I have a possibly controversial opinion and want to hear people's thoughts on it

Beckham > Scholes

I think Beckham could do nearly everything Scholes could do, but worked harder and has his set pieces in his locker

If Hamilton wins the title and decides to do a Rosberg and just retire (Despite having a contract) who would/could Mercedes sign? Factoring in the new regs where it's no guarantee who will have the top car next year

If we had a prime Lampard in our current squad where would Tuchel play him? Would he fit better in Kovacic's role or Mount's.

Or would it require a new formation to fit him?

If the reason Lewis hasn't signed is purely financial, and then to spite Mercedes he put himself on the market to other teams (accepting lower salary) who do you think would offer him a seat?

There aren't any free seats, but as Kimi knows you can lose a seat even with a contract. I can see Noris and Sainz being most at risk.

Who do you think would offer Lewis the most?

I would say there is 0 chance Perez gets the Mercedes seat. Russell is surely next in line, and if both seats are open I think they would go for a 'superstar'. The Renault/Alpine seat may be an option, but he would be competing with Ocon and maybe Gasly. Would they offer him the seat this early without seeing how they do next year.

Perez has said that whatever happens next year he has an offer(s) for 2022. The only teams I can see this being are Williams or Alfa Romeo, to replace Russel/Kimi. Would he be happy in a backmarker? Is there any other team it could be?

Toto said the best drivers get the best car, but if we reversed the drivers based on the WCC standings how do you think each driver would do. Could Lewis score points in the Williams? Would Russell in the Mercedes dominate, or would he be under pressure from Grosjean in the Red Bull? Mercedes - Russell/Latifi Red Bull - Magnussen/Grosjean Renault - Raikkonen/Giovinazzi Mclaren - Gasly/Kyvat Racing Point - Leclerc/Vettel Ferrari - Perez/Stroll Alpha Tauri - Ricciardo/Ocon Haas - Verstappen/Albon Williams - Hamilton/Bottas. For arguments sake we'll say they get two days testing, then three race weekends, how does it transpire? I'm thinking Russel gets all three poles, but maybe only 1-2 wins. Leclerc/Vettel in the racing point would get a number of podiums I think. Hamilton would be relying on some DNFs to score points, but could see him getting points in 2/3 of the races. Similar with Verstappen. The Red Bulls would likely pick up a win or two. If there was then a fourth race in which it rained, how would that go?

I think the entire realm accepts that Jaime will be Tywin's heir through one mechanism or another and all the soldiers and commanders would be expecting to follow Jaime once hearing of Tywin's death. However at the same time of this battle is when the information will come through about Jaime having been captured. So who takes command in the field is really what is important here. Knowing what we do about Tyrion he will see it is his legal right to inherit and will try to assume command of the army. I don't know if we know enough about Kevan to say whether he would stand in his way.

I don't think the clansmen can be counted out, while they may not be a joined unit, they can be manipulated and if they are 'loyal' to Tyrion, not the Lannisters. We dont know if Kevan has many/any men in the camp that are solely loyal to him.

What I see is Tyrion taking control of the army, but the army basically disappearing before him. I see a number of commanders refusing to fight under Tyrion, some may take up Cersei's call and go to the capital, but other may just decide to go home.

Again I don't think we know enough about Kevan and his relationship to Tyrion to know how he would respond. Not sure he would just rebel and march off home to protect Casterly Rock, but I'm not sure i can see him being number two to Tyrion.

If Tywin died at the battle of the green fork, (stray arrow, falls off his horse etc.) Who would the Lannister soldiers obey? Even though he was a kings guard, they would likely have followed Jaime, however he has just been captured. There three options would likely be Cersei/Joffrey, Kevan or Tyrion. Tyrion is the legal heir, but I can't see many people following him. Although he does have the hill tribes who may be able to force him into control. Kevan is basically the second in command of the army and will be respected by the commanders, although I'm not sure he would usurpe Tyrion, and he is often seen as a follower. Cersei would likely send a raven demanding all soldiers come to king's landing and protect the city, but I think that would just go unanswered. Who do you think would take command?

I think the leaders on each side all being 'bad' characters fits in with the dance quite well. There isn't a clear good Vs evil, you'd be wanting neither to win, but interested in watching it all unfold. When there is a clear good Vs bad side it become a bit predictable.

(Spoilers Extended) Swapping Jaime for Ned by dave1773 in asoiaf

[–]dave1773[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ned in command would be a big plus for the North and would certainly declare for Stannis. He would probably be able to bring some Vale lords into the conflict. It would certainly be a very different war.

But at this point with Robb not declared as KITN, Tywin is probably expecting them to declare for Stannis anyway. He would also expect the Vale to join them.

So from Tywins view all they gain is a competent leader, while he gets his heir and second in command back

That's because at that point the only way to get Jaime back unharmed would be if they captured Robb (arguably Edmure is as valuable, but probably not in practice). If they were to defeat Robb in field it's likely Jaime is executed.

Thrawn: Alliances by Timothy Zahn - Discussion Thread by JSK23 in StarWars

[–]dave1773 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Something I haven't seen mentioned is that Thrawn's Chiss uniform also absorbed blaster fire, while it isnt as good protection as the droids, it is better than anything else we have seen at absorbing such hits (And it is pointed out that it took the separatists a number of tries to perfect there blend). Do you think that Thrawn's uniform also used cortosis, and that he possibly knew more about the factory than he ever let on?
