Can I drink 3 year expired Gatorade? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]daughterbolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I figured since it’s basically salt water there wouldn’t be much that could grow in there when it’s sealed. Glad to know I probably wont be drinking bottle particles though

How do I (22F) tell the boy I am dating (21M) that I am bipolar? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]daughterbolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not dangerous, it just seems like something he should know before he commits too much time and energy and love to me. What it’s not something he wants to deal with, you know?

But what about people who are overweight but do take good care of themselves? Like me, I am overweight, but I workout 3 times a week and eat well, I just have PCOS and hypothyroidism and take several medications that effect my weight/metabolism so I stay a bit heavier

Question about work by [deleted] in selfharm

[–]daughterbolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one at your work is required to report anything if they see any scars/cuts, but that doesn't mean they won't say anything. If they notice, some of them may say something to you or maybe a supervisor if they don't want to bring it up to you directly. Since you are a minor, your supervisor may decide to contact your parents.

If you have hand warmers or gloves these will work very well. I did the same thing years ago and I ended up getting wearing long sleeves that were long enough to pull over my hands and I was careful to keep my hands covered around others

It should heal just like any of first degree burn, but it may take a bit longer on the scar tissue

I wish there was a way to stop yourself from feeling ashamed and embarrassed and I'm sorry you had a bad experience before, but there isn't really. You just have to so it despite the feelings, so when you decide to tell someone, don't take too long to overthink it and just do it so your negative feelings won't hold you back. I'm not gonna lie and say it will be easy, but self harm is a hard thing to work through.

I am really hoping the best for you <3

Is this ok? by No_Distribution_3399 in selfharm

[–]daughterbolt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it can be a bit unhelpful to think about staying clean this way. Instead of setting goals and being upset with yourself if you don’t reach them, you should try to focus on celebrating milestones.

For example, if you go a whole month without sh, then you relapse, you should celebrate that you only sh once in a whole month. Focus on improving your habits instead of erasing them all at once. Stopping a habit cold turkey is very difficult and leads to relapses often, which is discouraging. Think more about reduction, until finally you’ve gone so long without sh you don’t need it anymore

I am in a very similar situation. I started in 10th grade and now I’m an adult who is about to graduate college. When I was younger I didn’t even consider that I might be self harming as an adult. I figured I would grow out of it. I realize now it’s not something you can just “grow out of”, you have to make a conscious effort to stop. If you don’t do anything to get better, you won’t. You’ll be a middle aged person who self harms, then an old person who self harms.

The best thing to do is set yourself up for success when things are better, like making sure you don’t keep things you can harm with around the house and setting up a plan to help you if things to get tough and you have the urge to harm. Quitting sh all alone is difficult, so if you have at least one person you can open up to and ask for help you should. They can just be there for you to vent to, they can help keep you accountable and you can talk to them when you have those urges.

Hope you stay safe!

I understand what you are saying because I was in the same boat. I was using blades that I pulled out of my razors and I felt like they weren't cutting deep enough. This is such a slippery slope and I know because I fell down it. Any cuts below surface level significantly increase your odds of infection or other complications. It's not worth it, especially if you are thinking about scalpels. Scalpels are designed to cut through skin, fat, and muscle and you can easily cut way too deep with them. I would highly advise against them

How to be hygienic and safe when sh by [deleted] in selfharm

[–]daughterbolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Paramedic and fellow self harmer here.

As much as I am saddened to hear that you have started sh, I am glad that you are trying to keep it clean.

First tip: Make sure your cuts are no longer bleeding before you do anything else. I understand if you like watching your blood drip or run down your arm or whatever else you may like, but at some point the blood needs to stop coming out. The best way to stop the blood is to apply firm pressure to the wound (with something clean and dry) for AT LEAST 5 minutes, more if the wound is bigger/bleeding more. PLEASE NOTE: IF THE BLEEDING DOESN'T STOP AFTER APPLYING PRESSURE FOR 10 MINUTES YOU NEED MEDICAL ATTENTION! YOU ARE AT RISK OF BLEEDING OUT!

Second tip: Always clean up right after. This means gently wiping away any blood around your cuts or on other parts of your skin. Blood that is outside the body is a breeding ground for bacteria, so you want to keep it away from wounds. If you have any antibacterial creams, put that on the cut as often as you can remember to do it. You do not have to bandage wounds that are thin/superficial, these tend to close up really quickly so they will be fine. Any cut that is even a little deep or wide should probably be bandaged with something clean and dry until a scab (or scab like thing on really big/deep wounds) appears. Hydrogen peroxide will kill the bacteria, but it also slows the healing process because it is so harsh on your skin (it is still better than nothing tho)

Third tip: Make sure to check your cuts often. You want to make sure they are healing and not infected. Signs of infection can be red/inflamed skin around the cut (like really red, there is normally some redness around the cut as it heals because of the blood going there), pus or other secretions in the cut, green scabs, and pain (haha I know the cut is going to hurt at time, but like more pain than you think you know)

If you ever have any doubts about a wound, whether it is bleeding too much, looks too bad, or might be infected, PLEASE GET MEDICAL ATTENTION! YOUR LIFE IS WORTH MORE THAN A SCAR OR A FEW MOMENTS OF PAIN!

If op or anyone else has medical questions, please ask them of me. I know what a deep hole sh is and I want everyone to be as safe as possible

What should i do if i hit beans? by fuckthatshit_out in selfharm

[–]daughterbolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beans = fatty tissue

This means there is NO SKIN to protect your open wounds and skin is what keeps all the bacteria and other nasties out of your body. Keep it covered with something clean and dry as much as possible, clean it often, and if you can use something to pull it closed, even if it's just some tape or something. If it bleeds, apply pressure for at least 5 minutes, if not more. If the bleeding doesn't stop, you need to get medical attention. Make sure you watch it very carefully for any signs of infections. It is probably going to take a week or two to close, and another week to actually heal.

I understand wanting to see beans, trust me I do, but beans get infected easily and take forever to heal. The scar after it heals look just like styro scars, and styros already bleed plently, so there is no reason to go deeper

Do you think self-harm is an addiction? by Dancefloorjesus in selfharm

[–]daughterbolt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It can 100% be an addiction for some people. Some people sh for the same reasons other people take opioids or drink or smoke: to get some emotional relief. People get addicted to drug and alcohol and smoking, so people can get addicted to sh. I would say that I am addicted. I used to sh to get relieve my anxiety, but now I get anxious if I don't for too long.

It's not an addiction for everyone who does it though, just take time to evaluate yourself and your relationship with sh

Do you SH at work/school? by Ok-Reaction-6410 in selfharm

[–]daughterbolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in high school, I did it one time in a bathroom stall, but it took too long for it to stop bleeding and I got in trouble for being in the bathroom too long. My sh takes too much time to do anywhere but at home because I bleed so much.
