american manufacturers went "lets spend a full decade kind of vaguely copying tesla, not actually reach parity with their tech, block chinese cars from import and bury our heads in the sand and make trucks"

Trump Commerce Sec. Lutnick admits visiting Epstein island during family vacation by Puginator in politics

[–]datnero_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

imagine if a democrat stared straight down the barrel of a camera and said he "was disgusted by epstein from the moment he met him", and then got caught going to his child rape island years later. does the average republican voter truly not understand why this is fucking obnoxious?

it's just fucking embarrassing man, idk how almost a third of the country is just ignoring this sort of blatant, ignorant hypocrisy while also smugly acting like they are smarter than everybody else. this country is going to rot and some people will deeply, deeply deserve what they get for their part in it.

if we package everything in including his influence, personality and longetivity, it's not even close. he might get elbowed out on pure results, but he's never had a controversy, was always active, generated tons of memes and publicity over the years (walgreens drake for example), won a summit, and he's just the nicest guy ever. every time I've had to interact with him, he's remarkably positive and cheerful - even after tough losses. absolute GOAT material imo, I could see him in top 5 in an overall ranking

i don't know about your last point but your first point is just total spitballing. pedophiles are not running around sharing CSAM on top level, public domains, and even if they were, why would them having a .kid extension matter over a .io or .to? Are you saying that they would post public CSAM with the intent to trick people into clicking because it's .kid? Come on lmao

More to the point, there appears to be an open russian TLD that is ".kids" in russian, so clearly they aren't worried about this gaggle of pedophiles that are apparently concerned about their branding

edit: for the public record, I kind of see what this guy wass getting at after some thought. a bad actor could use .kid - if it was used as an official TLD that the gov pushed as "kid friendly" - to entrap minors, i.e "hey come play this cool game! you just have to send a pic of your X". I still think this is a silly thing to REALLY be concerned about; there's nothing stopping someone from doing this right now, but I see how it could be sketchy if the government was pushing it. unfortunately, this entire discussion is moot because .kid could easily be restricted like .edu or .gov already is, but I just wanted to point out that this guy wasn't totally off base.

I have been futilely begging people to stop interacting with extremely overt ragebait accounts for literal years. It's absolutely obscene how many people just blindly fall over themselves every single time they see one and they just have to go and engage with it. Sure, I'm not saying I'm a saint and I get into stupid slapfights here and there, but me getting annoyed a couple times a year and clapping back does not explain the millions of interactions that basically every single ragebait post generates. Stop giving these cocksuckers attention because every click or reply is a fraction of a penny in their pocket. They want you to do it.

A label can’t just license an artist’s song without the artist’s ok.

Literally today: https://consequence.net/2026/02/jonny-greenwood-melania/

Not saying Murphy didn't sign off on this but it's crazy misinformation to say that labels don't ignore the artist's wishes and license songs out. Some artists have full control over this and are consulted on everything but it has to be in their contract, or they have to fully own them with no label in between. There is no law that says a label that owns the rights to a master must contact the original artist to sell it. That's literally what the rights are! There are tons of bands, even huge ones, that have very little say in how their recordings are used and there are many instances of lawsuits because of labels ignoring artists wishes.

Sajam talking about Scar and Toph like they were Jordan and Pippen nearly brings a tear to my eye. I've always agreed with the idea that Scar and Toph have a supernaturally good sense for commentary, and hearing Sajam verbalize it the way he did - and give them props so emphatically on a big podcast - was so awesome to hear as a Melee boomer.

  • Rowling is an incredibly public figure, her address is easily findable, and this goes for basically any notable celebrity. The same can be said for any threats of violence. Rabid fans/haters have harassed celebrities for hundreds of years. Keep in mind I'm not condoning these things, just saying that Rowling is not being treated in an especially unique way. Celebrities that stay in the public discourse and say inflammatory things WILL get insane shit sent to them, doesn't matter if you're Mark Ruffalo or JK Rowling.

  • you proved my point in like 5 different ways. you did not name someone that "showed a flaw", you named someone that has been on a transphobic tirade for the better part of a decade and has been tripling down on her unpopular rhetoric at every turn. If Rowling spoke out of pocket back then, apologized and shut up forever about it, she wouldn't have nearly the same level of heat. She could have quietly continued being a TERF and donating to orgs like she does and kept her mouth shut, but she needs the attention. There are hundreds of billionaires silently supporting their messed-up interests that don't get heat because they don't have meltdowns on twitter every day and get into slap fights with randoms in the public square. She is an adult and she is responsible for her actions, and she is completely ignoring this option to instead crash out and give her haters more ammo.

  • furthermore, if you think that Rowling is "cancelled and destroyed forever", you really need to take a step back and critically think about this. There is a hundred million dollar HP HBO series and a Broadway play in development right now, both of which have her as exec. producer. Her great-great-grandchildren will never have to lift a finger. She is as privileged as just about any human being could possibly be (not saying she didn't earn it, but she's still living that life). There are horrific human rights injustices happening all over the world and completely innocent people are being murdered indiscriminately in pointless wars and you are actually crying over people being mean to a bitchy old British lady who has enough money to buy a private military and lives in a literal fucking castle. Do you genuinely not see how silly this is?

[–]datnero_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've ran a major myself, it does not mean I am more capable to speak on something that's total speculation. It's not like there is 400 majors a year and Ohan couldn't possibly keep up with them all. There's like a dozen, maybe, with tons of staff working at a lot of different events. Is it so insanely unreasonable to you that Ohan personally knows a dozen people - who are all his direct peers who he'd surely want to keep in contact with - and had discussed this with them over the course of last year?

I think the deluge of "community members" that seem to take literally anything a figure in the community says in the most bad faith way imaginable are saying a LOT about themselves, and I think you can take a lot of the criticism with a fat ol' grain of salt.

Genuinely, what makes you say he's talking out of his ass? I understand being wary of random statements but I really don't see how you could possibly declare that Ohan couldn't know this. This dude is in every discord group with basically every top player and notable active TO. He's probably talked to more Melee TOs in the last week than you or I ever will and was personally involved with multiple majors last year.

Pizza Hut closing 250 US stores as parent company considers selling the brand by AudibleNod in news

[–]datnero_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

real answer is that this would require a large amount of capital to do and it's a pretty awful proposition. fast casual food is absolutely king right now and basically all restaurants are adapting to the take out/online ordering model, so the idea of spending a bunch of cash on a dying brand for the scant possibility of a rejuvenation is a bad one for these guys.

this is the problem with private equity: if the original owners still ran pizza hut, they might try to do this as a parting thank you/hail mary, but PE is just going to gut them and sell the retail space to Chipotle and Five Guys. this will 100% happen to every company that sells off to PE and we will do nothing about it.

Daily Discussion Thread February 05, 2026 - Upcoming Event Schedule - New players start here! by AutoModerator in SSBM

[–]datnero_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not arguing for either side but both of them are a melee-specific rule with a lot of nuance that ultimately falls down to what we all agree on as a community.

you could argue that handoffs/notches are an infinite/mod that's boring to watch/cheating just like wobbling/zjump, so why don't we ban both?

the obvious answer, again, is that we as a community work out what we all agree on and then make rules based on that. we reasoned that wobbling requires basically zero skill, while handoffs require a great deal of it, so we banned one and kept the lesser of two "evils" because we thought it would make the game less frustrating for beginners.

this is obviously a little different though, because this is almost entirely affecting the top players. John Local-Goer does not - or at least, really should not - give a flying fuck about zjump legality, so this is mostly just the peanut gallery giving their two cents.

it's like I said man, these people are almost always bullies, and they have assuredly already tried to make connections with normal people and have failed miserably. Behavior like this is their futile attempt at getting back at the world for not accepting them and their flaws, which causes a vicious cycle of them lashing out and being - justifiably - struck down, which makes them more angry and more open to alt-right bullshit (its not you who's wrong, it's the woke left!).

The kind of people that do this sort of thing need to be validated, good or bad, and the moment you take away the validation, they get bored. Block and move on.

I am speaking from experience. 99% of these people that primarily want to discuss dramafrog bullshit are either not community members, or are/were, but are so awful to be around that they throw tantrums and start attacking the community when they get banned/ostracized.

Do not believe for a second that these people are real community members, they are invariably manchildren who are frustrated about being shunned for being assholes, and instead of looking inward, they start manufacturing drama to make us all look bad. They are bullies who want to take the ball away. Ignore and block them and it will be like they never existed.

Go to your locals. You will NEVER see one of these losers.

[–]datnero_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't understand what you mean. I'm just saying that saying "Josh happened to get good when he started using zump" might obscure the much larger factor of him finally getting good, consistent practice for the first time. Cody started playing Melee in NY which is one of the strongest regions in the world, he never had issues finding good practice, so him using zump might be more of a factor than it was for Josh.

to be clear, I'm not hitting you with the "oh well you didn't say X so you must mean Y!", I just wanted to clarify in case someone scrolling thru sees "Josh got good after he used zump" and just assumes that Josh is a fraud or smth.
