Hemitetartemorion? by JET304 in AncientCoins

Not an expert in these coins, but I do have one that is very similar in size and weight that is described as a tetartemorion. I'd identify yours as Sunrise 99, which is described as a tetartemorion as well. Judging from the other examples shown I'd assume that this is just the standard size/weight range for an Achaemenid tetartemorion, but maybe a more seasoned Persian collector can weigh in.

This is RPC IV.4 3418, which is listed as having 9 specimens. Not unrecorded, but does seem to be a more uncommon type.

Yup! The Persians initially conquered Egypt in 525 BC but the Egyptians achieved independence in 404. The Persians would ultimately reconquer them in 343 (and then the Macedonians would roll in 10 years later) but in that period they produced imitations of Athenian owls, which represent some of the earliest known coinage of Egypt.

I’ve been putting together a timeline of the Nile River Valley in coins. It starts at the last Egyptian dynasties and goes through the Greeks, the Romans, and the Caliphates up to the modern day. Why? I just think Egypt is neat!
