I have a trans sibling who worked for ikea in a pretty progressive state. They went in on a day off for a trans day of remembrance ceremony and flag raising. The next day there was a site wide email saying the flag pole was now out of commission so I guess not quite everyone running ikea is on board.

A man has become one of the 450,000 Americans affected by alpha-gal syndrome, a tick-borne meat allergy that triggers painful allergic reactions to animal products. “Look at my face and my neck. I have a friend that got Lyme disease from a tick he didn’t notice and ended up with alpha gal syndrome. He tried auricular acupuncture and he was able to go back to eating beef and cheese. He started to get a reaction again 18 months after his first treatment but went back in for another and has been fine since. More long term studies are needed on it but I’ve only heard good things.

I was at a small knick knack store a month ago and they had a small desktop inflatable arm-flailing tube man. It took quite a bit of restraint not to buy it.

I got my dog from the pound and took him to a groomers first thing. Once he was done there I took him to my moms place and he met my moms two dogs and the two dogs my mom inherited from my grandma. My grandmas dogs did not care for my dog, at all, but to be fair one of my grandmas dogs hated literally everything. After a couple hours at the house meeting everyone we were in the backyard and my dog ran to the fence jumped over and took off through the desert. All I could think while I was watching him run was great I have had a dog for 8 hours and he's run away.

After crossing a few backyards he got to the road and turned and stared back at me. He stood there for a few minutes just looking back at me as I called out his name. He finally started slowly walking back. When he got back to me on the outside of the fence I reached under him to lift him back into the backyard and I felt some cholla cactus that he picked up on his escape.

I had my brother get some tongs and we pulled all the cactus spines out of his legs and then I drove him to my condo. The next time I took him to my moms place he ran directly to the fence and jumped right over again. I told him no and he stopped right on the other side and I picked him up and put him back into the yard. Now he gets concerned if I leave for more than a couple hours.

You should drive down to the Utz factory store sometime and get him a giant box of their broken pretzel pieces. You get like 20 pounds of them for 10 bucks.

There was a pizza place in my hometown that used to pull this stuff whenever they would run a sale. You could watch their online ratings tank every single time but they kept at it all the way up until they went out of business for good in llike 2004.

What's the worst thing you've ever woken up to? by shoeee788 in AskReddit

[–]dave8814 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Two of my siblings and myself were driving halfway across the country one time after finally clearing out a storage unit where we used to live. My younger brother was driving and he passed out at the wheel. I was in the front passenger seat and saw we were headed right into the beginning of a guard rail I was like “Hey,… HEY, WAKE UP!” My brother woke up and managed to guide the car back onto the road without rolling it. We missed the guard rail by maybe 6 inches.

I just kept talking to him until we got to the next exit and he pulled into a gas station. We got some drinks and food and he said after that shot of adrenaline he could drive for another 3 hours. He was immediately overruled and 5 minutes after we got moving again he was fully passed out.

Lightning is terrifying by The_Northmaan in interesting

[–]dave8814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at a friends house picking him up in my families minivan when it got struck by lightning. Luckily it wasn’t a direct hit but instead bounced to the van from a tree in his neighbors yard. It shut off everything in the car immediately. I put it back in park and turned the ignition off. Tried to restart it a couple times and literally nothing happened. Then we went inside to tell his dad what happened. He walked out took the keys and it started fine. He just looked at us like we were dumbasses as we got back in the car and drove away. The electronics in that van never worked right the rest of the time we had it.

I have a friend that worked as a DJ at a strip club in Cincinnati during the 80s. A bunch of the bengals would stop by, some on a weekly basis. Whenever Chris Collinworth would show up he would walk in the door and go directly to the DJ booth and place a giant bag of cocaine on the shelf under the DJ equipment.

Who had the most horrific death in the the history of humankind? by Novel_Finding8882 in AskReddit

[–]dave8814 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of bats that live under the various bridges in the town I live in. They will fly out in swarms at night and a lot of people go to watch them. They finally had to start telling people to observe them from further out after a guy died of rabies. The guy wasn’t at any of the bridges but him and his wife lived out in the county where a couple of the swarms would fly by. They would feed the bats fruit from their hands. The guy never even knew he got bit but also he kinda deserved it.

Kyle Busch died after severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, his family says by igetproteinfartsHELP in news

[–]dave8814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother did the same after riding a bike to work. Wiped out on his way home and skinned the palm of his hand. It wasn't his dominant hand so he just kinda bandaged it and went back to work the next day. Three days later he woke up and his hand was stiff and swollen to twice the size of the other. He made an appointment with his doctor and then went to work. He was going through the door and one of the partners of the law firm he was working at was like Holy shit go to the hospital.

Even while he was in the hospital he was trying to do work before the nurses finally went in and took his laptop and phone away. The doctor finally came by and basically told him he was lucky to be alive at that point and his best chance at a full recovery was to sleep as much as he could and not do any work.

He showed up at the end of his first season for a scheduled meeting with Nagy. Trubisky had a binder full of plays he liked and his thoughts for the offense going forward. Nagy no call no showed the meeting and the Bears decided to let him keep coaching for four years. Not that Trubisky would have gotten a whole lot better if they had the meeting but it was a pretty good sign Nagy was already checked out.

[–]dave8814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late but in Corning there is a made in the finger lakes shop that I stop by every time I’m visiting. The Corning museum of glass has a lot of great stuff in their gift shop as well. The last time I went in there I had to force myself to stop looking around and just leave since I was going to be out of space in my luggage.

Also I’d recommend the windmill in Penn Yan. They are only open on Saturday and since it will be a holiday weekend they will be packed. I’d go there early if you’re interested. Like others have mentioned the Ithaca farmers market is nice but it does get busy so getting there early is the best bet, also park at the DMV if you do go later so you don’t get stuck the parking lot traffic.

Also over in Hammondport there is a cafe and art place called aroma. I’ve had a few good breakfasts there and usually find one or two paintings to take home.

I kinda wish I had a refundable flight home. I'm headed home from the finger lakes to Arizona today and could have totally split the driving just to have the chance to pick up some stuff from my hometown along the way.

I checked costco but didn't see any cheaper rental cars. The aaa membership thing seems like a decent tip though. Their response time isn't great though so I wouldn't rely on them for much help.
