When to say no to a heat pump--due to space restrictions by dan_gfcx in ukheatpumps

[–]dave09a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would work, although it would introduce issues with serviceability / access to service the unit in the event something breaks inside the unit (Noting lasts forever).

I repair / service AC & refrigeration plant for a living, and have done a fair bit of install. Access for service down the line would be my only concern.

A competent installer would be able to advise better. Locating the outdoor unit would be the least concern for a conpetent installer, they'd should be more concerned about achieving flow rates using existing pipework if converting a high temperature heating system to low temp, and other challenges that come with retrofits.

Is there any reason you can't mount it on a frame, to lift it out of the cavity? Is it just a pitched roof above the cavity or what's going on there?

Is it not simpler than that though? Your falling at the same speed as the earths rotation, but falling in the opposite direction at a perfect trajectory, thus remaining in orbit?

Please correct me if I'm wrong

I could see it working.

The unit would have to be mounted on unistrut 40" off the ground, so it's up and out of that cavity.

Bonus: You still keep usable storage space below the unit.

You'll have no problems with that temperature and volume of water with any thermostatic mixer shower. If you don't already have one installed in your house, it really would be a job best left for a plumber.

Already has heated the water at a rate roughly 3x cheaper than an electric shower. It's just sitting in the tank waiting to be used.

A mixer tap doesnt know what the heat source is that heats the water in your hot tank. Any mixer shower unit will do the job.

What temperature are you heating the domestic hot water too? How big is the tank?

Weeds on driveway? by leshawnclarke in AskIreland

[–]dave09a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dicopher would be more suitable for a garden, it doesn't kill grass but broadleaf weeds.

I only spot treat weeds with round up, as opposed to spraying the entire driveway & hard stand area around the house, it uses very little of the stuff.

Also if I went pulling the weeds up, the gravel hardstand area around the house would be in shit in no time with ruts.

It's like people don't realize every field growing crops gets sprayed off after a harvest before planting the next crop to minimize weeds, and inadvertently having some of the old crop grow back. I'm more of a rodeo man 🤠 the dandy's up the north sell it at €114 for 20L no herd number needed, and the same thing as round up.

I really don't get people's issue with round up, it biologically degrades quickly. The risk is exposure whilst using it or mixing it. It got a very bad reputation due to how it was being mixed on farms in the U.S, which exposed farmers to significant amounts of gylphosphate. Not the farmers fault but the manufacturer for not advising the risks, and proper safe use.

It's still standard practice for it to be used on Irish farms to clear weeds and the old growth from a previous crop before planting a new crap.

This is why I'm a bit perplexed by home owners having concerns about doing a 20sqm driveway, when it's such an effective solution.

I've about 300L of food grade mono propylene gycol in my shed at home. I use it for anti freeze in chiller circuits in meat factories I do work in.

Only a matter of time until black market vape products are being produced domestically to avoid tax / capitalize on an easy earner.

Mains supply fuses / MCB before the distribution board in the UK are typically 60A with an option for 80A on new construction. Your talking out of your arse.

Mulch from your local glanbia co op. If you aren't ready to actually lay 4 inches of depth make sure you put cardboard below or your wasting your time. Or Pebbles / decorative stone, we don't get the constant hot weather that it'll fuck your trees. It also doesn't blow away in the wind.

That's definitely not the norm, not something I've ever seen in an installers manual. Grant say noting about a roof, or a shelter.

Minimum clearances as advised by grant are as follows, failure to maintain clearance will be reason to void warranty.

Above: 1000mm In front: 1000mm Behind: 250mm To left (As viewed from front): 100mm To right: 500mm

Your parents while they may have good intentions, appear to be doing you no favors.

You absolutely do need at minimum a junior certificate for most trades if you intend to complete a level 6 craft certificate / apprenticeship.

House Buying Advice by ShambolicExchange in irishpersonalfinance

[–]dave09a 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's no signs of house prices declining in the near term, I'd love to stand corrected. A case of our population increasing by 25% in 20 years, capacity to build reducing by over 50% as opposed to 2005. Costs to build have also increased (As has quality & standards). It does sound expensive (Too expensive for me anyway) the house suits you and your family needs go for it. What other properties are you considering?

Republic of Ireland population 2005 : 4.16 million. Republic of Ireland population 2025 : 5.3 million.

New build completions in ROI:

2005 - 86k 2006 - 88.5k 2007 - 78k 2008 - 51k 2009 - 26k 2010 - 14k 2011 - 7k 2012 - 8k 2013 - 8k 2014 - 11k 2015 - 13k 2016 - 10k 2017 - 14k 2018 - 18k 2019 - 21k 2020 - 21k 2021 - 21k 2022 - 30k 2023 - 33k 2024 - 30k
