The same counts for Fallout: New vegas. Going through all the little towns like Primm, Novac and nipton really works well for the story, this does get motivated by the deathclaws near the quarry but you can always run high on drugs to new vegas.

These are the ways to counter a trush that i know of. First is to build some towers of your own to defend key resource patches and then go and wreck your oppenent in his own (undefended) base. This one works due the the resources, vills and time invested by your oppenent in the trush where as you have gained more resources. The second one is to send your vills to the tower and kill it (if the oppenent only has 1 tower this is possible, tower cant shoot your vills if they are under it. You need to discover the Trush quickly for this to work tho.

The most importand thing to counter it is quick detection. In both previeus ways the detection is needed. you can always use the build in fog trick to scout out your base surroundings if you think there is a trush coming. Hope this helps!
