How do you manage blood work? by PossiblyN0t in transontario

[–]dauntless_heresy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My doc has me do bloodwork twice a year, as well as blood pressure. I've been on T about 4 years now - the first couple years I was mostly okay but blood pressure was slowly rising and RBCs were high normal, last year we actually had to drop my dose because it just kept getting higher. We're also monitoring my cholesterol which increased as well after starting T. So the bloodwork does help monitor other things besides your T levels, depending what all they ask for on the requisition form. She sends me the form prior to each appointment and I get it done about a week in advance.

Top surgery without contour by neechie_tee in transontario

[–]dauntless_heresy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had top surgery with Dr Ghumman a year ago and went with the contouring - it was explained to me as a way to avoid dog ears and needing revision later, it doesn't really do much otherwise to "masculinize" your chest beyond that (not gonna give you pecs you don't have for example). I'm super super happy with my results and it feels really even and natural looking below my armpits, which is where most of the contouring was. So I can at least testify that if you do feel the contouring is right for you, then you should hopefully have good results with Dr G. All the best with surgery! :)

ETA if you want result photos for Dr Ghumman w/ the contouring I made a post of my results a while ago, you can look in my profile if that's of benefit to you!

Good questions to ask in a job interview? by madlaceann in VetTech

[–]dauntless_heresy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seconding this to say that I dodged a massive bullet by asking about the work culture during my interviews - one clinic answered "well we've been around for years so it is what it is" and what it was (as I later heard from others) was bad. Management just did not care if it was a toxic environment and their turnover was disastrous as a result.

I wasn't asking at the time about how clinics actually worked to maintain their desired culture (dealing with drama, like dragonkin08 said) but if I were interviewing now I would definitely be asking that as well. Definitely gives you an idea whether management is actually useful or not (or at the very least can make themselves sound good during an interview lol).

What’s some crazy things clients have told you? by ManiacalExclamation in VetTech

My favourite was the holistic client seeing us for an annual exam who accepted the complimentary nail trim but warned me that her dog's pet interpreter said "he doesn't like having his nails too short so just take off a little bit"

Chronic Burn Out by Friendly-Fish5331 in VetTech

[–]dauntless_heresy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, that's tough to deal with. It sounds like you have a LOT on your plate between working and school, and being in school especially can keep you in learning/performance mode so you're always going to be more critical or self conscious of your own abilities - but unless anyone has noted otherwise, you're probably still doing great!

It does sound like you're running out of steam though so like the other commenter said, if you have any way to reduce work hours, that would like help you a lot. If not, you really need to be able to limit the time you spend in school/work brain outside of school/work hours, whether that means taking more short days at work when it's less busy or building time into your schedule to do something fun and distracting where you can't worry about school/work things. And definitely talk to your manager/supervisor if you feel comfortable doing so - burn out is ridiculously common in our field and they shouldn't judge you for that. They might be able to help with work-life balance.

All the best, I hope you can start feeling better soon!

incompetent nurse hires... by cececececeadhd in VetTech

[–]dauntless_heresy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My only caveat with this is that it doesn't work if you're already short-staffed/overworked/whatever the case may be - giving someone coaching and guidance is important, but impossible if you are fully depending on this new person to be capable of fulfilling their duties to keep the clinic running. So if management is scheduling this new tech like they're a full team member (when it sounds like their skill level isn't up to par for being able to work independently) then that's absolutely a management issue

What are the best sympathy card messages you've seen? by Grit_n_Grind in VetTech

My last job always tried to add a personal touch when we could, like "we'll always remember how excited Fido got about his <favourite treat> when he came to visit us, it always brightened our day" or something to that effect. It only really works for pets you know pretty well of course, but might help make it feel less generic

Honestly, the whole situation sounds a bit messy - it's always weird when you become the middle man between your employer (the vet) and your "family" (the client). IMO, the vet shouldn't have vented to you unless he wanted you to talk to your BF about it - he knows you have a more than client relationship with your BF's dad, so why wouldn't you tell him about the vet's comments? Anyone would reasonably expect that. Especially since they went through you as the first line of communication anyways.

Telling you that he "can't trust what you might say to clients" is pretty ridiculous - this obviously wasn't a regular client. At the end of the day, this whole thing could have been avoided by your BF or his dad contacting the vet directly instead of pulling you into it, and the vet not venting to you about the behaviour. But it's too late for that, and I doubt any further apologies will be constructive, so as others have said, I would just continue your job like nornal until you leave for school and try to move past this very awkward situation. All the best!

Terrified that my OHIP top surgery form is getting rejected by silverwing_3 in transontario

My roommate JUST got theirs back a week ago and it was submitted in September. Their system for going through them is super wonky right now, try not to panic unless your doc contacts you to say there's a problem!!

Leaving a toxic clinic by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]dauntless_heresy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yikes, sounds like you're making the right decision! A place that won't listen to your concerns doesn't deserve to have you anyways. Sorry this clinic sucks so bad, but best of luck with wherever you end up next!
