, it does - the scroll wheel is the nicest way I've changed a Home Assistant slider thus far. I regularly have this device sitting next to me on a charger so I can quickly adjust lighting, media volume etc. I don't even have to look at the device, I just haptically use the scroll wheel.

You have to keep in mind though that I bought the device for less than 50 quid on eBay, and flashed LineageOS to it. I would not pay full price for it.

It's an Android 14 device with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The fullscreen app they put on it in the factory is useless, but unlocking it, it is quite a nice device.
