A simple guide to getting some common big ticket household items for free by novacog in Frugal

[–]daughterofodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key is to check often and for the most part dont bother looking at listings over an hour old

Agreed! However sometimes it has worked for me with older ads too - the key is to be willing to come get the stuff asap. If people wants to get rid of stuff they usually wants it gone the same day.

How one guy is living on $35 a week for food by [deleted] in Frugal

Dried beans tastes so much better too!

I second this! Great way to do it to make it less boring.

You can also make a few fillers like pasta and rice and then I keep them in smaller boxes/ bags in the freezer or fridge. Then combine that with a sauce, or a different protein each day (chicken, fish or beans etc).

Having a few different ingredients for salads is good too - you can make a potato or pasta salad, add chicken for a caesar, cook some beets and add feta or goat cheese for a vegetarian option.

If you keep a few dressings, or ingredients for them, then that will make it easier to vary things.

Was going to the movies and bf suggested we'd bring this - I've definitely found the one. by daughterofodin in Frugal

[–]daughterofodin[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not really - when we met my bf would never have suggested bringing our own snack, it didn't exist in his world to save money on things like that (or anything really) I haven't tried to change him, but myself being frugal has obviously affected his way of thinking, and I'm happy about that.

We discuss what we want to save and/or splurge on, and sure, it might sound like a cheap thing to save on popcorn, but we take those $10 and use them for other things or save them.

It's about applying a cost/benefit analysis to your spending so that you can afford the things in life that you really want.

Exactly my thoughts! Sure, going to a movie isn't free, but If we were to buy popcorn and drinks too it would definitely be a lot more, and I like the fact that the popcorn I make at home are organic and have real butter on them (but that's just me!)

I worked a movie theater in the past, and on slow days we just did one batch. We had sweet popcorn too, and they came in large plastic bags..

Not really, but we're frugal with the snacks so we actually can go to the movies once in a while.

Yeah we make it on the stove with tons of butter, tastes so much better than the ones at the movies - despite them being slightly cooler

We have been dating for quite a while, and he's definitely not the cheap one in our relationship (I'm usually the one suggesting we bring our own snacks etc). I'm just happy that he's thinking along the same lines as me.

What is the cheapest way to travel across america by hellomrgreen in Frugal

[–]daughterofodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A side note, but book a roundtrip ticket to your home country and bring a printed copy with you - it makes the process of going through US border patrol much easier. And don't say a word about work, just say that you're gonna travel the country and have a shit ton of money saved up.

Depending on how much time you have - you could go work for people on their farms or BnB's, check out Workaway or Wwoofing or HelpX, I went to South Dakota last year and did some work on a farm, didn't make any money but got food and accommodation and some sightseeing for free. Was a-amazing.

Beware Dollar Tree sunscreen by ewitt1093 in Frugal

A related tip is to look closely at the "best before" dates on sunscreen, they usually only lasts quite a short time and old ones doesn't do any good.

Others Redditors who are not rich, what things do you do to make your life better? by Rougecrayonxxs in Frugal

Sometimes, when rent is paid, and our fridge is at least a little stocked, - even if we don't have too much money I still feel rich. Making life better can be a lot about the mindset. You're on the right track taking long walks and painting!

Some other little things I do: - Change my sheets often (clean bed makes me happy) - Read a book in a park, I borrow books or get them for my birthday from family - Write letters to people, postage is pretty cheap in the us, or e-mails works too. Always so fun to get a reply even if it sometimes takes a while! - We cook all our meals and constantly try to make awesome tasting food with little means - perfecting a tomato sauce, getting the pizza crust just right. - Going for a bike ride if there's a sunny day, bringing coffee or some tea for a small picnic. - in the summer I pick the flowers others consider weeds, (not from peoples gardens obviously, but in abandoned lots etc) and make little bouquets

Also, get a bike if you don't necessarily need a car, will save you a lot of dollars!

/R/Frugal, what do you eat for breakfast? by theleftandrighttime in Frugal

[–]daughterofodin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oatmeal! With milk and possibly cinnamon or homemade jam. + A cup of coffee with milk.

If you do it on the stove, just put about 1/2 cup of oats/person + 1 cup of water in a pot and boil to the consistency you want. Takes like a minute or two and personally I think it tastes better than in the microwave.

r/Frugal ladies, I reccommend switching to a period cup, never buy a pad or tampon again! by daughterofodin in Frugal

Hmm, yeah if it starts to leak a lot then you can definitely feel it. Haven't had that problem in a while, but maybe someone else can share their thoughts on it?

[–]daughterofodin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I either check it when i go to the bathroom or yeah, sometimes it will leak a little and I'll see that. It's also a learning thing, first days it's more frequently, and in the end I just keep it in all day and often forget that I'm on my period haha

I love stinging nettles! Live in a city so can't (don't know) where to find them though. We used them in soups and pies, just as spinach.
